Installing the Switch<br />

Rack-Mounting <strong>Guide</strong>lines<br />

Warning<br />

This product requires short-circuit (overcurrent) protection, to be provided as part of the building<br />

installation. Install only in accordance with national and local wiring regulations. Statement 1045<br />

During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly<br />

touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself. Statement 94<br />

Note<br />

If you are installing a freestanding (not rack-mounted) <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6509-NEB, <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6513, or<br />

<strong>Catalyst</strong> 6513-E switch, you must install the stabilizer bracket kit, which is included as part of the<br />

accessory kit for these two switch chassis.<br />

Before starting the installation procedures in this chapter, see the “Site Preparation Checklist” section<br />

on page 2-24 to verify that all site planning activities were completed.<br />

Rack-Mounting <strong>Guide</strong>lines<br />

The <strong>Catalyst</strong> <strong>6500</strong> series switches are designed to be installed in both open and enclosed racks. Before<br />

rack-mounting the switch, ensure that the equipment rack complies with the following guidelines:<br />

• The width of the rack, measured between the two front-mounting strips or rails, must be<br />

17.75 inches (45.09 cm).<br />

• The depth of the rack, measured between the front- and rear-mounting strips, must be at least<br />

19.25 inches (48.9 cm).<br />

Note<br />

All of the <strong>Catalyst</strong> <strong>6500</strong> series switch chassis are designed to install in standard 19-inch racks.<br />

• The rack must have sufficient vertical clearance to insert the chassis. The chassis heights are as<br />

follows:<br />

– <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6503 switch—7 inches (17.8 cm) (4 RU)<br />

– <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6503-E switch—7 inches (17.8 cm) (4 RU)<br />

– <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6504-E switch—8.7 inches (22.1 cm) (5 RU)<br />

– <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6506 switch—20.1 inches (51.1 cm) (12 RU)<br />

– <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6506-E switch—20.1 inches (51.1 cm) (12 RU)<br />

– <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6509 switch—25.2 inches (64.0 cm) (15 RU)<br />

– <strong>Catalyst</strong> 6509-E switch—25.2 inches (64.0 cm) (15 RU)<br />
