his readers to pay close attention to the prophetic<br />

writings of pre-Christian centuries . 2 Peter 1 :19-<br />

21 and 3 :15,16, NW Just because some were<br />

twisting the Scriptures, Peter did not ban or condemn<br />

reading of the Bible .<br />

12 The apostle Paul, too, writes of the precedence<br />

of the Bible over Christianity and of the<br />

benefits that Christians receive from studying it<br />

rather than religious traditions of false shepherds .<br />

He quotes the pre-Christian Psalms when he<br />

writes : "Just as it is written : The reproaches of<br />

those who were reproaching you have fallen upon<br />

me .' For all the things that were written aforetime<br />

were written for our instruction, that<br />

through our endurance and through the comfort<br />

from the Scriptures we might have hope ." Romans<br />

15 :3,4, NW Do you want light, comfort<br />

and hope? Then read those inspired ancient writings.<br />

Do you want to be wise for gaining salvation?<br />

Then read and heed those Scriptures . Paul's<br />

words to the young man Timothy are for your<br />

information and assurance : "From infancy you<br />

have known the holy writings which are able to<br />

make you wise for salvation through the faith<br />

in connection with Christ Jesus . All Scripture is<br />

inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for<br />

reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining<br />

in righteousness, that the man of God<br />
