How to use this manual

How to use Manual – Mites
This Coaches manual is a guide from practice 1 through 48 for a 6 month
hockey season. Each practice consists of 3 skating stations, 3 skill stations
and 2 small games. The 6 puck skill and skating stations have been designed
according to a skills curriculum for Mites. Practices begin with the 3 skating
stations, followed by a small game, then the 3 skill stations and will end with
another small game.
The curriculum is based on 10 skills per month over the 6 month season that
Mites should be able to learn and practice. Each set of 10 skills per month
includes skating and puck handling skills.
Skills and drills are repeated throughout the manual. The drills have been
named so that players will begin to associate names with desired objective.
There is always a chaotic phase in each drill as players learn what is to be
performed. Coaches should demonstrate drills when they are taught and explained
for the first time. Many players learn well from visual demonstration.
There are no team systems in the Mites manual. Many of the small games
include players playing offense and defense. We believe that players at the
Mite level should play both which will greatly benefit their understanding of
the game. Small games which include support players force players to move
the puck quickly which leads to the understanding of breakouts and transitions.

A skills glossary is included as well as a description of positional play for every
player in all three zones.
We encourage Coaches to use this manual. It is our belief that players learn
and improve through fun, competitive practices that involve skating and skill
drills as well as small games from which Mite players will learn the basic principles
of offense and defense.
Keep practice competitive, keep players engaged and have fun!
What
Mites
should
know

What Mites Should Know
It is our belief that Mites Players should understand and be able to execute the
following team tactics and systems.
Face Offs in every zone
Break Outs
Option
Quick Up
4. Offensive Zone Attacks 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 1
5. Defensive Play 1 vs. 1, 1 vs. 2
6. Power Play –simple breakout and offensive zone
7. Penalty Kill –forecheck and defensive zone

8. Triangle –Offensive zone attack
9. 2 XMan Forecheck
10. Cycling
1
Backchecking
Team Systems can all be taught off ice. All players should have an understanding
of a specific team system before stepping on the ice. This will cut
down on players standing around, which turns out to be an inefficient use of
ice and cost of ice.
There is time in each practice to spend on Team Systems. The skating warm
up (if performed) and skating stations and skill stations should take about 35
minutes. This should leave 25 minutes to work on Team Systems and finish
with a Small Game.
Coaches should be use this time to introduce Team Systems at the beginning of
the year. During the course of the season, this time should be used to continue
to teach and work on Team Systems that need to improve.

Skills Description

squirt Skills
Starting
1.Open Body
knees bent
chest up
on balls of feet
first 3 steps on toes, then burst into full strides
2.Slide Crossover
same form as open body
but first step is a crossover
back foot crosses over front
body rotates during crossover to face
direction desired
3.Backwards Using Crossover
one hand on stick, chest up
do C cut with one leg
opposite leg crosses over the front of leg that initially
did C cut
get reset
repeat process starting with opposite leg

Forwards Skating
1.Tight Turns Around Cones
knees bent
lead with inside foot
lead with inside shoulder
lean into turn, drop inside hip
1.Head
2.Shoulder
3.Hips
4.Feet
2.Pivots Around Cones
a.Begin like tight turn
b.lead with inside hip…throw hips
c.lift inside leg…like a hockey stop
replant with foot angled back towards 2nd foot
towards cone
skate backwards
3.360degree Pivots Around Cones
a.tight turn…begin like this
d. continue into pivot
e.open up- toes point opposite direction as inside leg
is lifted and planted
outside leg follows
begin forwards stride
4. Slalom Skating-2 Legs
hips, legs, feet shift together
outside edge of one skate and inside edge of the
other skate lean together
keep feet on ice
shift to skate an “S” pattern

5.Slalom Sliding –one leg
lift one leg into air
use for balance
shift hips and weight from left to right
slalom in “S” pattern going from inside to outside
edge
6.Push a Partner
players face each other
both hold onto the same stick firmly at chest level
one player bends knees, digs in and pushes skating
forwards
the other player opens feet to form a “V” and provides
slight resistance digging gin with inside edges.
7.Pull a Partner
both players face the same direction
they both hold onto the same two sticks- one on each
side of the body
front player bends knees, digs in, skates forwards
and pulls
the back player provides slight resistance by slow
plowing
8.Crossovers
keep torso upright
lean into the turn
back leg crosses over the front leg
bend inside knee
inside leg is picked up and again placed in front
always using the outside edge of inside leg (skate)

9. Stride Jumps
alternate C cuts from one leg to the other
in this case, C cut with right leg
bound high and far into the air
land on the left leg and do a C Cut
repeat
Backwards Skating
1.In Motion, Glide One Foot, Jump
lift one leg for balance
support body by having balancing leg directly under
body frame
weight is on ball of foot
jump and land on same leg
2.V-Stop
toes point outwards
heals point towards each other
feet form a “V”
dig in with inside edges to stop
keep knees bent, chest up
explode into forwards skating
3.Crossovers
lean into turn
point with inside hip
outside leg crosses over inside
inside leg crosses from underneath back to original
position
repeat
use outside edge of inside leg
use inside edge of outside leg

Stopping
1. Two Foot Hockey Stop
skate forwards
open up with inside leg
lead with inside shoulder and hip
throw into stop
throw hips into stop
finishe with knees bent
both skates have turned 90degree from original
direction
2. Backwards 2 Foot Stop
throw hips in desired direction
lead with hip, leg will follow
end in 2 foot hockey stop
3. T Stop
in this case, right skate goes perpendicular to left
bridge (middle) of right skate is snug to heel of the
left
lean back so that outside edge of right (back) skate
digs into the ice
4. Flamingo Stop
in this case the player is moving from left to right
lift the left leg and stop using only the inside edge of
the right leg
Passing
1. Forehand
puck starts behind back foot
weight on back foot
long sweeping motion
transfer weight
follow through pointing at desired target
2.Backhand
same as forehand but passing with backhand side of
blade

3.Receive on Forehand Slide to backhand
receive pass on forehand side of body
slide puck and arms across front of body so that
puck is on backhand side
backhand pass
4.Board Pass to a Player In Motion
make a board pass past an opposing player to a
teammate in motion
5.Drop Pass
make drop pass away from desired offensive zone
attempt to leave the puck with little motion
player receiving puck is always further away from
net than player who drops the puck
6.One Touch
hands and stick in front of the body
bottom hand slides a little lower down stick
be strong with lower hand
blade is at slight angle to cup over stick when bring
one touched

Stickhandling
1. In Front of Body
back and forth from left to right
2.Forehand side
back and forth from front to back on backhand side
-elbow of top hand is behind body
3.Backhand
back and forth from front to back on backhand side
elbow of top hand is behind body
4. Stationary Tow Drag
start puck on forehand side as far away from body
as possible
hands are close together
pull puck with toe towards body
hands separate, stop puck beside body on forehand
side

5.Triangles, V Drags
trace the triangle
start with toe drag down 1st side
push puck up 2nd side – hands separate
slide puck along 3rd side – hands are still separated
trace the U
start with toe drag-hands together
hands widen as player pulls puck, then separates as
puck is pushed up the other side of the U
6. Under/Over
One player stands stationary
Stick is at 45degree angle
Player with the puck slides puck back and forth
underneath the stationary player’s stick
Pull with top hand and elbow
Bottom hand does not move much
Stick slides easily through palm of bottom hand
–lose grip
7. Triangles Around Defenseman’s Stick
the same as regular triangles but combines the
over/under
the player who is stick handling must bring their
stick up and over the stationary player’s stick
*in motionstationary player (inactive) now slowly
skates backwards. Player with puck skates forwards
while performing the triangles
8.Pull Puck from behinds body to inside edge of opposite
foot (this is a way of working on the toe drags)
Facing-stickhandle puck from in front of bodyforehand
sidebehind body
Use the motion of a toe drag to pull the puck to the
inside edge of opposite skate
Puck goes between legs and is then kicked up to
stick in front of the body
9. Drop puck to skates
pull puck with toe or back hand side towards skate
open intended skate and kick puck with the inside
edge of the skate up to stick
in this case with the left leg

Moves
1. Shoulder Fake
head fake to one side
shoulder drops and knee bends on this side as well
the puck should now be on this side of the body as
well
quickly go the other way and beat the opposing
player 1 vs. 1
2.Double Shoulder Fake
a.Shoulder fake to one side, then the other
3.Toe Drag into Pass
a.Toe drag from stick handling section
b.Fore hand pass from passing section
4.Fake Pass into Spinorama
a. while skating or standing, player drops shoulders
and hands towards ice making it look as through
they are going to pass
an opposing player may make a move to intercept
what they believe will be a pass
b.after the fake pass, place the backhand side of the
blade on the puck and make a 360degree spin.
spin all the way around to avoid the opposing player

Shooting
1. Wrist Shot
knees bent, weight starts on back leg
reach back so that puck is behind back leg
hands are on the front of the body
arms sweep in front of the body
weight transfers from back to front
follow through-point to target
2.Backhand
Same as the forehand but from the backhand side
Be strong and firm with the bottom hand
3.Snapshot
same fundamentals as the wristshot
start the puck at approx 45degrees out away from
the body
pull the puck with the toe of the blade towards the
body
pull the puck along the ice 68 inches
snap (open up)(flick) your wrists and come down on
the puck with the blade as hard as possible
follow through and point at the target
4.Slapshot
knees bent
back is bent and chest is over top of the puck
puck is approx in between feet
slide the bottom hand down the stick during wind up
be strong with bottom hand
swing down and hit the ice just behind the puck- this
will flex the stick increasing the power
follow through and point to the target

5.Roof It
slide bottom hand down the stick a little
dig in and get under the puck
shovel it towards the top of the net
6.Deflections
bend knees
face the shooter
position stick as a target
the puck may onlty need to move a couple of inches
to either the left or right to find a hole for a goa

Checking
1. Body-Shoulder
knees bent for balance
shoulder to shoulder
hands down
Receiving
get up against the boards (your body will absorb the
check better.)

Face offs
Defensive Zone Faces Off
C is responsible for opposing team’s Center
Inside Winger goes through circle out to defensemen
closest to boards
Outside winger stays in high slot, responsible for defensemen
who starts closest ot the middle of the ice
D 1 (in front of net) stands between Wingers on face off
and is responsible for opposing team’s Winger that starts
in front of net.
D 2 (hash marks on boards) is responsible for opposing
teams Winger that starts closest to the boards.
Offensive Zone Face Off
Center is responsible for opposing team’s Center if the
face off is lost
Winger on Boards- fore checks if face is lost, if face is
won, help get the puck to defensemen and get to the net,
support offensively.
Winger in front of net- be ready to fore check if the puck
comes behind the net to opposite corner, support each
other, and get to net if the face off is won.
Defensemen- support each other, move as though connected
by a string. If one is on the boards, the other is
in the middle of the ice and vice versa.

Breakouts
Option 3. D to D
D 1. –quick to puck
D 2. –start in front of the net but drop to opposite corner
Strong side Winger –start on hash mark on the boards
but begin to cut diagonally across the blue line in the
middle of the ice after the D to D pass has been made
and the puck begins to come up the other side of the ice.
Center –support both Defensemen by mirroring the puck
Weak side Winger –begin in slot but quickly get to hash
marks on the boards to become the strong side Winger
when the Defensemen make a D to D pass and the puck
begins to come up the opposite side as to where it began.
Defensive Zone
D 1. –go to man and puck in the first area of the corner
Center –is responsible for the second area of the corner
and the opposing team’s 2nd offensive player.
D 2. –in front of the net, look for man in this area
Strong side Winger –in slot but is responsible for defenseman
on the blue line who is closest to the middle of
ice. Must be aware of this defensemen who may jump
into the play to help offensively. Can also help D 2 in
front of the net.
Breakouts
Objectives
Limit time and space
Force offensive team to poor ice
Regain puck
Prevent scoring
Key Points
Man on man in zone
Finish checks
Head on a swivel, be aware around you
Control opponents stick in front of the net. They cant score with their feet
If wing is back, stay low until switch
Strong side winger can help out D 1 if offensive team is cycling out of the corner. A player going to
the net with the puck is more dangerous than a defensemen on the bleu line without the puck.
Use stick and body position to take away passing lanes
Fore the pack carrier towards the boards when down low. Don’t give up the back of the net
Don’t give time and space
Always stay between the player you are covering and the net

Offensive Zone Attacks
1 vs. 1
Always look to take the puck to a better scoring position
Use speed and creativity. Be deceptive with speed as
well.
Make a quick move and beat the defensemen with
speed
Don’t be afraid to use the defensemen as a screen and
shoot the puck through their skates or through their
skates and stick.
2 vs. 1
Puck carrier drive wide and then begin to take puck
to the net between the tops of the circle and the hash
marks.
Player without puck can
Drive to net (far post)
Drive to net and open up for one timer
Player without puck must try to suck defensemen to the
net to give puck carrier more time
Both players must go hard to the net and stop for rebounds

defensive play
1 vs. 1
Position yourself between the player you are covering
and the net
Keep head up
Keep top hand on your stick and poke check until the
point that you need more power and can steal the puck
Poke check from the hip. Top hand starts just in front of
the hip
Keep stick to the front of body, not the side. You over
commit and give up the zone in front of your body that
the offensive player wants to attack. You want to keep
your stick in front of the body to discourage the offensive
player from attacking the zone right around the front of
your body
Position yourself so that the offensive player must go
outside. You want to push to player towards the corner,
a less dangerous scoring position.
1
2
2 vs. 1
Stay in between the two offensive player
As you get closer to the goal you are defending, begin
a banana turn towards the player without the puck
Communicate with the goalie
The player without the puck is the one you must take
The puck carrier becomes the responsibility of the goalie

Power Play
Get all players into the offensive zone as quickly as possible
Outnumber the defensive players on the puck. If one defensive
player is on the puck, we must have two. If they
have two, we must have three
Gain control and move the puck to spread out the penalty
killers
Stick to stick passing. Keep the puck off of the boards.
A board pass my be tough to control and will give the
penalty killers the opportunity to attack.
Always have someone in front of the net to screen the
goalie and occupy the defensemen in front of the net.
Move puck away from pressure. Side to side and high
to low to make penalty killer adjust.
We are looking to create a 2 vs. 1 and find a seam to
the net
Shoot. All forwards crash the net on a shot
Penalty Killing
Set up in box and keep the offensive players to the outside
Protect the house
Use sticks to cut down passing lanes
Fore the offensive players to pass the puck up and down
the boards. Keep them out of the middle of the ice.
Stop and start. Attack in straight lines. Attack the puck
if possession is in questions, then come straight back to
the box and stop. No curling!
HAMMER the puck out of the zone
Change every 25-30 seconds if we get the puck down
the ice

offensive Zone attac
K
triangle
F 1. –puck carrier takes the puck wide into the zone
F 2. –middle man drive to the net. This is not taught by
everyone but will force the defensemen to make a decision
and will open up a hole in the slot.
F 3. – weak side winger (furthest from the puck) slow
down and come into the high slot. Become an option. If
F 2 drives to the net, there will be a hole in the slot for F
3 to receive the puck and have time to shoot.
1
2
2 man fore check
F 1 takes a good angle and goes hard to the puck.
Force the puck carrier either behind the net or up the
boards.
F 2 goes to the net and reads the play. If the D make a
D to D pass or carry the puck without pressure up your
side of the ice, be ready to attack.
F 3 stays as high man at the top of the circles. Be
ready to attack if a pass is made up the boards, or if
the D pinches, slide in behind to support D.
D jump up to the blue line. One is one boards on the
strong side if the ice, the other is in the middle. Always
work in tandem, support each other diagonally. If the
strong side D pinches, the other should slide out of the
zone towards the center ice dot to support diagonally.
If the puck is turned over, support offensively.

Cycling
Attempting to cycle the puck out of the corner and get it
to the net.
We cycle it back down to not take an unnecessary risk
and play the puck back down to the corner
Always use your body to protect the puck and cycle the
puck between your body and the boards. Do not cycle
it to the middle of the ice as the Defensemen will be
there and you will be taking the puck straight to them
Always have 1 player high in the slot
F 1 cycles the puck low and replaces F 3 in the slot
F 2 starts to leave the front of the net for the corner when
they see that they puck is going to be cycled. F 2 picks
up the puck.
F 3 leaves the high slot and shifts down towards the front
of the net but is also ready to jump towards the corner if
they puck is cycled again.
