CHAPTER V
NO SELF-SALVATION
BY THE LAW OF MOSES
S ALVATION belongeth unto Jehovah : thy
J blessing be upon thy people." Psalm 3 :8,
ASV With these words the royal psalmist
of ancient Israel teaches us that man's eternal
salvation can never come from man himself . This
lesson had to be taught even to those whom God
chose as his people for Abraham's sake. Abraham
was a man of unshakable faith in Jehovah. He
proved this by his works of obedience toward God .
One night after God had led Abraham into the
promised land of Palestine he said to him : "Look
now toward heaven, and number the stars, if thou
be able to number them : and he said unto him,
So shall thy seed be ." Did the aged childless Abraham
believe that divine promise? God's own inspired
