Child Care Food Program:
Ensure all children enrolled in child care homes have
access to high-quality, nutritious meals!
For many children, the meals and snacks served within a child care setting are their best source
of nutrition and a great opportunity for them to learn healthy eating habits. Nutritious meals aid
children’s cognitive and physical development and contribute to school readiness.
WHAT IS CACFP?
A licensed child care
provider who serves
breakfast, lunch, and
snack to six children
has the potential to
receive at minimum
$25.50 daily and
$6,375.00 for the year
(250 days).
The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federal nutrition program that provides
reimbursement for nutritious meals and snacks served to children enrolled in child care programs.
In Colorado, CACFP is administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
(CDPHE). Reimbursement can be claimed for two meals and a snack or two snacks and a meal per
child per day.
WHAT PROVIDERS ARE SAYING:
“I know that being on the food program is a key indicator of quality child care. I think of myself as
offering the best quality care and the food program is part of that.”
“I use the food program as a marketing tool to parents. Because I’m on the food program, I follow
federal nutrition standards and open my home to the food program staff. Parents love it.”
“The meal reimbursement really makes a difference in the kind of food I can purchase for the
kids.”
“I love the nutrition activities and information I get from the food program.”
“From a financial point of view... the food program is always a great idea.”
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
All licensed childcare providers may participate in CACFP.
To participate, providers must:
• Serve meals that qualify for reimbursement
• Complete claim forms daily that track the number of children and meals served
• Submit the monthly claim form to sponsors
Child care providers are supported by one of the approved sponsors in Colorado. In addition to
program monitoring, sponsors educate and train providers on the program and its requirements,
provide the necessary materials for successful program participation, and offer free training at
least once a year.
To start receiving reimbursement for the meals and snacks
you serve, please contact a sponsor, listed on the BACKSIDE,
that serves in your area.
