In December 2012 a group of
S3 Business students took part
in a challenge set by Coca-Cola
to create, design and develop a
healthy juice drink. Coca-Cola
chose our team named ‘Fit-in’
as a regional finalist for their
Business Challenge and invited
the group to attend the regional
finals in Stirling in January this
year.
On the day of the challenge the
group set off from Newbattle at
7:30am, full of excitement and
intrigue at what the day would hold.
The event got off to a quick start with
all groups being welcomed and the
events of the day being set out.
The challenge of the day was based
around the Special Olympics, each
group had to come up with ideas to
advertise and promote or to fundraise
for the event.
The groups were allocated a Business
advisor from Coca-Cola who guided
them through their challenge. ‘Fit- in’
The Coca-Cola Real Business Challenge 2012
took to the challenge with fantastic
enthusiasm. They worked well with
their business advisor, taking on board
his advice.
All of ‘Fit-in’s’ hard work paid off
when they created and presented a
fantastic power point presentation to a
conference room of over 100 people.
They also played the radio advert that
they wrote and recorded themselves.
Congratulations to all of the members
of ‘Fit-in’ for working so hard and
being fantastic ambassadors for Newbattle
Community High School! Well
done!

Basketball Club 2012/2013
This has been a great year for the Basketball
club. We have a new coach —
PC Cochrane our community Police
Officer —who is an accomplished
player and is already making a difference
with the teams.
The senior Girls’ team, which now has
16 regular players who train on a Monday
night, has played in the Scottish
Cup and finishing 3 rd in the East of
Scotland League. They are set to go on
tour in East Lothian and the Borders
during the last week of June. We are
hoping they all stay together for next
year when they will be an awesome
force!
The S2 Boys team has played well all
year under the coaching of Dionne
Telfer and Andrea McGoldrick and has
had games against Gracemount and
Penicuik as well as Dalkeith.
We now have an S2/3 Girls squad who
are already fighting for places in the
senior girls’ team and showing real talent
for the game.
The senior boys this year have trained
together but have not competed against
other schools due to work and school
exams. This will change next year.
The senior girls’ team took a trip to the
Glasgow Emirates stadium to see the
National Basketball finals which
showed all involved the model performances
that could be achieved. Mr
Foley greatly enjoyed the half time entertainment!
We have had a great year and look forward
to welcoming all to Basketball
next session, come along and enjoy the
best team sport on offer at Newbattle.
