Continuing Education offers a wide variety of courses to help you

skilled drivers of taxicabs and for hire vehicles licensed by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission. The 

Procurement Technical Assistance Center has helped over 200 small businesses receive more than $60 

million from various governmental agencies. And each year hundreds of teenagers are better prepared 

for Regents Exams, the SAT, and other academic challenges after taking a course in our Teen Academy.

Discover Queens! 

This fall, “Discover Queens” by enjoying some of our most popular attractions. 

Start out in Long Island City at the Museum of African Art Store (exhibitions 

are currently off-site) and peruse beautiful handmade contemporary African art 

and crafts. Next, head over to Astoria and experience Czech and Slovak 

culture, music, food and beer at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden. Events 

and dining take place both indoors and outdoors, 

including live music and family style picnic tables, under 

shady trees. Do some shopping—and more eating—in 

Jackson Heights’ Indian and South Asian neighborhood, 

where you’ll find typical clothing, jewelry, music, movies and authentic cuisine from this region of 

the world, right here in our borough. 

Take a short subway ride on the #7 train to Flushing Meadows Park and visit the Unisphere, 

a 450-ton steel globe created for the 1964-65 World’s Fair. Go for a bike ride, take a walk, or 

have a picnic—the park is open to all who want to enjoy some sunshine and fresh autumn 

air. Stop by the Queens Museum of Art, also located in the park, which features the 

Panorama of New York City, an impressively large and detailed diorama of all five boroughs.

teaches courses at CUNY. He has led 

walking tours in New York City for 

three decades, with expertise in 

historical geography and ethnic and 

technological change. 

Queen's Latin Quarter Under the #7 Train 

The #7 Train, also known as the "International Express," runs through 

neighborhoods of intense immigration. In Corona and Jackson 

Heights, immigrants are predominantly from Latin America and have 

transformed Roosevelt Avenue under the “El” (elevated train) into 

their commercial mecca. We'll navigate these shops and also take a 

walk on nearby streets to see new and old churches, the (former) 

Tiffany Studios, and the planned garden apartments in Jackson 

Heights. Participants should meet in the triangle on the south side 

of the 103 Street station (Corona Plaza). The tour ends at 74th Street 

(E,F,G,R). Note: street parking is almost nonexistent at either end; 

scarce private lots.

Long Island City is acquiring many new attractions, including a sandy 

beach operated by NY Water Taxi. Highlights of this walk are the

row, and Gantry Park's splendid waterfront panorama. The tour will 

begin at "Vernon Mall," extending south from Dorian's Cafe at #7

activities; and initiatives with 

local dentists and a physician to get

CUNY campus. Students must be nominated by their teacher. Two students from LaGuardia’s Adult Learning Center were recipients 

of the scholarship award this year. 

“I entered LaGuardia’s Adult Learning Center 

in 2005. I wanted to earn my GED so that I could 

enroll in a nursing program. Along the way to 

receiving my GED, I won the CUNY Peter Jennings

CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States today, helping

largest, most comprehensive model post-secondary 

program for deaf and hard of hearing students in 

the New York City area. Course areas offered under 

Continuing Education include Academic Studies for

Interpreter Education Projects include two programs: 

1. The American Sign Language (ASL)-English 

Interpretation Program and

1. The American Sign Language (ASL)-English 

Interpretation Program is a rigorous two-year 

academic curriculum, which incorporates national 

interpreter education standards recommended by 

the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT). You can 

earn a BA degree or Professional Certificate in ASL- 

English Interpretation. This is a highly selective 

program. Applications are accepted once a year, 

in the spring before the academic year begins in

Introduction to the Field 

of Interpreting (Seminar) 

This course is an introduction to the field of American

topics concerning the role, function, and skills

Throughout Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a sacred 

holiday that celebrates the spirits of departed loved 

ones. The shrine, or ofrenda, is one of the main 

highlights of the event. You will have the opportunity 

to create a personalized shrine for a departed loved 

one, as well as learn some of the customs and 

traditions related to the Day of the Dead. No previous

desire to honor the dead by creating from your

Come join our Teen Academy. This Saturday 

program offers courses for middle school, junior and 

high school students. Classes help you strengthen 

reading, writing and math skills, and prepare you for 

NYS ELA and Mathematics exams, Regents and SAT 

exams. Our popular college prep workshops for you 

and your family cover everything you need to know 

in order to apply to college—including how to get 

financial aid. But it’s not all work and no play—in 

the Arts Zone you get to develop your creative 

side. Take an art and design course or one in 

architecture. Why not try cartooning or painting? 

You could learn to play acoustic guitar or electronic 

keyboards. You can even develop your culinary 

talents in Cooking with Brigitte, and there’s lots 

more to check out in the Arts Zone. 

Teen Academy classes are offered in three 2-hour 

blocks: 9-11 am; 11:15 am- 1:15 pm, and 1:30-3:30 

pm. Our fall program begins Saturday, October 13 

and ends Saturday, December 8. Saturday, November 

24 is a program holiday. Our classes are eight weeks 

in length, except our 12-week Regents Prep program

Our Mommy and Me program is a delighful 

introduction to pre-school learning with mommy, 

daddy, or caregiver. These classes stimulate your 

child’s intellectual development, expand fine-and 

gross-motor skills, and provide endless opportunities 

for emotional and social development. Children and 

parents laugh, love, and learn together! 


Learn sign language through songs and musical play 

with other families. Whether you intend to incorporate 

sign language into your life long term, or 

simply during this pre-verbal/verbal development 

stage, watch in awe as your baby discovers the world

“I began taking reading classes in College 

for Children when I was 8 years old. When 

I was old enough, I started working there 

as an intern with LaGuardia’s Summer 

Youth Employment Program. Today I’m 

22 and have been working at College for 

Children for 5 years as an office and 

teacher assistant. I also work in the 

college’s Summer Intensive English 

Language Program, an ESL program for 

youth entering high school, and I tutor at 

the Boys Club of New York in Flushing. 

I’m finishing my undergraduate studies 

at Queens College this fall, with a major 

in English and a minor in Secondary 

Education, and I hope to become a high 

school English teacher. Attending 

LaGuardia at an early age was a good 

experience for me. It helped me to obtain

Cooking with Brigitte/Part II 

(Ages 8, 9 & 10) 

Culinary wizardry isn’t just for adults! In Part II you’ll 

learn how to bake, and at the same time you’ll learn 

about nutrition, improve your math skills and gain 

confidence in the kitchen. Next is dessert – white, 

yellow or chocolate cupcakes with buttercream or 

chocolate ganach frosting, and ice cream cone 

cupcakes. In the final class you’ll make tons of 

cookies – chocolate chip, thumbprint, butter, and 

oatmeal raisin.

Tuition Fees and Discounts 

A non-refundable registration fee of $12 is required for all courses except the intensive 

English as a Second Language program, for which a $25 registration fee is required. 

LaGuardia Community College alumni, faculty and staff, senior citizens, and PA recipients 

may receive discounts for courses on a space available basis. Discounts become available 

three working days prior to start of the selected course. Call (718) 482-7244 for more

Some courses are exempt from discounts or waivers. These are coded ND after the tuition 

costs. 

Classroom Assignments 

Classroom assignments are posted outside the Registration Office, M141, Main Building, 

prior to the first day of class. College for Children posts room assignments outside MB04 

and The English Language Center posts its classroom assignments outside C354. 

Refund Information 

Refunds (minus registration fee) are issued if a signed written request is received according 

to the following schedule: 

100% if received 3 days prior to the first class. 

50% if received prior to the second week of classes. 

NO refunds for courses that meet for one or two sessions. 

For courses $299 and above or more than 50 hours of instructional time, the following 

schedule applies: 

100% if received 3 business days prior to the first day of class 

75% if received prior to completion of 10% of class hours. 

50% if received prior to completion of 20% of class hours. 

In all cases refunds are minus the registration fee. If you request a refund by mail, the 

postmark will serve as the date of the request or you can fax to (718) 609-2074. It takes 

approximately 4 to 6 weeks to process your refund. 

Members of the military needing to withdraw from class at short notice will be considered 

on a case-by-case basis. 

Financial Assistance 

Many employers and/or unions provide tuition reimbursement or direct funding. Members
