A letter from the new
President of Delta College
Dear Friends:
Greetings to each of you! I am honored and
pleased to have been selected as Delta’s
fourth president, and I look forward to
serving this fine institution. I appreciate the
warm welcome and hospitality that Delta
College, the Board of Trustees, the
Foundation Board of Directors, the staff and
the community have given me. I come to
Delta with energy, enthusiasm, excitement,
and a deep genuine passion for serving in
the community college.
I was attracted to Delta because of
its reputation as a leading, innovative
community college dedicated to meeting
the diverse educational and personal
growth needs of students. Students are at
the core of what we are all about. Delta
College has demonstrated its vision of
serving students with excellence.
I believe in community colleges,
and have spent most of my career working
in them. I have taught in the classroom and
served in a variety of administrative
positions. Community colleges provide so
many outstanding opportunities to students
and members of the community, and
I intend to work to strengthen the
opportunities that Delta offers. We truly
make the “Delta Difference” in thousands of
lives each year.
There are challenges before us at
Delta as we take this College to new levels
of service and excellence, and I know we
can and will meet these challenges because
of the talent and dedication of our people.
Thank you for your continued support of
this fine institution, and I look forward to
meeting many of you in the near future.
Sincerely,
645 students to benefit from
“Possible Dream” fundraiser
Labadie to underwrite November 10 event
Mark your calendars: The Delta College
Foundation’s A “Possible Dream”
Fundraiser: A Chocolate Affair will be
held on Thursday, November 10 at the
HORIZONS Conference Center in
Saginaw. The special evening, again
underwritten by Bay City’s Labadie Auto
Company, raises dollars to benefit 645 Tri-
County sixth through twelfth graders who
are academically bright but socioeconomically
disadvantaged.
Creating this year’s chocolate
tortes is Michael Skarupinski, a renowned
chocolate artist and pastry chef instructor
at the Great Lakes Culinary Institute at
Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse
City. Skarupinski prepared tortes for this
event in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and will be
assisted this year by ten of his advanced
culinary students from Northwestern.
Since 2001, A “Possible Dream”
Fundraiser: A Chocolate Affair has netted
almost $400,000 for the Possible Dream
Program. The program keeps students
active in their studies, pursuing their
educational goals and reaching their full
potential.
This year’s Honorary Chairs are:
Two new endowments
to assist students
The Delta College Foundation Board of Directors has approved the
following endowments:
THE ROBERT KEICHER SCHOLARSHIP
ENDOWMENT has been established by the
family, friends and colleagues of Robert
Keicher, affectionately known as “Professor
Bob”, who taught mathematics (and later
added courses in computer science) at Delta
College from 1968 until his retirement in
2002. “Professor Bob” lost his battle with
Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2003, and found
the true meaning of his life when he
began working in 1991 on a partnership
between Delta and the Rift Valley
Institute of Science and Technology in
Kenya, devoting countless hours to
overseeing shipments of thousands of
used computers, books and other materials to
Kenyan schools. “Most of what I have done with my life was in
preparation for Kenya,” the educator, teacher, international colleague,
humanitarian and friend once said. “I was meant to do it.”
THE HAROLD AND NORINE RUPP SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
has been established by the longtime and well-known residents of Bay
County, who have consistently
and significantly financially
supported most projects
that helped the Bay
County community,
including Delta
College, the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Bay
County, United
Way of Bay
County, the Civic
Arena, the Ice
Rink, Elks Club,
Bay County
Women’s Center,
their church and many
more. Their philanthropic
spirit has also played a
crucial role in encouraging
others to join them in giving.
Student grateful for
opportunities and assistance
4
Mai Nhia Vue was four years old when she
moved to the United States. Her parents,
Hmong refugees who were born in Laos (in
southeastern Asia), relocated to Thailand
during the Vietnam War. They left their new
country because of political unrest and
danger, and were convinced that they
would have a better life in the USA for
themselves and their six children.
Now 19, Mai is a well-adjusted
Delta College student who remembers little
about her early years in Thailand. The 2003
graduate of Bay City Central High School is
one of nine children, ranging in age from 25
years to ten years (three have been born in
the USA since her family arrived here). She
has a pleasant smile and enthusiasm in her
voice, and is extremely grateful when she
speaks of the financial assistance she has
received to attend classes at Delta,
including the Michigan Merit Award,
federal grants and an award from
the Delta College Employee-
Sponsored Scholarship
Endowment.
Additional income she
earns at work – as a co-op
student at Delphi in Saginaw,
working 20 hours each week,
and formerly as a student
assistant in Delta’s
Employment Services
office – is crucial to her
family. Both parents
are unable to work
due to disabilities.
Six of the nine Vue
children are still at
home. (Two
siblings are in
Michigan – a
brother in Pontiac
and a sister in
Lansing. Another
sister resides in
Minnesota.) Mai’s
18-year-old sister
works at a local
restaurant and
helps the family as
well.
“It’s been
tough,” Mai said.
“Things have been very tight. However,
having scholarships and awards has
lessened the financial burden on me and my
family to continue my education, and has
helped me be able to study instead of
worrying about where the money will come
from.”
Mai is in her second year at Delta
College, pursuing her Associate’s Degree in
Administrative Assistant. Her long-range
plans include studying political science,
possibly at Oakland University in
Rochester, MI, with the hopes of someday
working for the government in public
administration.
Mary Keyser, Employment Advisor
in the Employment Services office at Delta,
was Mai’s supervisor when she worked on
campus. She indicated that the young
woman was “one of the brightest and most
exceptional student employees I’ve ever
had.”
“Mai exhibited a high work ethic,”
Mary explained. “She arrived at the office
on time, produced a high volume of quality
work, functioned as a team member, had
excellent computer skills, learned quickly
and was very adaptable. Whatever she
chooses to do in her life, I know she will go
far.”
Away from working and going to
school, Mai follows and plays sports,
especially basketball. She considers herself
a “typical college kid,” she said. “I work
hard and I achieve my goals.” And, she tries
to spend time at least once a week with her
boyfriend, who lives in Pontiac. She met
him at a Hmong New Year’s celebration
almost four years ago.
When asked what the “Delta
Difference” means to her, Mai smiled. “You
get so many opportunities for education
here,” she said, “for not such big bucks. It’s
the same education here that you would get
at four-year universities. And, the
instructors are great. They give each student
a lot of attention.”
And, she adds that she is grateful
for the opportunities she has living in the
USA. “You’re able to pursue something that
you really want here,” she explained.
“That’s very important to me.”

The weather was a classic Michigan day – a little bit of everything (cold, heat, rain), but
participants had fun despite the changing environment. The Delta College Foundation’s
annual Golf Classic, held Tuesday, June 21 at The Golf Club at Apple Mountain in
More than 500 attend
retirement barbecue
The Delta College Board of Trustees and the Delta College Foundation
Board of Directors hosted a retirement barbecue on June 10 at the
Carlyon Farmhouse. The event celebrated the legacy of Dr. Peter D.
Boyse upon his retirement as College President on July 31. Dr. Boyse
began working at Delta College in 1988 as Executive Vice President, and
assumed the presidency in 1993.
The retirement barbecue was attended by members of the
community, special friends of the College, members of the Boyse family,
friends and neighbors, colleagues, area legislators, employees and
retirees.
Food, beverages and music were provided, along with a video
and photo display reviewing Dr. Boyse’s tenure at the College. Guests
were also invited to videotape personal messages for Dr. Boyse and his
family.
The Boyse family posed in front of the Carylon Farmhouse during the retirement barbecue. Left to
right: grandson Wesley Grzemkowski, son-in-law Phil and daughter Heather Grzemkowski, Dr. Peter D.
Boyse and his wife Barbra, and daughter Cassie Boyse.
The Delta College Foundation is pleased to announce that the
College has been named as one of two beneficiaries of a $1.5 million
charitable trust from Maynard L. Smith, Jr., who passed away in
November 2004. Mr. Smith, a Bay City resident, was a longtime
friend of the College. Delta will be sharing proceeds from this trust
with Saginaw Valley State University. The purpose of the trust,
according to Mr. Smith’s will, is “to promote the education of
students”. If you are interested in leaving Delta College a planned
gift, please contact the Delta College Foundation at (989) 686-9224.
$2 million endowment
established
In honor of President Emeritus Dr. Peter D.
Boyse, Delta College announced the
establishment of a $2 million endowment
aimed at expanding and improving its
Strategic Initiative efforts. At this point,
more than $1.5 million has been raised.
The Peter D. Boyse President’s
Scholar Endowment was unveiled June 10
during a retirement barbecue for Dr.
Boyse. Dr. Thomas Lane of Midland, Chair
of the Delta College Board of Trustees, and
Eileen Starks of Midland, Chair of the Delta
College Foundation Board of Directors,
jointly announced the new fund. The
endowment pays tribute to Dr. Boyse, and
also will be supporting the College’s
President’s Scholar Program.
The President’s Scholar Program
will seek out promising new faculty who
are just at the beginning of their teaching
careers, with the intent of helping them
quickly grow their talents, while at the
same time asking them to bring new ideas
to diversify the college’s curricula and
programs, and to expand the effectiveness
of the college’s efforts toward access and
success of students from a broad cross
section of the communities that the College
serves.
The College welcomes
contributions to the endowment.
Quality Public Broadcasting
busy with various activities
Fund Development Committee
Delta College welcomed Dr. Jean Goodnow
as its new president in early July 2005. One
of her most important tasks is effective
involvement in the local community. In
anticipation of this critical need, the Delta
College Foundation established a new Fund
Development Committee to assist Dr.
Goodnow in meeting essential business and
community leaders. This initiative was a
result of a Corporation for Public
Broadcasting (CPB) project conducted with
Delta College Quality Public Broadcasting.
Committee members met for the first time
on August 31 and began providing their
suggestions. In addition to the typical
presentations at chambers of commerce and
service club meetings, a series of small
group gatherings in private homes is being
planned.
This important group also
functioned as ambassadors at Delta
College’s recent President’s Circle dinner,
held September 29. Committee members
were able to introduce many friends and
business colleagues to Dr. Goodnow, and
will also serve as advisors on a variety of
newly developing fund raising ideas, print
brochures and image pieces. Members of
the committee are: Stuart Bergstein, Bill
Bowen, Bob Hetzler, Kathy Langenburg,
Rob Monroe, Sue Pumford, Rita Smith, Bob
Stafford, Carol Thomas, Jim Van Tiflin,
Jenee Velasquez and W. Lynn Weimer.
their monthly, quarterly or annual meetings
at Delta College, please contact Karen
MacArthur at 989-686-9225 for further
details.
Hurricane Katrina Involvement
In response to Hurricane Katrina, Q-TV and
Q-90.1 joined in a number of statewide and
national response fundraising and
programming efforts. The FCC approved a
special waiver allowing public TV and
radio stations to fundraise for victims of the
hurricane. Over 150 Michigan broadcasters,
both commercial and public, agreed to
target September 9 as Michigan Cares,
Michigan Gives Fundraising Day, at the
request of Governor Jennifer Granholm. The
effort was intended to be a statewide radio
promotion with television tie-in spots as
well. Q-TV aired spots, and Q-90.1 devoted
time during Morning Edition to encourage
citizens to call in their financial support.
Q-TV also joined with nationwide PBS
