of his Chief Agent for giving life and a perfect
government to mankind . Babylon under
Nebuchadnezzar's grandson Belshazzar had just
fallen, on October 7, 539 B .C., to the Medes and
Persians led by Darius and Cyrus . About two
years more and the seventy years of desolation
of Judah and Jerusalem ordained by Jehovah
would be due to terminate . The prophet Daniel
was keenly interested and wrote of himself : "In
the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of
the seed of the Medes, who was made king over
the realm of the Chaldeans, in the first year of
his reign, I Daniel understood by the books that
the number of the years, whereof the word of
Jehovah came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the
accomplishment of the desolations of Jerusalem,
was seventy years . And I set my face unto the
Lord God." Daniel 9 :1-3, Dar. While Daniel
penitently continued to pray and fast, Jehovah
sent his angel Gabriel with a message which
looked far beyond the rebuilding of desolated
Jerusalem .
