CONSEQUENCES
According to the latest government report, more than one-third (37.1%)
of U.S. pregnancies are unintended and slightly higher than the rate
(36.5%) of unintended pregnancies in 1982. These statistics show that
not much has changed, which is very unfortunate because unintended
pregnancies are related to social, economic, and health consequences
for both mothers and their children. Women who become pregnant
unintentionally are more likely to delay prenatal care, smoke, and not
breast-feed, and their children are more likely to experience poorer
health during childhood. With these and other outcomes in mind,
women are strongly encouraged to make conscious decisions related
to their sexual and childbearing responsibilities. Pregnancy and
motherhood are far too important to leave to chance.
