BISHOP NIGEL’S
THOUGHT FOR
THE MONTH
Not ‘my
will’ but thine ...
MORE than 6,000 people attended
our eleven borough services to
celebrate The Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee, and to thank God for her
outstanding example of dedication
to duty and unstinting commitment
to service.
Recently the Australian Girl
Guides deleted from their promise
all reference to God (and The
Queen).
The key word in their new
promise is “my” - an unwelcome
collusion with the fashionable “mefirst”
culture that quickly leads to
greed and selfishness.
Of course, encouraging selfesteem
is an important counterbalance
to the feelings of worthlessness
that disable many people’s
lives - not least when the rich get
richer and the poor get poorer.
Christianity has a good way of
defining the importance of self. “It
is no longer I who live, but it is
Christ who lives in me” (Galatians
2:20) - a truth symbolised by the
sign of the cross, with the “I”
crossed not to erase self but to add
to self.
The New Testament offers several
lists of how that can make a difference
to attitudes and behaviour -
including one in Galatians (5:22-23).
The Spirit enables us to act
towards others with Christ-like selfcontrol,
gentleness, faithfulness,
generosity, kindness, patience,
peace, joy and love. That is our duty
and service.
Cath to be Mothers’
Union president
BISHOP Nigel and the Board of Trustees are delighted
to announce that Mrs Catherine Hilton is to be
President of Mothers' Union in the Diocese from
January 2013.
Cath, who is currently a
General Trustee, will be supported
by the Archdeaconry
Presidents, Carol Eyles
(Salford) and Sandra Bradshaw
(Manchester) who will serve a
second term of office, while
two new presidents also take
office in January. They are
Christine Faulkner (Bolton) and
Marion Ball (Rochdale).
Please pray for Cath and her team as they look
forward with excitement to their new challenges.
Thanks for helping to re-build
St Denys' School in Pakistan
A previous CRUX reported that four Manchester vicars
visited St Denys’ School last November and discovered
it had suffered from arson. It caters for girls, including
boarders, with their parents living in remote rural areas.
Bishop Nigel launched a Lent Appeal and between
us we gave £2,620 which is added to £2,000 from the
Restricted Fund of the Lahore Link in Manchester
Diocese. This will encourage Bishop Irfan Jamil when
he is enthroned as Bishop of Lahore in September.
Please pray for him.
Canons Phil Rawlings and Maurice Smith, together
with the Revd John Faraday, hope to be present at the
enthronement and to re-visit the school.
National Churches Trust grant
ST Thomas and St John, Radcliffe is one of 30 places
of worship to receive a share of grants totalling
£546,000 from the National Churches Trust.
The £10,000 to St Thomas and St John will help
with masonry repairs and the repointing of walls.
The Grade II listed Gothic church, consecrated in
1864, is in the perpendicular style. It is the Town
Church for Remembrance Day and is home to Girl
Guides and Rainbows and a toddler group open to all.

CRUX – Keeping you in touch
It’s time to look ahead
THE diocesan annual report, which doubles
as a calendar, provides an attractive and informative
insight into all aspects of church life in
the diocese.
Stewardship is the headline theme of the
report, showing just how significant and
far-reaching stewardship principles are in fulfilling
our mission.
The application of these principles will
look different in every parish, which is where
discussions with the Stewardship Officer,
James Emmerson, will prove valuable.
The Stewardship Committee encourages
parishes to go much further in their focus on
resources than simply appealing for some more
money to pay the bills.
Learning to promote positively the links
between mission and ministry, providing imaginative
opportunities for volunteers, and teaching
about the biblical emphasis on generosity are all
key elements, and James is available to provide
input and guidance to your PCC and Deanery
Synod.
Now is also an ideal time to be looking ahead
towards 2013 and specific stewardship activity.
You could consider the ‘Good Enough for God’
3
(jigsaw) campaign, used by over 100 parishes to
great effect; and the calendar highlights key
dates in the liturgical calendar and gives monthly
tips on ‘increasing giving’.
Spare copies of the annual report (that runs
through until March 2013) are available from
James Emmerson, 0161 828 1474. James’ latest
newsletter is also available on the diocesan website.
A cedar to mark
Archbishop Temple’s
anniversary
THE Bishop of Manchester and Debbie
Weissman, President of International Council
of Chritians and Jews planted a cedar tree in
the garden of Bishopscourt to commemorate
the 70th anniversary of the founding of the
Council by Chief Rabbi Hertz and Archbishop
William Temple in 1942.
The tree will grow in the grounds of the
home where William Temple lived when he was
Bishop of Manchester. Bishop Nigel is also the
current Chairman of the Council of Christians
and Jews - and he was born in 1942, the same
year that the Council was founded.

A day to share with the family
5
MANCHESTER Cathedral
hosted two joyful ordination
services over the past few
weeks. 18 priests and 11
deacons were ordained in
the cathedral.
The events were enjoyed
by everyone that attended.
Family and friends gathered
in large numbers to witness
the ordinations, and to mark
the beginning of new stages
in the life and ministry of
those taking part.
Please continue to pray
for our new ministers and
their ministry in our diocese.
Ask that God the Holy
Spirit will give them the gifts
needed for service. Pray too
for their friends and families.

6 August 2012
ASSISTANT Bishops are often, but not exclusively,
retired bishops who are appointed by the
diocesan bishop to exercise episcopal ministry in
the diocese. This ministry, e.g. confirmation,
licensing or ordination, is delegated by the
diocesan bishop and the assistant bishops
always minister under his authority.
This month we introduce four of our assistant
bishops. Bishop Nigel is always grateful for the
willingness of bishops Frank Sargeant, Rupert
Hoare, Graham Dow and Jack Nicholls who
now minister as assistant bishops in retirement.
The Bishop of Beverley, Martyn Jarrett, is
also an assistant bishop in the diocese and
Bishop Nigel is also grateful to him for all he
brings to this role, and for the episcopal ministry
they share. We will be saying farewell to Bishop
Martyn in September’s CRUX on his retirement.
Frank Sargeant
Behind the front line ...
I trained at St John’s
College and Cranmer
Hall Durham with a break
for National Service when
I was engaged in the Suez
Crisis with a commission
in the Royal Artillery. I
learned more about pastoral
care in the army than
anywhere else.
My first 15 years of ministry were spent as a
parish priest in my native Lincolnshire. From
Lincoln I moved with Sally and family to Bradford.
There I led the Education and Training team with a
base at the Cathedral first as a Residentiary Canon
and then as Archdeacon of Bradford.
I retained my training responsibilities when I
was appointed to be Bishop of Stockport. At that
time I was the Central Chaplain to the Mothers’
Union.
Unexpectedly, I was invited by the Archbishop
of Canterbury to be his Chief of Staff as Bishop at
Lambeth for five years before coming to Salford on
retirement in 1999, where I act as an assistant priest
at St Philip’s.
I regard my contribution as assistant bishop to be
available in emergencies and to undertake specific
roles as requested by the diocesan bishop.
My hobbies include watercolour painting and
ceramics. My book on Canon Peter Green was published
last November. I maintain an interest in the
Church in Pakistan where I served as Bishop of
Karachi in a vacancy in see in 2000.
Jack Nicholls
THE son of manual
workers, I am proud of
my Rossendale roots and
have never lost my
accent!
I read Theology at
King’s College London,
trained at St Boniface
College, Warminster, and
was ordained in
Manchester Cathedral.
I served my curacies at St Clement with St
Cyprian, Ordsall in Salford and All Saints and
Martyrs, Langley where I later became vicar. It was
also here that I became convinced of the Church’s
need for more prayer and more parties, a motto
which has informed my ministry ever since!
After being Director of Pastoral Studies at the
College of the Resurrection at Mirfield, I returned to
Manchester as Director of Post Ordination Training.
In 1990 I was ordained Bishop of Lancaster, with
special responsibility for mission. I was Bishop of
Sheffield until my retirement in 2008.
I have tried to champion causes in society
which I believe impinge on the Gospel message.
In Sheffield I campaigned against the BNP, the
sighting of a super casino, sex trafficking and
loan sharks.
‘I became convinced of the Church’s need
for more prayer and more parties’

... meet the diocesan back four
I was much involved in building better relations
with other faith groups and between different
Christian communities.
I have a lifelong association with religious
communities, first visiting Mirfield aged 14 and
discovering my vocation to the priesthood there on
retreat. I was Warden of the Community of St Mary
the Virgin, Wantage, and am currently Visitor of the
Oratory of the Good Shepherd.
I love singing opera, reading history, pilgrimages
and after dinner speaking. I am married to Judith;
we have four children
and 12 grandchildren.
Rupert Hoare
I SERVED my curacy at
Oldham Church where I
used to take the Youth
Club. I married Gesine
and we began married
life in Oldham. We now
live in Saddleworth.
Gesine and I enjoy
being back in this diocese,
picking up our links with Oldham Parish
Church and the parish and school in Beswick. We
now have four children and ten grandchildren!
In the intervening years we have been at
Queen’s College Birmingham, then back in
Manchester, where I was parish priest in Beswick,
Birmingham Cathedral and from there to Westcott
House, Cambridge as Principal. In the Midlands I
was Bishop of Dudley; and in Liverpool Dean and
Assistant Bishop.
As an Assistant Bishop, I take confirmations
annually here and in Liverpool, I have shared a
teaching assignment with the three full-time
bishops; a number of people come to talk with
me from this and other dioceses on a regular
basis, I take part in diocesan services in the
cathedral and represent Bishop Nigel and the
other bishops occasionally in their absence.
I am heavily involved ecumenically in the
Anglican-Lutheran Society and its international
conference this September at Mirfield. After that, I
relinquish my responsibilities there, and trust that
we can spend more time with our grandchildren.
Graham Dow
I DATE my personal
commitment to Christ to
the preaching of the evangelist
Billy Graham at
Wembley Stadium when
I was 12 years old.
I studied chemistry,
then theology, at Oxford,
where later, as Chaplain
to St John’s College, I
prepared a promising
Tony Blair for confirmation.
In Britain and abroad I have a teaching ministry,
speaking on The Bible, prayer and spiritual warfare,
spiritual renewal and The Holy Spirit, the ministry
of deliverance, a Christian understanding of daily
work and Christian social action.
I have trained others in simple skills in healing
prayer extensively in India and Pakistan, in
Mozambique and South Africa, in Scandinavia, as
well as in Carlisle and London dioceses and in
Coventry where I was a vicar for 11 years.
I am passionate about developing the ministry
of lay people and introduced an innovative pattern
for this in both London and Carlisle.
I retired as Bishop of Carlisle in 2009. Before
that I was Bishop of Willesden in the Diocese of
London. I am now an assistant bishop in the dioceses
of Manchester and Chester.
Married to Molly, who offers spiritual direction,
we have four children and seven grandchildren.
In my leisure time I enjoy reading political
biographies, world travel, wildlife parks, steam
trains and model railways (in my garden).
IN PRAISE OF YOUTH WORK
Changing lives,
growing confidence
SUSIE MAPLEDORAM, Diocesan Youth
Officer, says: “We have a huge amount to celebrate
in terms of our work with young people in
this diocese. In these projects, you’ll see that the
thread of building and nurturing relationships
is key and is the bedrock of our work in both
urban and rural contexts.
People often ask how you measure success in
youth work. I think we’d often like it to be
about numbers, but real success is borne out
when lives are changed through relationships.
Because of the relationships that are cultivated
in our youth work we see young people grow in
confidence, self-esteem and aspirations – and
done in the name of our God who changes us
through our relationship with Him.
Your continued support and prayers for this
important work is appreciated so much.
❐ JENNY EDEN is Lead Youth Worker at the
Diggle and Uppermill Ecumenical Youth Project
(DUEYP).
ESTABLISHED and supported by local churches,
originally to help combat anti-social behaviour in
the village on Friday nights, DUEYP aims to
enable young people to fulfil their potential by providing
a positive alternative to harmful lifestyles;
enabling them to have fun in a safe, youth-friendly
environment.
Starting from a belief that every young person
is valued and has great potential, DUEYP provides
an informal setting for building relationships and
an opportunity for sharing elements of the
Christian faith in relevant and contemporary ways.
Jenny says, “Our approach is relational, meeting
young people where they are and seeking to walk
beside them as they navigate the challenges of life.
“Every young person is unique, and we try to
work with them individually, learning to understand
them and giving them whatever support they
need - personal, social, emotional or spiritual - in a
variety of ways; from one-to-one support to openaccess
groups and targeted programmes.”
“Most of the young people we are currently
working with have no connection to church and no
interest and little understanding of the Christian
faith, yet through the work we do, providing a safe
space and opportunities to question and learn, we
have seen many begin to explore new ideas. It is a
privilege to be part of that process.”
YPAC (Youth Project at Apostles and
Cuthberts) in Miles Platting.
YPAC works with young people aged 10 to 19.
They are supported in every aspect of their lives, in
school, through home visits and working with their
families, to youth sessions in the evenings and
weekend residentials. Eventually young people
have the opportunity to become youth leaders and
volunteers, supporting their peers and contributing
to their community.
Andrew told CRUX, “At the heart of YPAC is a
challenge by God each and every day, to ‘go and
rebuild my Church.’ We endeavour to do this by
being a practical expression of God’s love in the
community, reaching out to young people in Miles
Platting and Ancoats, enabling them to build their
skills and self-esteem, increasing their aspirations
and being responsible community members.
“We believe in establishing valued and trusting
relationships with young people which continue
into adulthood. We meet young people where they
are. Our role is to not to formally educate them, but
to work with them. We help them learn from one
another so they aspire to be positive role models
for others.
“The impact of the economic downturn and
substantial budget cuts in public services has
impacted everyone, not least the young people
here. There are many ways in which we all can feel
poverty, with some more obvious than others.
Lack of income, or access to education and
nutritious food are easy to measure, yet there is
also poverty of aspiration which is harder to
quantify.
“In these uncertain times we strive to respond to
the poverty of aspiration through our ministry of
‘Faith in our Community and Believing in Young
People’.”
❐ LUCY BANNISTER is Team
Leader for EDEN, Old Trafford -
a project for children and young
people run in partnership with St
Bride’s Church.
IN PRAISE OF YOUTH WORK
The Eden Project
At EDEN we try to do things differently.
We believe the key to seeing
an area transformed is Jesus; the key
to showing people Jesus, is being
salt and light; and the key to being
salt and light in an area is making it
your home.
Being salt and light in Old
Trafford for us at times has meant
being kept awake by next-door’s
constant arguments through paperthin
walls; discovering first-hand the
apathy and low self-esteem that riddle
the area; and experiencing the
stigma of having an M16 postcode
when looking for insurance.
It meant learning that here we
celebrate Mothers’ Day, but not
Fathers’ Day. It meant getting used
to the smell of weed, and being part
of an area that is so multicultural,
everyone can feel they are the
minority, at times.
For me, it meant blurring the line
that separates my work life from my personal
life. While it’s important to keep time to relax,
my neighbours are friends, not projects, targets
or service users.
For us as a team, it meant putting less importance
on running events and clubs, in order to
make more time to have brews with people.
Clubs can be important, but investing in relationships
is the key. We run a weekly drop-in, an
after-school club and a discipleship group, but
continuously ask ourselves whether they are the
most productive way of investing in people. By
asking that question regularly, we ensure we
THE EDEN WAY : Young people emjoying an energetic
Eden trip, and (below) the Eden team
keep the right motives and don’t get caught up in
programmes!
For the young people, it means having youth
workers who are also their neighbours and
friends, who experience first-hand both the good
and the frustrating things they face.
It means having support that doesn’t just stop
and drive back to a more comfortable life when
the shift finishes.
At times, it can be challenging. But, on the
whole, it is an amazing privilege to be a part of
the lives of some incredible people who live
here.

CRUX – Keeping you in touch
A lesson in caring and sharing
A NEW teaching space at St
Paul’s Church of England Primary
School in Royton was officially
opened by the Bishop of Beverley.
He blessed and dedicated the new
classrooms and presented new
crosses to the children.
One section of the school was
created for children from across
Oldham with complex communication
difficulties, which may
include autism.
The other was built to renew
and enhance the school’s
Foundation Stage provision.
The new teaching space is the
result of a £500,000 investment
by the Local Authority, Manchester
Diocese and St Paul’s
School itself.
St Paul’s School has always
been proud of its inclusivity,
where specialist help for children
with language and speech difficulties
takes place alongside teaching
of the whole class.
In this environment pupils
learn to understand and develop
empathy for others who find it hard to communicate,
and they have always shown a great level of
care and protection towards them.
Potential
Additionally, mainstream pupils with lesser
communication difficulties benefit from the
specific expertise within the school.
Commenting on the building of the new
teaching space, headteacher Mrs Joanne Caine
said: "I am so grateful to all who have worked to
make this dream a reality.
“I know governors and staff both past and
11
Pupils with some of the crosses presented by Bishop Martyn
present are very proud of this achievement. We
will continue to respect and uphold the dignity
and potential of all learners here at St Paul's.”
Chair of Governors, Fr Peter McEvitt, paid
tribute to the local authority and the diocese. He
said: “This has been a major piece of work in the
long history of St Paul’s school which first
opened its doors in 1833.
“Everyone involved deserves the highest
praise for their hard work and dedication, often
Manchester’s SCP Six in Rome
SIX Manchester priests attended the first
International Conference of the Society of
Catholic Priests (SCP) in Rome.
This Anglican Society was founded in 1994
as a support network for Anglican clergy in the
Catholic wing of the Church of England who
are entirely supportive of women priests and
bishops.
The Manchester Chapter has been operating
for ten years and has a lively programme of
events and activities supporting women and
men in their priestly ministry. The annual conference,
hosted in Manchester in 2006, is an
important event in the calendar. In the last
few years SCP has spread to Australia and
North America, so this year’s conference was
the first to be held outside the UK.
More than 80 participants made the journey
to Rome. The theme was “St Paul in Rome”
and the keynote speaker was Paula Gooder -
born and brought up in Manchester. Her lively
and penetrating exposition of the Letter to the
Romans was a huge hit with the conference.
The trip included a visit to Ostia Antica,
Rome’s ancient port; and the group were
warmly received at the remarkable papal basilica,
St Paul outside the Walls, where the historic
meeting between Archbishop Michael Ramsay
and Pope Paul VI took place in 1966.
One of the memorable events of the week
was attending a papal audience along with
about 8000 Roman Catholic pilgrims. Pope
Benedict gave a homily in seven languages and
greeted groups from all over the world.
The group also attended a reception at the
Anglican Centre and learnt something of its
important ecumenical work. The conference
closed with a concelebrated Eucharist at the All
Saints’ Anglican Church, a wonderful piece of
Victorian England in the heart of a Catholic and
baroque city.
Daniel Burton adds: “ As ever, fun and
friendship were central to the experience of an
SCP conference and we returned all too soon,
yet thankful for our time together.”
FATHER Roger William Davison has celebrated the
Fr Roger trained for the priesthood at Kelham,
Manchester Cathedral.
During his time at Tonge Moor he did much to
promote the aims of the Company of Mission
his fatherly advice and encouragement. He was
CORRECTION
In an article in last month’s CRUX - On the wild
side at St Chad’s - we said the church bought the
neglected area of land before turning it into a wildlife
garden. This was incorrect. The land was an
overgrown area of the rectory garden. The diocese
gave St Chad’s permission to turn it into a wildlife
garden and the land still belongs to the diocese.
