What is a <strong>Healthy</strong> School?<br />

To become a healthy school, schools need to evidence<br />

how they meet criteria in four core themes that<br />

make up national <strong>Healthy</strong> School status.<br />

• Physical Activity<br />

• <strong>Healthy</strong> Eating<br />

• Emotional Health & wellbeing<br />

• PSHE


Related National Indicators<br />

• no longer a direct indicator but a key<br />

delivery vehicle for some key<br />

outcomes for children and young<br />

people<br />

• a framework in which health<br />

outcomes for children and young<br />

person can be achieved

<strong>Healthy</strong> Eating<br />

‘Pupils have the confidence, skills and<br />

understanding to make healthy food<br />

choices. <strong>Healthy</strong> and nutritious food and<br />

drink is available across the school day.’


Evidence must show…<br />

• member of the senior management team to<br />

oversee all aspects of food<br />

• training in practical food education for<br />

staff<br />

• a whole-school food policy<br />

• a welcoming eating environment<br />

• healthier food and drink options are<br />

available and promoted


• has meals, vending machines and tuck shop<br />

facilities that are nutritious and healthy<br />

• monitors menus and choices to inform<br />

policy and provision<br />

• opportunities to learn about different<br />

types of food<br />

• easy access to free, clean and palatable<br />

drinking<br />

• consults pupils about food choices


Physical Activity<br />

‘Pupils are provided with a range of<br />

opportunities to be physically active.<br />

They understand how physical activity<br />

can help them to be more healthy, and<br />

how physical activity can improve and<br />

be a part of everyday life.’


Evidence must show…<br />

• clear leadership and management to<br />

develop & monitor physical activity policy<br />

• a whole-school physical activity policy<br />

• a minimum two hours of structured physical<br />

activity each week<br />

• opportunities to participate in a broad<br />

range of extracurricular activities<br />

• consults on activities offered, identifies<br />

barriers to participation and seeks to<br />

remove them


• involves schools sports co-ordinators ordinators &<br />

other community resources<br />

• encourages pupils, parents/carers & staff<br />

to walk or cycle<br />

• gives parents/carers opportunities to be<br />

involved<br />

• ensures is appropriate training<br />

• encourages staff to undertake physical<br />

activity


The Self Validation Process<br />

• enters information on the on-line audit<br />

• check all boxes & record evidence<br />

• two outcomes for each key theme<br />

• submission goes to local Quality Assurance<br />
