BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 

Some animals are more than meets the eye. In this camp, participants will learn 

why, when it comes to living things, there are just as many reason (if not more) to 

love the beasts and the beauties. From beautiful butterflies and peacocks to beastly 

bearded dragons and bats, we’ll see why looks can be deceiving. By the end, you 

may find that these beasts are beautiful after all. 

6-7 YEAR OLDS

Animals are incredible when faced with danger! Animals have adapted many ways 

to keep themselves safe. They can: blend in, bolt out of sight, or turn and bite! 

Discover the tricky ways animals stay safe. 


NEW & IMPROVED 

DR. ZOOLITTLE’S ANIMAL TRAINING CAMP 

Discover how to “talk” to animals! Campers will be training NEW 

behaviors with a variety of Zoo animals including goats, chickens 

and other birds. Learn about animal behavior and motivation while 

applying training techniques taught by Zoo professionals. By the 

end of camp we will have the animals eating out of our hands, 

literally!

BIRD TREATS 

Feeding birds in the winter can be a treat for them as well as a treat for us as we 

watch them at the feeders! Discover who some of your feathered neighbors are in 

the winter and meet a real bird up close. Then, make a special winter treat for the 

birds, using cereal and popcorn which you can take home!

When it’s cold and dreary outside, kids do not always get the chance to jump and 

dance and sing! The Zoo would like to change that! In collaboration with Miss 

Amanda’s Music Garden, certified early childhood music specialist, Amanda 

O’Bannon, will teach you and your toddler how to move and sing like the plants 

and animals. Zoo educators will also be on hand to bring some special animal visitors 

to visit the classroom!

THE EYES HAVE IT 

Discover what it’s like to see eye to eye with animals. We’ll find out why some 

animals have round, slit-like, or even rectangular pupils and then get a chance to 

see some eyes up close when we meet some animals in the classroom.

ARCTIC ANIMALS 

Enjoy the beginning of the winter season as we learn how animals survive in the 

snow and ice. Dress warm for a hike in the Zoo to visit some of our residents that 

enjoy the cold. We will learn about the adaptations that keep animals protected 

even in the coldest environments and make a “polar bear wreath” that you can take 

home.

FUR, FEATHER, AND SCALES 

Whether it’s a harbor seal, a scarlet macaw, or a fat-tailed gecko, animals are 

covered in a variety of things! From the softest fur to the toughest scales, we’ll 

discover how these coverings help the animals and even have a chance to see what 

a couple animals feel like.

Could you beat an ant in a weightlifting contest or a cheetah in a 50-yard dash? 

Investigate what it takes to be an animal superstar and look for some around the 

Zoo. We’ll test a few of our athletic abilities and see how we measure up with the 

animal world’s best!

MY GROCERY STORE IS A RAINFOREST 

Explore the world of a tropical rainforest as the visit the P&G Discovery Forest! 

We’ll create a grocery list and go a scavenger hunt to find the items, look at the 

ways that they are used and how the rainforest provides a perfect habitat for 

them!

FRIENDS OR ENEMIES? 

The plant and animal world can get pretty complicated when it comes to figuring 

out who gets along with whom. Lions and zebra- maybe not so much. But 

what about sloths and algae? Or acacia trees and ants? Are they friends or 

enemies? Find out the wild an crazy world of symbiosis as we look at who gets 

along and who doesn’t!

DEADLY BEAUTIES 

Deceptively innocent in appearance, some animals can pack a “pretty” deadly 

wallop despite what they look like. Explore the world of some of nature’s 

surprise predators including beaded lizards, poison arrow frogs, black widow 

spiders, and more! You just might be surprised by what you discover.

This program delves deeply into a specific animal, its 

ecology, biology and behavior and will transform interest 

into expertise! 

IN DEPTH: ASIAN ELEPHANTS 

This “In Depth” program will take a look at our most impressive animals at 

the Zoo, the Asian Elephants! Have you ever wondered how people have 

worked with these giants for thousands of years? Or which animal is more 

genetically related to the Asian elephant; the African elephant or the wooly 

mammoth? Join us as we explore the history, biology and behavior of these 

incredible animals.

LET’S PLAY! 

What’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys? Animal enrichment, of course! 

Whether it is a box sprayed with perfume or apples hidden in a pile of mulch, 

keeping the animals at the Zoo entertained can be a creative job. In this class, 

we’ll learn the purpose and process that goes into the creation of enrichment 

items at the Zoo. Then, we’ll make an enrichment treat for some special Zoo 

residents.

BE MINE! 

From gifts of food to elaborate dance routines, animals have 

interesting ways of finding and winning over a mate. With a game, 

animal demos, and a hike around the Zoo, we’ll learn about some of 

the funny and strange things that animals do to win over a prospective partner. .

BACKSTAGE PASS JR 

Is your 12-14 year old looking for a more in-depth, once-in-a-lifetime experience 

at the Zoo? These specially designed classes allow an opportunity for an 

up-close and personal look at some of the places the Zoo animals call home, and 

most even include an encounter with Zoo animals! All participants will receive a 

keepsake backstage pass nametag on a zoo-themed lanyard as a souvenir of their 

adventure. 

Note: Due to the nature of these programs, age limits must be adhered to. In addition, 

due to space restrictions, parents cannot be accommodated in behind-the-scenes areas. 


FEATHERED FRIENDS 

How many fish does a puffin eat for lunch? Where do the Zoo’s lorikeets go in 

the winter? How do you get a job taking care of such cool birds? Get the 

answer to these questions and more when we take a guided behind-thescenes 

look at the Wings of the World bird house. Don’t forget to bring your 

camera!

Garden Programs 

LANDSCAPING FOR THE HOMEOWNER SERIES 

Join us for one of the most informative and complete landscape series for homeowners in the area. If you are planning on garden renovation or a new 

installation in your landscape these classes provide great insight on design, preparation and plant selection with emphasis on plants that do best in the 

Tri-state area. Classes are offered separately but also build upon one another. Take time now to gain the knowledge of soil preparation, maintenance and 

plant selection and you’ll be ready to hit the ground in spring creating a thriving & beautiful garden. 

All classes meet on Wednesdays from 7-9 pm starting January 18 for 10 weeks.

January 18 – Design your own landscape – Part 1 

The focus of this class is the simple steps that every designer takes 

when evaluating a new landscape or renovating an existing landscape. 

Basic design principles will be discussed. 

January 25 – Design Your Own Landscape – Part 2 

This is a more in-depth look at where plants go and why they go there. 

We will discuss the size and scale of the landscape, as well as proper 

bed preparation. 

February 1– Trees in the Landscape 

Choosing the right tree for your landscape can be a costly decision. A 

slide presentation will illustrate the various types of trees that you can 

use. Shade trees, flowering trees, patio trees and evergreen trees will be 

presented. 

February 8 - Shrubs in the Landscape 

View a slide presentation on the best shrubs for Cincinnati area 

landscapes. Whether you have sun or shade, wet soils or dry, this class 

will present the possibilities of shrubs for the home landscape. Special 

emphasis will be on the newest and hardiest varieties for this area. 

February 15 - Annuals: Color in the Landscape 

Have you ever wondered what the secrets are to having lots of color 

in your landscape? Find out what the newest and best annuals are that 

tolerate Cincinnati summers. Container gardening with annuals will also 

be covered. 

February 22 – Landscape Maintenance and Lawn Care 

This class will cover proper landscape maintenance techniques from 

spring to fall-what to do and when to do it. Learn about the tools 

that make the job easier. In addition, learn the basics to a green lawn. 

Pruning, weed control, fertilization, insect and disease control for the 

complete landscape will all be covered. 

February 29 – Perennial Design 

This class presents basic design concepts for perennial gardens, including 

butterfly gardens, shade gardens, water gardens and more. A slide 

show will help paint a picture after discussing the concepts. 

March 7– Perennial Plants – Part 1 

This is the first of a two part series covering perennials plants for the 

landscape. Perennials can be used in many ways and for many purposes. 

A slide show will include the top 50 perennials for the landscape. 

March 14 - Perennial Plants – Part 2 

The second part of perennial plants will also be a slide show of perennials 

for the landscape. This group will include ornamental grasses, roses, 

vines and other great perennial plants. 

March 21 - Gardening for Wildlife 

This class will focus on creating specialized areas of the landscape for 

wildlife gardening including butterfly and bird gardens and utilizing native 

plants in the landscape. 

SPECIALTY GARDEN PROGRAM 

All You Need to Know About Trees for the Yard and Garden 

Learn how to select the right tree for the right location, how to plant 

and care for trees, evaluate trees for problems, and about many large and 

small trees that perform and look great in our climate and soil conditions. 

Taught by Zoo Horticulturalist and ISA certified Arborist, 

Scott Beuerlein.

THE ZOO GOURMET 

Back by popular demand! Food is a huge part of celebrating holidays. At the Zoo, 

our animals feast year-round on carefully planned diets. Join us for a holiday food 

frenzy and learn how we feed thousands of animals every day. Through a game, 

close encounters, and a behind the scenes tour of the Zoo’s commissary, find out 

why different animals eat different foods and how the Zoo manages its menus.

SEASON’S GREENINGS 

As the holidays approach, we get into the giving spirit -Why not give back to 

Mother Earth? During this family-oriented workshop, we’ll make some eco-friendly 

holiday crafts and learn some tips for making the holiday season and (the year ahead) 

greener.

such as animal demonstrations, hikes though the Zoo, crafts and/or games 

in a manner that is sure to be fun for the whole family. 


POLE-TO-POLE 

Brr…it’s cold out there! So, how come some animals seem right at home in the 

snow? We’ll learn about the special adaptations that allow certain animals to get 

along just fine in a winter wonderland..

New! Family Zoo Yoga 

Yoga makes a great gift for their entire family! Join us to 

foster fitness, family and fun with wildlife at the Zoo. 



Roar like a tiger. Fly like a bird. Move as slowly as a sloth. Explore the 

world of animals and plants in a fun new way - through yoga! You and your 

child will discover more about animals and plants through the practice of 

yoga. This fun and active program is a beginner/mid-level level class for 

adults and children and can serve as a great foundation for developing an 

interest in wildlife and fitness that can last a lifetime. Yoga mats are provided. 

Please bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable clothing.

THE WILD SIDE OF LOVE 

Back by popular demand! To what extreme did you go to get your 

mate…or are you still in the process? Either way, it is nothing compared 

to the courtship extremes found in the natural world! Join us at the Zoo 

for a sizzling night of insight into the lengths to which some species go to procreate. 

This wild night of love will include sparkling beverages and chocolate.

WHAT’S UP, DOC? 

How do you x-ray an aardvark? Who gave the Zoobabies get their first vaccines? 

Find out the answers to these questions and more when you tour the 

Zoo’s recently opened, state-of-the-art vet hospital! See how this building 

helps our Zoo vets provide the best health care and services to our Zoo 

residents. Take a behind the scenes tour of the Zoo’s hospital and learn about 

the equipment and procedures involved in keeping the Zoo animals healthy.

ELEPHANT ENCOUNTER 

How do you wash behind an elephant’s ears? Come and find out as you get a 

backstage tour of the elephants’ house. Learn the ins-and-outs of the keepers’ 

and elephants’ daily routine including food, cleaning, and training as well as 

an insider’s view of the big changes this historical building has undergone.

into the 3rd cohort of the Advanced 

Inquiry Program, the Zoo’s first Masters 

Degree program. AIP is a one-of-a-kind 

graduate program designed for educators who are interested in 

developing their inquiry-based teaching skills and learning exciting 

course content, all while helping to affect positive social 

change in their local communities. Co-delivered by the Cincinnati 

Zoo & Botanical Garden and Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, 

AIP combines graduate courses at the Zoo with web-based 

learning communities that connect you to a broad network of

Family Sleep with the Manatees 

Adults and children 5 years old and up are invited to spend 

the night with our three resident Florida manatees- Wooten, 

Illusion, and 1800-pound Betsy. During this overnight you will 

enjoy two sneak peaks behind the scenes, play games, and fall 

asleep with manatees swimming at your feet.

A Letter from Thane 

Over the past few years we have developed a steady growth in the number of families who 

belong to the Zoo, and naturally, as a result, we have a higher percentage of members visiting 

throughout the year. This is particularly heartening, because not a day passes that somebody 

doesn’t stop me out on the Zoo grounds to mention something they like about our Zoo. Many 

say they love getting closer to animals, others really appreciate all the changes we are making 

to improve the Zoo, and some just like parking in the shade of our new solar panels. 

Our goal is to “inspire every visitor with wildlife, every day,” and we work hard to do just that. 

We have more animal shows and random animal encounters than ever at the Zoo. The result 

is that the Cincinnati Zoo is a much more active experience for our visitors, as well as for 

our animals. Whether it is the lemurs leaping, the gibbons brachiating, or our two young male 

cougars exploring their great new exhibit, there are dozens of opportunities every day to see 

our animals doing what they do best, and to learn more about 

what we do to keep them happy and healthy. 

So, my thanks go to you for belonging to the Cincinnati Zoo. 

We earn our stripes every day of the year, and you are a big part 

of our success.

meeting of the members of the Zoological 

Society of Cincinnati will take 

place on Wednesday November 30th 

at 7:00 pm at the Harold C. Schott 

Frisch’s Theater, at the Cincinnati Zoo. 

The annual business of the Society 

will take place at the meeting including 

the election of trustees. 

Reminder: Please remember that you 

must present your membership card 

and valid photo ID at the admission 

turnstiles each visit. We cannot extend 

membership benefits to you (including 

admission) without each of those 

items. If you have a Family membership, 

each adult on the membership 

must provide identification. Please 

have your membership card and ID 

ready as you approach the turnstiles. 

Reminder: Please remember that 

if you are a Gold level member, a 

babysitter or caregiver may accompany 

your children and receive admission as 

your free “guest.” In order for the caregiver 

to receive free admission, they 

must have your membership card and 

a written note of permission from you 

identifying that person as the “guest” 

of your children. Your cooperation will 

expedite their entry into the Zoo on 

the day of their visit.
