was our materials acquisition officer, and
all of us helped with patient/resident
morale. Since no specific physical
therapy services were requested. I informally
helped to educate residents in
need about mobility and safe transfer
issues - along with many a rousing game
of checkers with some of our geriatric
patients.
Our 'Family Activities and Recreation'
center truly became a central place for
patients/residents to come, and considering
we had two days to establish the
entire service we and our clients considered
it a success. In the end, Hurricane
Ivan missed Orlando. So thankfully the
shelter did not have to be fully utilized.
However, many officers were re-deployed
to other areas that were hit by Ivan and
continued what became a quick and
effective response by the Commissioned
Corps. When my two weeks were up, I
was given new orders to head home. I
arrived home at 3 am, the day after demobilizing.
I would like to extend a big thank you
to the administration of the Winslow
Indian Health Care Center for allowing
me to deploy. The people of Florida truly
appreciated the help we could provide.
