THE PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
Dear Parents,
Let me take this opportunity
to thank everyone for the
warm reception into
Davidson Elementary
School. The kind words,
welcoming gifts, personal
greetings, notes and letters
have been so inviting. As
I get to know the staff,
students, and parents, my anticipation is high as
this connection continues to grow into a lasting
relationship. Davidson Elementary is beaming with
success and potential as we begin our work in
partnership.
As we enter this last quarter of the school year, we
do so with excitement. Although testing and
assessments can be stressful for students and
teachers, I also like to look at this as a time to shine.
Students have worked hard all year. I challenge
each student to use this ingrained knowledge and
let it glow all over the assessments, showing the
amazing abilities of the Davidson students. We
want our students to feel comfortable and successful
through this period. As parents, your role is vital as
you are the basis of an important support system.
Testing and assessments can be stressful,
understandably. Students want to do their best and
teachers thrive on the success of students. Just as
important is what data can do for us as educators.
As principal, I am a huge proponent of data
collection for instructional guidance. The year-end
assessments provide school and instructional
leaders with valuable information to formulate
future instruction for students as individuals.
Our 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grade students just completed
our mock EOG testing as a way to prepare them
for the May testing. The teachers have worked
diligently to examine the data collected from these
mock assessments, which will in turn drive their
instruction for the upcoming month before EOGs
actually arrive in May. My hats off to the teachers and
facilitators for their efforts as they strive for success
for each student. I am excited about the results our
students have already exhibited and know they will
be well prepared over the next few weeks of study.
As the end of the year approaches, we as
educators are available to provide all the support
we can for our students to be successful. In turn,
we truly appreciate the support parents provide
for the children we serve. In partnership, we can
provide the best education for our joint purpose, the
students.
For the present and the future,
Mr. Dana R. Jarrett, Principal
NEWS FROM YOUR PTO
Dear DES Friends,
Let the fun begin! We’re in the home stretch of the
2011/2012 school year and this is probably the
most fun and exciting quarter of the entire year,
starting with the kick-off of Spring Break!
The PTO wishes all of you a very fun and safe Spring
Break. We hope you have some adventures, some
time to relax, and some time to get yourselves ready
for the final push to the start of summer. There are
some great activities planned, though, for the month
of April that you won’t want to miss.
Our biggest spring event is ArtFest, scheduled for
Thursday, April 12. I know that I’m not alone in
saying this is one of my favorite DES events. There
are so many ways that we are celebrating the arts in
our school with this one night.
Every single student in school will have a piece of art
on display for viewing in the hallways. Every student
will have the opportunity to showcase what they’ve
learned in music class, whether that is singing a
song with the rest of their grade level or playing their
recorders in the 4 th and 5 th grades. New this year,
we have opened “South Street Square” in the lower
lobby to highlight the talents of about 25 students in
a street performance environment. These students will
play musical instruments, sing, act, or read poetry. I
can’t wait to see the talents of our young artists!
The night wouldn’t be complete without a silent
auction and a raffle and we’ve got both scheduled
for ArtFest. Be sure to check out the special,
one-of-a-kind items that are up for bid. For my son
and I, that is always the most fun part of the night.
We “won” some great things last year and I can’t
wait to start bidding!
Please mark your calendars, too, for the April 21
running event Miles for Marnie. The event is inspired
by a very brave DES student named Marnie Howiler
and all proceeds will go to The Marnie Jude
Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. It was
so touching last year to see Marnie’s enthusiasm and
excitement the morning of the run. While I certainly
don’t run well, I will be there (laced up and ready to
go!) to support her and her family and I encourage
all of you to do the same. (See page 3 for details.)
Lastly, we are excited to announce that we have just
received confirmation from Davidson College
regarding our Charity Challenge Basketball Game
with J.V. Washam. Mark your calendars for Tuesday,
April 24! This is a signature event in which our two
schools will come together to raise money for the
Ada Jenkins center. In addition to supporting a great
cause, the basketball game is just plain fun. We’ve
got a lot of new things planned this year to make it
even more special. You won’t want to miss it.
As always, I encourage you to take advantage of
all of the great things that Davidson has to offer this
month. It’s going to be fun!
Wishing you all the best…
Tammy Forthofer, DES PTO President
CONGRATULATIONS ELIZABETH NICHOLSON —
DAVIDSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’S TEACHER ASSISTANT
OF THE YEAR!
Totp Guest month
Warm weather in March has made Guest
Month a great success! Class winners of the Guest
Month challenge will be announced the week
after Spring Break and parties to the top classes in
grades K-2, and 3-5 will be awarded.
Davidson Tigers are running more than ever,
already eclipsing the grand total in miles from
last year! Can you believe our students have run
over 24,000 miles?!? April is the last full month of
tallying for TOTP with Town Day on May 5 being
the grand finale! Students are encouraged to
come out and participate in the Fun Run or the 5K
race and wear their TOTP t-shirts. Look for more
information about Town Day races coming soon.
As always, we could not have such a great Tigers
On the Prowl program without the generous
support of our sponsors. Many thanks to Artisan
Custom Homes, Cashions, The Families of CrossFit
Davidson, Julie Lopez, Mary Lib Richards, and
Elizabeth Nicholson, Reading Assistant for grades K-2, has
been chosen by her peers as the 2012 Teacher Assistant of
the Year. Mrs. Nicholson is in her second year at Davidson
Elementary, assisting last year in Mrs. Walker’s AU class.
What most people don’t know about Mrs. Nicholson,
though, is that she’s spent the last 30 years teaching in
Vermont.
“I actually came to North Carolina to retire!” says Nicholson.
“I fell in love with the Davidson community and school and
BEGGED (former principal) Mrs. Hall for a job. So much for
retirement! I love working with this incredible staff and beginning readers.”
Peers who nominated Mrs. Nicholson had this to say about her: “She clearly takes joy in learning
for herself and in teaching her students. Each of her students looks forward to their time with
her, and strives to succeed under her tutelage. Her influence extends past their academic skills,
and has a positive effect on their attitudes towards scholastic achievement, social skills, and
personal behavior.”
Mrs. Nicholson has experience in elementary classrooms, special education,
reading, and behavior. When not teaching, she spends time with her husband,
Peter, their daughter, Heather, and dog Geo. She loves to quilt, walk, kayak,
and read in her spare time.
Congratulations, Mrs. Nicholson!
book fair wrap up
The sun has set on the spring book fair luau but
with lasting benefits for DES! We had record
spring sales of $17,625.48 thanks to all of your
support.
Book fair profits have enabled many new
purchases of book collections, classroom
dictionaries, and thesauruses, with encyclopedia
sets soon arriving.
To be exact, students have purchased 7,186 new
titles from both fall and spring book fairs. This
translates into a total of 1,293,480 voluntary
reading minutes by Davidson Elementary students.
What bigger reward than knowing children are
supplementing their reading with new books
hand-picked at our book fairs. All this would
not be possible without the many volunteers —
THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
We’ll see you at the fall All Star Book Fair,
“Where Every Reader Is A Star.”
Town Day on Saturday, May 5 from
10 a m - 3 pm. We will be hosting our
annual Cake Walk which is fun for kids of
all ages! Like last year, we will have the
“Best Cakes” contest, and new this year,
we will be selling a portion of the cakes
for $10. This is an important fundraising
opportunity for our school and we hope you
will be able to help us by donating baked
goods. Please stay tuned to the weekly PTO
The 4 th Annual Run Too Overcome
(RTO) was a great success this year
with more registrants than ever at 700
— about 60 of which were our own
DES students, teachers and parents. The
proceeds will go to the EC classes at the
participating schools, including DES.
All the kids and teachers had fantastic
runs and enjoyed live music from local
kids bands, a cheering section of all the
schools different mascots, and our very
own Mr. Rabb passing out medals to the
kids as they crossed the finish line.
Thank you students,
teachers, sponsors
and volunteers!
You should all be
proud of yourselves!
SLT AT WORK
The School Leadership Team (SLT)
conducted a survey of Davidson Elementary
School parents and guardians to better
understand how the school is perceived.
More than 290 families completed the
survey, representing 47% of the school’s
population. The SLT is extremely pleased
with the response and is currently working
to analyze the data. Members of the SLT will
work with administrators to effectively
communicate the results of the survey along
with an action plan in the coming months.
The SLT continues to look for opportunities
to enhance educational opportunities and
support the goals of the School Improvement
Plan. An information and curriculum night is
planned March 22 from 6 — 7 pm for
Davidson Elementary’s ESL (English as a
Second Language) families, and the team
is excited to collaborate with Mr. Jarrett as
he begins his tenure as the principal of our
school.

RIXEY TERRY PLAYS THE LEAD ROLE IN
A BEAR CALLED PADDINGTON
Rixey Terry is an 11-year-old student in the 5 th grade at Davidson
Elementary School. He is playing the lead role of Paddington in the
Connie Company’s April production of “A Bear Called Paddington.”
“I’ve had a love of plays since I was in preschool and attended
many of Davidson Community Players summer camps for kids,”
said Rixey in an interview with Pat Patterson, Marketing Director
for the Players. The show’s Director, Wrenn Goodrum, says
that Rixey was born to play this role. Here is part of that
interview:
What attracted you to the stage to perform in plays?
Plays aren’t just to entertain others, they are to entertain yourself
and they are a lot of fun to do.
What was your first big role? I played the whiney little brother of
Ralphie in “A Christmas Story” in 2010. The funniest thing
happened to me on stage during the dress rehearsal. I had to fit
into a size 6 snow suit and I was a much bigger size. The first time
they put me in it, I couldn’t move my arms or legs and had to waddle out on stage. The
costume designer realized the mistake and got me a different outfit to wear.
What do you like most about playing your current role as Paddington? This play is about
all the adventures that Paddington has. He is always really sweet and innocent, no matter what
the other characters say or do to him. He’s so nice.
What’s the most challenging part of this role? I’m learning how to speak in a British accent
and that has been tough.
Is doing this play fun or hard work? It’s both. It’s lots of responsibility; we have to read the
script, analyze the character, take stage direction from the director, memorize the lines, work
with lighting, sound and props and finally perform eight times for the audiences. In one scene,
the sink is broken and sprays water all over me and Emily Dyckman. We get soaking wet and
everyone will laugh.
Tell me about rehearsals. We rehearse four times each week and that is great. This is the
funniest cast I’ve ever been with and we have bonded as a group of actors. We joke together
and laugh a lot.
What are your favorites? Food – sushi; video game - Wii ‘Just Dance’, color – red
Any advice for other kids about acting? Try taking an acting class or go to an audition.
When you act, you can be anyone and it releases a whole other side of you.
Seven Year Old Cancer
Survivor Gears Up for
Race
Marnie Howiler is a 2 nd -grader at Davidson
Elementary School who has inspired her family,
friends and community to join together in the fight
against pediatric cancer. Just days after starting
kindergarten, Marnie was diagnosed with Stage
IV Wilms Tumor, a type of kidney cancer. She and
her family fought tirelessly through eight months of
grueling chemotherapy and radiation treatments and
today Marnie is cancer free.
The Marnie Jude Foundation for Children’s Cancer
Research was founded by Marnie’s parents, in honor
of their beautiful, strong and courageous little girl. On
April 21, 2012, the second annual Miles for Marnie
Duathlon and 5K event will be held at Davidson
Elementary School. Last year, $26,000 was raised
and donated to children’s cancer research.
This wonderful event features a duathlon that
consists of a 5K run, 18K bike and 5K run and
welcomes athletes to enter as an individual or a relay.
Miles for Marnie is also holding a 5K run/walk and
kid’s fun run. This family friendly event will conclude
with a celebration featuring bounce houses, face
painting, crafts, kid’s activities and a silent auction.
Register for Miles for Marnie at www. Active.com
or visit www.MarnieJudeFoundation.org for a link to
the registration form. Interested volunteers can sign
up to help by contacting the volunteer coordinator at
M4Mvolunteers@yahoo.com.
The fight against cancer continues every day for
too many children and the Marnie Jude Foundation
is dedicated to raising awareness and improving
funding for research. Come join the fun on April 21 st
and join Marnie as we fight against children’s cancer
together.
Come see Rixey in “A Bear Called Paddington” April 21, 22, 28 and 29. Shows are at 1 pm
and 4 pm at the Armour Street Theatre. Tickets are $10.
DES Chess Players Finish 13 th in the State
Seven members of the DES Chess Club participated in the North Carolina Scholastic Chess
“The group did a great job for their first time in competition,” said Chess Club Faculty Sponsor
Norma Dunbar. “We’ve benefited from
some top-rate instruction this year and
the clubs are very excited about what
they are learning. Five weeks ago, they
had never before competed against
kids from other schools much less
compete against state-ranked players.
We are very proud of all that they
have accomplished in such a short time.”
Students participating the state-wide
competition on the 17 th included: Alex
Mangiapane, Michael Lozada, Nicholas
March Madness — DES Style
March Madness came early at DES as the 18 th
annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was held
March 12-14. Faculty members Gerry Smith and
Walter Rabb coordinate this highly anticipated
and competitive event that feature 3-person boys
and girls teams from the 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grades
competing against each other on a grade-level
basis as a way to promote physical fitness,
encourage teamwork and foster good
sportsmanship among the participants. This year,
more than 100 students participated.
A special part of the tournament is the recognition
of those students who claim one of the
grade-level Good Sportsmanship Awards. Mr.
Smith noted, “In addition to some exceptional
basketball skills that were on display, there were
several students who exemplified a high level of
good sportsmanship. That’s the real goal of this
tournament — to teach our students that winning
is not the only thing that matters.”
Those recognized at the 2012 3-on-3 Tournament
for Outstanding Sportsmanship were: Oliver
O’Brien, Andres Pazos, Ethan Messer, Paola
Juarez, Ivy Montague and Jay Satchwill.
MORE NEWS YOU CAN USE
APRIL IS AUTISM MONTH
In honor of the special needs of
our AU students, PTO-Too shares
this poem by Armand Post
My little boy, this love of mine,
Does not know how to say;
Please give me room for every time,
His words get in the way.
You would not know by passing by,
The struggles everyday:
But try to look him in the eye,
You’ll see it in his face.
You may not understand how hard,
Small tasks in life can be;
How difficult to speak aloud,
Or learn your ABC’s.
And just because he doesn’t hug you,
Or kiss you hi and bye;
Doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you,
Please just give him time!
Through all the tantrums, fights and tears,
I look at him and see;
A little boy with tons of fears,
Who strives for normalcy.
Of course he sees he’s different,
But he just can’t see why;
Everybody’s time is spent,
Trying to make him ‘right’.
Open up your heart and mind,
And just watch quietly;
You’ll see a boy who’s really trying,
Just wants to be happy.
He’s just a scared little boy,
With every sight and sound;
I know he plays with just one toy,
And spins around and round.
I know sometimes he’ll yell and scream,
He simply cannot say;
Things have to be his way.
All he can say is ‘It’s not right’,
Sometimes it seems unreal;
He can’t express though try he might,
To tell you how he feels.
I know that he repeats himself,
And sometimes others too;
Believe me that does really help,
Anxiety to be removed.
So please be patient and be kind,
Love him everyday;
I know in your heart you will find,
A place for him always.
He is my special, beautiful boy,
Whom I love endlessly;
He is my gift, my love, and my joy
He’s everything to me
