THE HILTON CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
Class of 2010 Commencement
“Gasp! We're seniors!”
Spirits were high and the sunny weather cooperated for the 373
members of the Class of 2010 who participated in the 111th Hilton
High School Commencement, Saturday, June 26, in the newly-renovated
Eastman Theater. Several speakers and music provided by the
Hilton HS Chorale and Brass Ensemble were on the program.
“Memories are irreplaceable”
Class President Sabrina Kristobak exhorted classmates to “Always
remember the people who shaped our lives.” Quoting Katie Shirley,
one of the Fairport cheerleaders who lost her life in 2007 in a tragic
car crash, “It's through our lives and struggles we learn who we are.
Memories are irreplaceable. . . . Always remember the people who
shaped our lives.”
“Spend your life discovering what you're meant to be”
Class Valedictorian Gabrielle Price spoke to graduates of the
importance of “Paying attention to what puts you in the zone. Will
you spend your life discovering what you're meant to be . . . bringing
your gifts to the table? What is significant is the character you create
for yourself – how do you handle changes, set-backs and comebacks?
The truth is, sometimes you will fall short. There is no effort without
shortcoming. If you fail, fail daring greatly.”
“The journey can take many different forms”
Salutatorian Stephanie Summa remarked on the class as a whole,
“We did not take things for granted as we struggled through the death
of a classmate,” referring to the sudden death of Christopher Cervini
this year.
“Life is amazing”
Hilton High School Social Studies Teacher Matt D'Augustine gave
the commencement address telling graduates, “You never really know
what life has in store for you. Even things that are distracting can make
all the difference. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look
around, you could miss it.”
“It's courage that counts”
Principal Brian Bartalo spoke to graduates of the inspiration of
teachers. “Exceed expectations and not just accept the norm,” he said.
“It's courage that counts. Have passion, have desire, have courage.”
Let me help you Heather Lowry helps Alana Slocum get ready for Commencement Ceremonies
Hilton Central School District
Superintendent Dimbleby . . .
Maximizing the Potential of the Individual Learner
Dear Hilton District Resident,
The months of May and June are busy time periods
both in the school district and for our students
and their families. With the onset of spring
then summer, there is work to be done both
inside and outside of our schools. We presented
a school budget to the community for your approval
in May. At the same time, we prepared for
the end of school by administering summative
examinations, commencement for our graduates
and recognized student achievement and scholarship
as well as engaged in other traditional school
closing activities. This issue of the Insight highlights
the results of many of these events.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
you for voting on the school budget in May and
for supporting your schools by approving the
budget. It was a challenging budget in difficult
economic times.
We will continue to work diligently to build
upon the high level of success this district has
achieved in a fiscally efficient manner by maintaining
high standards at a cost among the lowest in
the county.
Your continued support
of the children
in our community
contributes to the
overall success we
have achieved as a
district. Our graduates
continue to meet and
exceed state standards
at an unparalleled rate
as previous and recent
data attests. We are
proud of the fact
Hilton High School
has been again named Superintendent
to Newsweek’s list of David Dimbleby
top high schools in the
nation and that Merton Williams is one of only 16
middle schools in New York State to be named to
the prestigious national Schools to Watch list this
spring.
Just as important, we continue to raise caring,
respectful young adults and citizens who bring
pride to the local and larger community as
reflected in the level of achievements our
students attained in music, art, athletics and
academics this past year.
As a learning community, there continues
to be work to be done at our schools in
order to maximize the potential of each
learner. We have created a tradition of high
expectations and excellence. At the same
time we must continue to find ways to challenge
ourselves to improve in order to prepare
our students for the societal demands
each will face in the future.
I am confident that with your support our
children will continue to thrive and contribute
positively to the vibrant school and local community
here in the Hilton Central School District and
beyond.
Wishing you all the best this summer,
Dave Dimbleby
Superintendent of Schools
Hilton HS on Newsweek List of Top Schools
For the sixth year in a row, Hilton High School
has been recognized by Newsweek magazine in its
annual “America’s Top High Schools” issue announced
High School Principal Brian Bartalo. The
list ranks the top 1,200 U.S. high schools, which
represents less than 6% of all high schools in the
country. Each year, Newsweek magazine picks the
best high schools in the country based on how
hard school staffs work to challenge students with
advanced-placement college-level courses and
tests. Just over 1,600 schools—only 6 percent of
all the public schools in the U.S.—made the list.
In 2010 Hilton High School ranked 1,208; in
2009 Hilton High School ranked 1,030; in 2008
HHS ranked 933, the first time that Hilton High
School broke top 1,000 [previous years’ scores
include 1,188, 1,074, and 1,036].
“We’re very proud at Hilton High School of this
annual recognition from Newsweek,” said Principal
Bartalo. “We have hard working students and staff
to thank for being on this list. We will continue to
strive to have more students in the future challenge
themselves with rigorous courses at our
school to better prepare for their post-secondary
pursuits.” The Newsweek rankings are based on
a formula that divides the number of AP, IB and
Cambridge exams given at each school by that
school’s number of graduating seniors.
Hilton Central School District
2010-11 Budget
approved by voters
Hilton CSD residents voted May 18, 2010 on
the proposed 2010-11 budget and a bus purchase
proposition. The budget passed by a vote of
1,322-842. The bus proposition passed by a vote of
1,188-934. In an uncontested race, three Board of
Education incumbents were returned to the Board:
Michelle Frechette Ames for a third term with
1,548 votes; Steve Beauvais for a fourth term with
1,514 votes; and Barbara Cutrona for a fourth term
with 1,484 votes.
Faced with a possible $3.2 million cut in state aid
as proposed by the Governor’s budget, the Hilton
Central Board of Education adopted a budget that
was virtually frozen at the current year level at
their April 13, 2010 meeting.
Following a six-month budget development
process involving more than 100 staff, parents and
community members, the $68,631,794 proposal is
0.17% over the current year’s budget, a $115,000
increase. In an effort to absorb the potential state
aid loss, the proposal includes staff reductions; concessions
from the administrators and the administrative
bargaining unit; and a $1.9 million transfer
from fund balance and reserves.
Restored to the budget from an earlier proposal
was the Crimson Cadet Marching Band with
participation critera. Further details about the
2010-11 Budget, projected tax rates and other
details are online at www.hilton.k12.ny.us/budgetprofile.htm
The Board of Education approves the tax rates
in August and result will be posted on the District
website: www.hilton.k12.ny.us
Parents and interested community members are
encouraged to get involved in the budget development
process. Thirteen Budget Committees will
begin meeting in the fall.
Budget committees employ close scrutiny of
each school and department budget items yielding
important information about containing costs and
effectively providing education to Hilton students.
If you are interested in serving on a budget committee,
please call the Business Office at 585-392-
The Hilton Central School District has been again
named one of the nation’s “Best Communities for Music
Education” by NAMM Foundation. The California-based
NAMM Foundation announced May 5, 2010 the results
of its 11th annual “Best Communities for Music Education”
survey which acknowledges schools and districts
across the U.S. for their commitment to and support of
music education in schools.
For the second time and two years, Hilton has received
the recognition said Hilton CSD Music K-12 Program
Coordinator Nancy Russo. Only 174 school
communities in the nation were recognized in 2010
and Hilton CSD is one of five districts in Monroe
County.
The districts were selected on the basis of a survey
which measured curricular and programmatic
criteria as well as public support of music programs
which was administered by the Institute for Educational
Research and Public Service, an affiliate of the
University of Kansas.
math and science.”
Modeled after the Athena Award, the recognition
honors the next generation of women leaders.
The Young Women of Distinction Award recognized
four high school seniors who demonstrate excellence
in academics, community service and leadership.
Recipients received a cash scholarship and a
paid internship with a local company. All nominees
are eligible to apply for paid internships at a local
company.
According to the Women’s Council, “As women
have worked to become an integral part of the business
and political community in the United States,
it has been very important to recognize and inspire
young women. As Women’s Council extends its
reach to these young women through ongoing mentor
relationships, the Council encourages them to
return to our community after college and make a
difference in the business sector.”
