CHAPTER V
NO SELF-SALVATION
BY THE LAW OF MOSES
S ALVATION belongeth unto Jehovah : thy
J blessing be upon thy people." Psalm 3 :8,
ASV With these words the royal psalmist
of ancient Israel teaches us that man's eternal
salvation can never come from man himself . This
lesson had to be taught even to those whom God
chose as his people for Abraham's sake. Abraham
was a man of unshakable faith in Jehovah. He
proved this by his works of obedience toward God .
One night after God had led Abraham into the
promised land of Palestine he said to him : "Look
now toward heaven, and number the stars, if thou
be able to number them : and he said unto him,
So shall thy seed be ." Did the aged childless Abraham
believe that divine promise? God's own inspired
Record answers Yes. "And he believed in
Jehovah ; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness."-Genesis
15 :5, 6, ASV .
2 Not for human perfection and sinlessness, but
for his obedient faith toward God Abraham had
righteousness counted to him . About fifteen years
after this, when Almighty God announced the
i . From whom alone can man's salvation come? Who
were taught this?
2 . a What connection had circumcision with Abraham's
righteousness? b Through whom was his seed
to be reckoned?
