Corporate Citizen <strong>of</strong> the Year – Doug Northey<br />
Sponsored by RBC Financial Group – In addition to being an astute business person, Doug is a dedicated supporter <strong>of</strong> many<br />
community initiatives. Cops for Cancer, Festival <strong>of</strong> Trees, Lions Christmas Hamper, and the Huntington Society have all benefited<br />
from his involvement. He was a mainstay <strong>of</strong> the BEL Rotary Polar Plunge, with a 25 year plunging record and well over $100,000<br />
being raised. 2012 marked the 50th anniversary <strong>of</strong> the family business, Chemong Lodge, which in itself is a remarkable feat<br />
deserving <strong>of</strong> recognition.<br />

Sponsored by Sunshrine Day Spa & Salon – An aging department store was entirely renovated producing “a little piece <strong>of</strong><br />
New York” on Lakefield’s main street. Work included new plumbing, electrical, drywall, flooring and ventilation. Frosted window<br />
graphics, lush planters and a new reception area design has maintained the upscale atmosphere. The result is a destination space<br />
that attracts clients from a wide geographic area.<br />

Together they create a friendly, open and warm environment ensuring that everyone feels comfortable.” Music is tailored to the<br />
customer’s preference, their TV channel awaits, their workout programs are out and machines are set up. “Service excellence is<br />

Entrepreneur Innovation – Nightingale Home Maintenance<br />
Sponsored by Darling Insurance – Clients were asking Nightingale Nursing’s home support workers if they knew anyone<br />
who could complete home maintenance odd jobs – simple renovations, repairs and removals. Seeing this need, Nightingale – a<br />
trusted advocate – established a Home Safety & Maintenance Division. Due to requests, they expanded services to the general<br />
public resulting in a 125% growth <strong>of</strong> their client base.<br />
Young Pr<strong>of</strong>essional – David Wilson, Let’s Get Digital<br />
Sponsored by Peterborough Community Futures Development Corp. – Diagnosed as a child with a rare and debilitating<br />
form <strong>of</strong> arthritis, David persevered. At 17 he became a certified technician in advanced digital information systems s<strong>of</strong>tware.<br />
He designed the “Kiosk Control Centre” preventing unauthorized access and hijacking <strong>of</strong> kiosks and information panels. The<br />
“Heartbeat System” cost effectively alerts the control server <strong>of</strong> issues. At 19 he has over 100 clients, country-wide.<br />
Outstanding Business Achievement – Hendren Funeral Homes<br />
Sponsored by County <strong>of</strong> Peterborough – “A high standard <strong>of</strong> excellence was always evident at Hendren Funeral Homes,”<br />
says their nominator. Expansion includes purchasing the Norwood Funeral Home and opening a Bridgenorth <strong>of</strong>fice for cremation<br />
services. Surrounding the business with caring and compassionate people has made the difference, allowing them to increase<br />
market share and family satisfaction.<br />
Retailer <strong>of</strong> the Year – the chocolate rabbit<br />
Sponsored by Nexicom Inc. Presented in memory <strong>of</strong> Brian Holmes, Lockside Trading. – Their nominator says, “the<br />
chocolate rabbit <strong>of</strong>fers an incredible level <strong>of</strong> customer service, shows awareness <strong>of</strong> their clients’ needs and has a wide array <strong>of</strong><br />
products.” Chocolate is produced daily and contains no chemicals, preservatives or artificial ingredients. Custom blend tea is<br />
served in their lounge. They have experienced annual sales growth <strong>of</strong> 20% in each <strong>of</strong> their six years.<br />
Tourism/Hospitality – Indian River Reptile Zoo<br />
Sponsored by Celtic Connection – This registered charity needed to raise funds to build a new pond for three salt water<br />
crocodiles. They leased a number <strong>of</strong> life-sized animatronic dinosaurs for the summer. Linking extinct dinosaurs to live reptiles was<br />
a first for Canada. “Dinosaurs Live!” resulted in a 200% increase in visitors, from around the world to locals who had driven past<br />
for years, but never stopped in.<br />
Volunteerism – Peggy Jewell<br />
Sponsored by Nightingale Nursing Registry. Presented in memory <strong>of</strong> Mary Barrow. – Decades <strong>of</strong> volunteering include<br />
church initiatives and preparing meals for Habitat for Humanity. When the Lakefield Private Hospital was slated for closure the<br />
intent was to move the residents to other facilities throughout the region until Extendicare could be built.<br />
Peggy and others spearheaded a successful, yearlong campaign to keep the hospital open until the new facility was built.<br />
“Being a voice for those who can’t speak for themselves,” is her guiding mantra.<br />
