The Golden West College Foundation
The Golden West College Foundation was organized in 1985 to solicit and manage gifts to benefit the college and
its students. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the College’s mission of providing comprehensive academic
opportunities to the community for lifelong learning.
A board of directors, who provides the leadership and direction for the organization’s operation, manages the
Foundation. The Foundation has grown steadily since 1985 with assets over $4,600,000. This has been accomplished
through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The Foundation has provided over
$4,000,000 in scholarships to Golden West College students. In addition to cash assets, the Foundation annually
receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of dollars in non-monetary gifts.
The primary focus of the Foundation Board of Directors is to work towards building support for college-wide
needs. To nurture groups who have special interests in supporting Golden West College, the Foundation provides
staff support and direction to two auxiliaries. Each auxiliary is managed by its own board and officers, requiring
membership dues for operational expenses.

In May, the Golden West College Foundation awarded scholarships to over 200
students at the annual Scholarships and Awards Ceremony. Since 1986, the
Foundation has awarded over $4,000,000 to deserving students. This has been
extremely gratifying to the Foundation as the awarding of scholarships is a direct
contributor to our primary goal of student success at Golden West College.
On Saturday, March 13, 2010, the Foundation held its 13th annual Golden West
College Gala. We are extremely pleased to have raised $86,000. This performance
speaks volumes to the dedication and commitment of our Board Members and
supporters. The proceeds have benefited Golden West College students and college
programs. We particularly want to thank Elmore Toyota, Irvine Health Foundation,
and Union Bank of California as major sponsors, as well as all of the underwriters
who gave so generously to this event. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to
the Gala Committee and the community at large for continuing to support this very important event. We look forward to
continued success at our 14th Gala scheduled for March 19, 2011.
In June, the Foundation initiated a new fund raising activity with the inaugural Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament. Congratulations
to event chair Steve Olmsted for leading the Foundation to another successful event!
Our 19th annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated last October. Three Golden West College Alumni were
honored as “Alumni Pillar of Achievement” recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, 86 alumni have
been honored. We had three Pillars of Support (+$25,000), including The Irvine Health Foundation Pillar, The Mike and Lois
Miller Pillar, and The Southern California Edison Pillar. The donor wall was increased by 54 donor names, with eight in the
Golden Society ($10,000+) category.
As we look to 2011, we want to express our collective gratitude for the continued participation and leadership of the
Foundation Board members whose commitment and participation is critical to the overall success of the Foundation’s mission.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to the community at large, which continues to support the Foundation and the college
with its generosity and esprit de corps. Without this dedication, our work would not be possible. The Foundation’s objectives
for 2011 include increasing the Board’s role in fostering student success, expanding Board membership, and continuing a high
level of participation from our members. We are also looking towards successful Texas Hold ‘Em and Gala fundraising events,
while continuing to seek fresh ideas for new fund raising opportunities.
This year continued to be a challenge from an investment perspective, but our asset allocation methodology has rewarded us
with improvements in our overall financial position from 2009.
In closing, I would like to personally thank the Foundation Board of Directors and those who have provided advice, counsel,
professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during this past year. It is not often that I have had the
unique opportunity to work with such a dedicated group for such a worthy cause. I look forward to the upcoming year as we
focus on our goal of enhancing student success at Golden West College.

Closing out a decade and starting another provides us a chance to reflect a
bit more deeply than merely turning the page on another year. When I reflect
on the generosity of so many donors over these past 10 years, I am filled with
gratitude for what you have done for our students – directly and indirectly.
During the last ten years our college received some of the largest donations in
our history. So, of course, we gave away more scholarships than we have ever
given. Your giving helped students purchase textbooks, lab equipment and technology. Your donations helped
our college fund the restoration of some summer classes when the state was cutting back. Your efforts helped
some students transfer on time instead of waiting another year. You helped us put a diploma in their hands this
year, on time. How I wish you could have shared with me the smiles and hugs your gifts made possible.
As the headlines recap these past ten years, we are reminded of the many difficult challenges our young people
face. College is no longer a given; too many well-qualified students are being crowded out. Those that do make it
must balance difficult course work with the strain of multiple jobs, the weight of family troubles, transportation
hassles and a future that can seem quite bleak. The other day while reviewing a routine state report, a shocking
statistic jumped off the page at me – last year more than 7,747 GWC students were awarded state or federal aid
because they needed financial assistance. Community Colleges have always been an important doorway out of
poverty into employment and rehabilitation; however, this statistic underscores the level of our students’ needs,
even in this affluent community.
When I look through this annual report I am reminded once more that we are able to help these students succeed
because of your generosity and concern for their welfare. I want to thank you for being an important partner in
creating a more hopeful future. May this decade be one in which, together, we make the world a better place than
we found it. Happy new decade.

2010
4th of July Parade
Golden West College and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley were
partners again in the Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade. Riding in a horse
drawn wagon from Golden West College were: Susan Wall, Classified Employee
of the Year; David Salai, Associated Students President; Morgan Mymon, Homecoming Queen;
Sumair Devani, Homecoming King; and Greg Wight, Design Instructor & Faculty Member
of the Year. They were joined by outstanding club members from The Boys and Girls Clubs of
Huntington Valley, who help staff make a difference to kids at the Club through their commitment
to volunteerism and willingness to help.
Following the wagon in the college’s 1971 outreach vehicle, the “G-DUB”, were Wes Bryan, GWC
President, and Shirley Dettloff, Board President, Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley.
Following the G-DUB was “E/Motion,” a battery, solar-powered pedal vehicle designed and built
by students in the GWC Design Program. Driving E/Motion was Steven Sewell, GWC Design
student and past GWC Associated Student
President. Steven transferred to California
State University, Fullerton in fall 2010.

The Silent Auction offered a wide variety and was a huge success.

Opportunity Drawing
Thanks to the generosity of Elmore Toyota for the 6th year in a row, the Gala had a
high ticket opportunity drawing—a 2010 Pruis Hybrid. 750 tickets were available for the
Prius drawing at $100 each.
Mr. Larry Belinn was the winner of the 2010 Toyota Prius IV with Solar Roof. Larry is
a retired Golden West College accounting professor and was thrilled to get the phone
call from David McHowell, General Manager of Elmore Toyota. He was amazed that he
won, saying, “This doesn’t happen to me, the only thing I have ever won in my life is a
box of See’s Candies!”

(Student Textbook Access Reserve
Collection) Book Program. This
program, which began in the 2004-

academic departments.

The Golden West College Patrons
Organized in April 1973, the Golden West College Patrons is comprised of alumni,
community members and Golden West College staff and faculty. A volunteer organization
that raises funds for scholarships through their Chefs for Scholarships event each fall, the
members also volunteer hundreds of hours each year in support of other events such as
Commencement, Scholarships and Awards, and Gala.
Chefs For Scholarships
The Patrons held their 5th annual Chefs for Scholarships fundraising event on Sunday,
September 19, 2010. Held on campus at the GWC Student Center, donations for the event
were up 36% from last year and attendance was over 500.The big winners were GWC
students, as the event funds four major scholarships and an additional 12 scholarships to
incoming high school students.
For the second year, the Golden Chefs Award was given to a GWC alumnus. This award was
established to honor a former Golden West College student who is continuing their studies
at a 4-year college or university and has engaged in philanthropic efforts in support of
students at Golden West College.
Heather Walters, this year’s
recipient, was given a $500 check.
After graduating from Golden
West, Heather went on to earn
her Bachelor of Science degree
from the University of Southern
California and is currently in her
final year at Southwestern Law
School.
The Golden Chef Award was presented to Heather
Walters by June Dugmore, Patrons President and
last year’s recipient Ryan Chung.

Hens & Chickens
Quilt Auxiliary
The Hens & Chickens Quilt Fellowship of
Golden West College, an auxiliary of the
Foundation, began in 1989 when a group of
quilters did not want to disband after having
taken a quilting class at Golden West College.
Their name, Hens & Chickens, was taken from
the name of a quilt block. Originally a group
of 5, they have been 25 members strong and
range in age from 11 years to 80.
Each year, they make an opportunity quilt
and donate the funds to GWC scholarships as
well as contributions to the campus for such
projects as theater renovations, ballet bars for the dance department, new library books, a Fine
Arts Gallery security system, Science Museum supplies and recently a brick entryway for the GWC
California Native Plant Garden.
This year’s quilt was called “The Paisley Star Quilt”. It is a large quilt measuring 97” square. There
is one block in the quilt that is not like the others. When this happens, quilters call it the “humility
block” with the idea that only God can make something perfect. See if you can tell which block is
different.

GWC Alumni Association
Founded in 2009, the GWC Alumni Association is committed to
bringing together alumni from all walks of life. We are a rapidly
expanding organization and are proud to carry forward the
Golden West College legacy.
The upcoming year will be a very exciting time. We have a newly
formed Board of Directors full of bright, energetic, and passionate
alums eager to take the Association to the next level. We’re
dedicated to supporting and celebrating Alumni throughout their
endeavors. In an effort to reach more members, we’ve expanded
our online presence to include groups on Facebook and LinkedIn.
We’re also in the process of enhancing our benefits and services
and planning future events.

GWC Welcomes Veterans
Golden West College prepares for an estimated growth in its student veteran
population and opens a Veterans Resource Center (VRC) to welcome students to a
veteran-friendly campus.
For a returning veteran, the academic world poses considerable challenges, as most individuals
returning from military service have not attended traditional academic programs for several
years. In some instances, veterans who have served in the military have a hard time with the
transition from the “iron-clad” military lifestyle to that of a higher education academic culture.
A significant number of veterans can be described as “nontraditional learners” and some return
with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other disabilities
that pose substantial barriers to academic success.
Another roadblock is the age/experience disparity between veterans and students coming to
college right out of high school. Veterans who enter the college setting tend to be older and have
a life experience that is much different than their non-military counterparts. The veteran also
may have external demands that must be met — a spouse, children, a job.
To meet the needs of these deserving students, Golden West College established a Veterans
Resource Center to provide an on-campus point of contact for their veteran-related questions
and needs as they navigate the college system. The overall goal is to deliver services to optimize
academic success, which involves collaboration with all GWC student support services and
other organizations including, U.S. Vets, O.C. Vets and the Veterans Administration. The Center
operates without a budget. All of the furniture and equipment have been donated.
Most importantly, the VRC provides students with a place to socialize with fellow veterans and is
a meeting place for the newly established GWC Student Veteran Organization. There is no better
way for veterans to adjust to campus life than with students who share their experiences.
Veterans are accustomed to working as a team and students who make a connection with other
students are more likely to achieve their educational goals. Students were asked what the VRC
meant to them and they gave similar responses, “I no longer feel alone or isolated,” “it gives me
a sense of belonging,” “it is a place to meet other students who I can relate to.”
With an estimated 2.2 million veterans residing in California, the state leads the nation in
the number of veterans. That number is expected to increase dramatically as more military
personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan complete their service. In 2009, more than 26,600
veterans utilized education benefits at a California community college.
Golden West College was selected by G.I. Jobs magazine as a
Military-Friendly School for 2011. This honor places the college in
the top 15% of all schools nationwide.

Annual Fund
Cash contributions to the Foundation’s annual fund are a critical source
of private support for the college. Annual fund donations finance the
scholarship program and other endeavors that strengthen the college.
Memorial Gifts
Gifts in memory of loved ones and friends — or gifts which honor living
individuals — are gratefully accepted by the Foundation.
Such contributions are often used to reflect the interests or talents of
the person being honored. The Foundation is pleased to help potential
donors explore appropriate uses for the memorial gifts.

The Golden West College Foundation may be named a beneficiary.
Donation of a life insurance policy to the Foundation entitles the donor
to a tax deduction for the cash surrender value.

Pillars of Support
The first Pillars of Support were inducted at the inaugural
Courtyard of Honor Ceremony in 1995. Since that time,

The Alumni Pillar of Achievement program
was initiated by the 25th Anniversary
Committee in 1991. As a part of this
celebration, the first honorees were installed
on September 12, 1991. This past October the
Foundation inducted three new recipients,
bringing the total number of inductees to 86.
Candidates shall have completed at least 30
units at Golden West College ten years prior
to their nomination and achieved notable
recognition in their field of endeavor.

Since 1986, the Golden West College Foundation has
processed over $4,000,000 for student scholarships.
Each scholarship application involves a process of
review by a scholarship committee who selects the
recipients based upon individual scholarship criteria.
At the Scholarships and Awards Ceremony held in
May, over 200 scholarships were awarded to GWC
students. The Scholarships & Awards Ceremony
recognizes both the scholarship recipients and the
donors who support them. The ceremony is held
annually in the beautiful GWC Amphitheater.
