DIARY DATES
Let me paint you a picture ... I’m
dining in a Nepalese restaurant in
Melbourne, devouring item number
32 on the menu; ‘khasiko masu’. The
dish comprises of diced goat cooked in
a traditional Nepalese style sauce. The
cuisine and dish are uncharacteristic
selections for me, however the motive
behind my choice is simple; Master Chef
(MC)! You see, the contestants on MC
cooked with goat in one of their invention
tests and it got me ‘curious’. So, in this
case curiosity got the ‘goat’ not the ‘cat’!
By and large the effects of MC have had
an enormous impact on our society. It’s
led many to cook and experiment with new
ingredients. It’s brought ‘gourmet’ back
into the suburban home. For those of us
who don’t like to ‘cook’ but like to ‘eat’, it’s
steered us to restaurants in search of novel
foods. It has brought family and friends together
through dinner parties, husband and
wife cook-off’s and mother and daughter
baking sessions - just like the good old
days of the Margaret Fulton cook books -
well so they tell me anyway!
The program has also been a keen discussion
topic amongst the staff. It has also
been quite the ‘inspiration’ to those in
the kitchen who have been ‘stirred-on’ to
perfect their craft, keen to ‘spice-it-up’ and
most importantly ‘blend’ and ‘mix’ together
like a unified team of Master Chef’s .....

It would be remiss to write about MC
without mentioning the fabulous debonair
judge in ‘Matt Preston’. He who combines
culinary articulation with fashion flair of
cravats, preppy jackets and trainers (i think
he is fantastic). Here at the Club we have
an uncanny resemblance to Matt’s suave
charisma, if you flick to page four you will
find out all about him.

It’s been an exciting couple of months
at both Clubs. Elvis raised from the dead
to entertain at Club Ringwood, Kerry
and Sharon trotted off to Bali in search
of the ‘answer’ (but didn’t find it), Justin
performed a perfect ten in his beer, wine
and food expo-dition, the Club bus went in
for a service and came out with a Jenny
Craig rear, Emma was asked a question
only to giggle in reply, Annette flooded
back to reception - much like the bombers
of yesteryear, Mr Magic appeared here,
there and everywhere, Ryan steered his
ship and ended up at Club Ringwood, Jack
enjoyed another roast thanks to his Club
loyalty points, the R&R kiosks got ‘swiped’
so many times that the Marketing Manager
had to check and double check the swipe
count (all good says the Captain), Club
Ringwood introduced a new ramp for
improved ‘access’ and Brad yet again got
the footy quad! Good on YOU!
As we move to the present we have plenty
happening here at the Clubs. Cheer on
your favourite sports stars or teams as
Fox Sports telecasts live from all around
the world. And if you’re not into your
sports, what about a “feel-good trilogy
of epic proportions?” Fortunately for you
I’m not talking about Indiana Jones. It’s
Tabaret’s third dream home in three years
and by simply spending $20 at the Clubs
in August you could be a winner! Be sure
to get that ‘peel’n reveal’, it could be YOU!
The psychic’s are back in August, the
Poker season is hotting up and of course
Father’s Day is around the corner.
As we sit on the threshold of that much
anticipated day in September, I wouldn’t
be ‘one eyed’ if I didn’t mention those
‘Mighty Pies’. So, for those of you that say
I ‘give you nothing’, here it is... a blithe
prophesy... Collingwood for premiers in
2009! Perhaps this could also earn you a
few dollars, so ‘get on them’ nice and early
ladies and gentleman as you won’t be getting
sixes in early September!

TAB TALK
As the Legend Punters Club draws to a close on the 15th of August,
we have seen another successful competition run by the lovely
ladies in the TAB. Seventy-two people enjoyed the thrills and wins of
their fellow punters over the last three months, with a decent pay day
coming very soon.
Our much anticipated spring racing punters club - CK Spring Club
kicks off on the 3rd of October, with the cut off day for registration
being the 1st of October. No late entries will be accepted and the
cost to ‘play’ is $100. The fee will include ten meetings over the
carnvial. “Be sure to get in early and register in the TAB today”.
The TAB is open 7 days from 10am daily (9am on Saturday).
BLOOMSDAY REVIEW
A fantastic day was had by all at our Bloomsday event on Sunday
14th of June. The event is a commemoration usually held on the
16th of June in Dublin to celebrate the life of Irish writer James Joyce
and relives the events in his novel Ulysses. It is also a perfect excuse
for a pint in other parts of the world such as ours! The band for the
event was ‘Tara’, who put on a great show along with traditional
Irish dancers. With the day receiving enormous feedback from our
members ‘Tara’ will be back for a Sunday Session in August or
September, so stay tuned! A big thanks to the Fitzsimons family for
assisting in the organisation of such a successful and joyous day.
GUEST BEER
Carlsberg which is said to be ‘the best lager in the world’ is our guest
beer on tap in the members lounge this month. We continue to rotate
our guest beers through the lines to ensure our members and guests
try something off the beaten track every now and then!

THE TALES
OF TOM ...
If you haven’t let Tom mix or
pour you a drink, then he will
say you haven’t lived yet. Tom is
an idol at Club Kilsyth, well so
he thinks. No seriously though,
Tom is one of the club’s most
popular barmen who not only
cuts it up behind the bar, but
oozes skill, enthusiasm and
suaveness. Meet Tom ....
Working behind the bar has given
me an amazing ability to stay on my
feet for extended periods of time. It
has also allowed me to appreciate
quality service - which of course I
provide!
The most enjoyable part of my job
is the people I get to work with and
the fantastic group of regulars who
come into the members lounge. Oh,
and seeing Amanda’s face when I
come to work!
The funniest thing that has happened
since working at the Club is
trying to shoot a cork at Brayden,
resulting in him wearing half a bottle
of Lindeman’s Brut (shhh ... don’t tell
Justin the stock control guru).
My favourite beverage to mix is
quite complex it starts with a tumbler
glass, add a little ice, 30ml bundy
rum and top it off with coca cola
- Voi·là!
If i could invite three guests to
dinner it would be Arj Barker, for
his mellow atmosphere, Richard
Branson, to assist me in making
a few extra bucks on the side and
Lucas Unland (CK co-worker) so he
can clarify to everyone that I was
in fact telling the truth about all that
transpired at this dinner!
My favourite quote would have to
be; “It doesn’t matter how slow you
go, as long as you do not stop” -
well so say’s confucius anyway!

BRAD’S BLOG
Welcome again to what is becoming an ever increasing popular
part of the Club News, Brad’s Blog. It seems when people pick
up the Club News, just like the sports section of the newspaper,
everyone turns straight to this page to check out the valuable
contents inside. Well be sure to read on as hidden in this blog
is an offer that is far too good to miss. But before we get to this
fabulous offer, let me tell you a little about what’s happening down
at Club Ringwood.
Recently we’ve had a visit from our long lost friend Elvis. Yes, that’s
right ‘Elvis’ was here at the Club in June! He sang and danced up a
storm. In what was a very successful night, Elvis entertained more
than 150 of our members, guests and visitors. With table service
being on trial, this was a well received ‘treat’ to our customers,
with many people commenting on how great it was to have such
exceptional service. Such was the success of the table service,
many members and guests have suggested this type of night be a
more permanent fixture in the Club entertainment guide. So, keep
your eyes peeled for our next show, as they will only get bigger and
better from here.
Now, because you hear it here first, just like Elvis, Poker, and even
the renovations such as the new ramp (which I hope you have
all tried out), I thought I might mention that now is the time to be
thinking of booking for Fathers Day. This is one of the big days on
the calendar for the Club, and I’m sure that it will be a great success
yet again. Be sure to book in early, as last year breakfast and lunch
were booked out well before the date. What is the date you may
ask? Well even though I am not a father myself, I still know the date
quite well as we all have fathers, and I think mine is the best, that’s
how I remember. So pencil in your diary Sunday 6th September to
take your ‘dad’ out for what will be a great time for breakfast, lunch
or dinner here at the Club. Ensure you book in at reception (9879
8733) and either say au revoir to Natalie, who is leaving us to take
up the family life or a big welcome to Grace who will be joining our
illustrious team.
We have quite a good following of support for the AFL shown live
here at the Club. We seem to have a loyal following of both Hawthorn
and St Kilda fans and the atmosphere here is ‘smokin’. However
I would like to see more of us Tiger supporters here when we are
playing, c’mon guys its still mathematically possible isn’t it?
Have you seen ‘Big Tony’ in the corner of the Sports Lounge? If not
go and check him out. Big Tony is an electronic poker game where
you can test and hone your poker skills with the best. Speaking of
poker, our freeroll poker is still going strong every Thursday evening
whilst our ‘new’ cash buy in game held on Sunday has also been
well received with the numbers increasing from week to week.There
is a great opportunity for you to go home with the big prize, only
recently a $500 card was won by one lucky or should I say astute
punter.
So now you ask, where is that offer that you mentioned earlier? Well
here it is; come and see me on any Friday in August or September,
and tell me who you think will win the AFL Grand Final and I’ll shout
you a drink (beer wine or soft drink of course, I’m not made of
money). But be prepared for some backlash because I may not agree
with you and point out just where it is you have made your error.

G’day ! I’m the Social ‘Barfly’. No one ever can
see me, but mark my words I see and hear
everything that goes on at Club Ringwood.
From the distinctive Jimmy Prangley laugh after
one of his prize winning one liners, to the stories
that Pauly Duffner seems to come up with each
and every day. There are always new things happening
around here, for instance did you know
that we have a Magician named ‘The Great Who
Ton’ who wanders around the bistro mystifying us with his tricks
from 6pm till 8pm every Wednesday night? The Members Barfly
from Kilsyth tells me he is over there on Tuesday nights also.
I would like to wish our Natalie, from reception all the very best as
she embarks on the wonderfully challenging voyage of motherhood.
We will miss you Nat and hope to see you around from time to time.
I’d also like to introduce FATYAK to our family of tap beers, who has
been received quite well by our punters. For only $5.50 you can
enjoy a schooner of this liquid gold.
On the bistro front, I’ve noticed that more and more of you are
getting ‘involved’ in the premium wines from our Wine Vault. Let
me give you the ‘heads up’ for your next visit, you can now enjoy
your fine drop in the finest ‘Rydell’ glassware. Now that is impressive
- even for a fly! Don’t forget to keep an eye out for me as I buzz
around the venue and I’ll be sure to update you on the happenings of

MacMillan selected in Australian
University Team
Kilsyth Cobra Auryn MacMillan, who is currently on scholarship at
Gardner Webb University in America, represented Australia at the
World University Games from July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. Club
Kilsyth assisted Auryn with a contribution to the cost of the trip.
MacMillan represented the Phil Munday’s Junior Cobras before
taking up a scholarship at Gardner Webb University in 2006 and
has kept in shape with the Cobras during each of his off seasons.
MacMillan was part of the Gardner Webb team that beat Kentucky
in 2007 in one of the biggest upsets in US College history. The
win received International coverage with MacMillan interviewed
on SEN Radio. Averaging 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in 2008-09
MacMillan finished with career highs in almost all categories on
his team that went 13-17 for a 5th place finish.
MacMillan travelled to Belgrade,
Serbia with the Australian University
team coached by former NBL
Assistant Coach Brett Coxsedge.
Auryn will return to Gardner Webb
for his Senior year at the conclusion
of the Games before suiting up with
Kilsyth in the SEABL in 2010. Despite
high expectations the men struggled
throughout the tournament finishing at
the lower end of the draw. The end
Cameron Johnson accepts scholarship to Viterbo University
Kilsyth Workforce Cobras D League player Cameron Johnson has
accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Viterbo in the
United States. Viterbo is located in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
“I am really excited about the chance to play college basketball in
the States as it has been something I have wanted to do,” stated
Johnson. “Having current and former teammates now playing in the
States, we hear a lot about college basketball. It will be great to play
the game and get an education at the same time. I am really looking
forward to being a part of Viterbo University.” The end

COMMUNITY NEWS
In June we had a surprise visit from Kathleen O’Kelly Kennedy
who was back in Australia to visit her family for two weeks.
In 2005 Kathleen was offered a scholarship to a university in
USA in recognition of her wheelchair basketball skills. Kathleen
approached Club Kilsyth for sponsorship to assist with the costs
of relocating to the USA and other costs incurred for settling into
her new life. We were happy to assist Kathleen with a $10,000.00
donation to help her on her way.
Since then Kathleen has been developing her skills and was
selected to play for Australia in the Beijing Paralympic Games in
2008. Kathleen was very generous in donating a ‘freshly’ signed
singlet she wore in Beijing to us in recognition of our support.
Kathleen is continuing with her studies and now has her eyes set
on the London Games in 2012. We wish Kathleen all the best and
look forward to watching her progress. The end

NATHAN’S SPORTSPICK REPORT
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are over halfway through our tipping
competition, and it’s still a very closely fought battle. By the
end of round 15 we have 35 people within 5 points of the overall
competition leader Rohan J. Schulties. With things this tight
I’m sure it will be a hard fought battle right to the end.
Between the two Clubs, Club Ringwood has had a disappointing
start to the season with 8 of the Top 10 Tippers representing Club
Kilsyth, and of the Top 50 Club Ringwood only has 11 members.
That said, it’s not time to panic and fire the coach like we have
already seen twice this season. We are simply ensuring that
we don’t peak too early. I have no doubt that we here at Club
Ringwood can go hard at the footy for the remainder of the season
and if we take it one week at a time you’re sure to see more of us
make the eight come September.
As a former representative of Club Kilsyth it’s good to see Taylor
Mosdall doing well this year. He has been on fire since the split
round and now sits equal second. He has obviously stopped taking
tipping advice from his father Jim!!
Also on equal second is Peter Wishart, Club Ringwoods great
white hope. Peter has been very consistent and remained in the
top ten the last 6 rounds. Many thought his wife Marie could be
a serious contender this year given that she apparently gets the
inside information from one of Richmond’s finest (is that a contradiction
in terms, sorry Brad I had to!!). Maybe Marie should be
looking over Peter’s shoulder instead.
Now Brad knows his footy and was talking himself up rather hard
early on in the competition, but he has found it hard to find the footy
recently, and this form slump has seen him slip to number 65 in the
ranking. Much to the delight of Karina and Nathan who have a weekly
meeting on how best to take down the big fella.
Please remember all Sportspick 09 Footy Tippers, you are also invited
to a Brownlow Medal Night function at Club Kilsyth. It promises
to be a great opportunity to catch up with the members you have
been battling with all season. Also one lucky Footy Tipper will be
taking home a brand spanking new 50” High Definition TV. It will be
perfect to watch the Grand Final, so I will expect that the winner to
invite me to their Grand Final Day BBQ!!

FIVE MINUTES WITH ... BEN HUTTON ‘MR MAGIC’
How did you get into magic? I first became interested in magic at the age of eleven. My grandmother
took me to see silver’s grand magic circus. The ringmaster was a magician by the name of Ross
Skiffington, one of our country’s finest illusionists. It was the greatest show on earth. I was so
amazed. I knew then, that this was what I wanted to do, everyday, for the rest of my life. I spent
the rest of my formative years learning card tricks at the back of the classroom and searching for
dusty conjuring books on forgotten bookshelves. I was lucky to find a mentor, and I helped him
backstage with his shows. This was in the time before the internet of course. Things have really
changed since then. It is easier to learn these days and magic has quantum leaped as a result.
What is your favourite magic trick right now? It changes every day. I love slight of hand and
I love using misdirection. I love tricks that contain a certain elegance both in their outward
appearance and in their inner workings. I learn new magic all the time, but only the effects that
fit my style will remain in my working repertoire for any length of time. I am rediscovering
card-artistry at present.
You are now featuring your roving act at Club Kilsyth and Club Ringwood, when is this?
I feature every Tuesday at Club Kilsyth and every Wednesday at Club Ringwood from 6pm-
8pm. I am very much looking forward to these nights.
Who do you look up to? Raymond Crowe was my mentor as a young lad, and is one
of the greatest magicians alive. Darren Brown is one the most exciting acts around and
has truly captured the imagination of a generation, blurring the lines between conjuring,
hypnosis and psychological suggestion. When it comes to close-up magic, guys like
Shoot Ogawa and the Buck twins blow my mind. Some guys who I have been really
inspired by from the past are Fred Kaps, Tommy Wonder and Karrel Fox. My favourite
artist is not a magician but a musician, John Frusciante, best known for his guitar
work in the red hot chili peppers. His solo albums are pretty much all I listen to
these days.
What do you love about magic? I love that being a magician has opened so
many doors for me that never would have opened otherwise. I love that I get
to make a living making other people happy. I love that it is both irrelevant and
relevant to your life. I mean its not brain surgery, but at the same time constantly
rediscovering wonder in our lives is very important. Funnily enough, I
dont enjoy fooling people, although this is a great challenge, it’s the sharing of
wonder that I enjoy, it’s not about creating puzzles to try and solve.
Do you have any magic words of wisdom? Always trust your intuition. It is
the closest thing to real magic that we have in our lives, but only if you are
aware and open to it. And you can train it, with constant practice, the same
way you train your muscles at the gym. Have fun with it. The end
REMEMBERING ‘PETE’
On 17th June 2009 Club Ringwood lost a dear friend, Sydney Norman Carey, better known to
us as ‘Pete’. A man of integrity, charm and loyalty, Pete frequented the Club on regular occasions
sharing stories and donating his home grown tomatoes to grateful staff.
Pete had a sense of humour too, happy to tell staff if their undies were hanging out or referring to
them as ‘Babe’ or ‘Love’. He extended that warmth to everyone at the Club. It didn’t matter if Pete
had known you for years or you had just met him. He would say g’day and greet you with his
trademark grin.
He loved fishing with his brother and coming back to the Club to share his adventurous stories.
Another of Pete’s loves was football and he spent many a day watching his beloved Collingwood
in the Club’s Social bar.
Although you are no longer with us you will forever hold a special place in our
heart as your spirit will forever be alive at Club Ringwood. Pete you are sadly missed by all of us.
Rest in peace Pete.

“hello, kitchen” ... what are your thoughts on master chef?
it is a very entertaining
program, you can really
learn a few things
from the classes. in
saying this, it is still
quite different to the
real world of chefing!
it’s a great pathway for
people to get a foot in
the door in regards to
cooking and chefing
but, there is a lot more
to the show than what
we see.
great show. i think it
helps promote our
chefing trade and gives
the public an idea of
how difficult our job
is. it also help’s us
chefs to have more
incentive to learn and
inspires us to be more
imaginative.
i think the show is
outstanding and i have
also learnt a few things
from various chapters.
i particuarly enjoyed
the episode with the
chef from hong kong
who showed us how to
get a nice ‘crispy’ skin
on our roast pork.
it has raised the
profile of cooking, but
increased people’s
expectations of what
to expect when they
go out. i think, for
a while people will
become more critical
of what they receive
when dining out.
