had to endure much by permitting wickedness for<br />

settling the supreme issue, and we can count his<br />

9 Pronouncing sentence upon Adam and Eve,<br />

God assured Eve that she would not immediately<br />

be put to death but would give birth to many<br />

children, subject to her husband's rule . For Adam's<br />

guilt God pronounced a curse on the ground outside<br />

of Eden and added : "In the sweat of thy face<br />

shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the<br />

ground ; for out of it wast thou taken : for dust<br />

thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return ." Genesis<br />

3 :16-19 He pronounced no condemnation to<br />

eternal torment in a hell of fire and brimstone<br />

after Adam and Eve's death . That would have required<br />

eternal life for them . God's unchangeable<br />

law must stand and be enforced : "In the day that<br />

thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die ." Genesis<br />

2 :17 For the very purpose that the sinner<br />

rebels might not live forever God drove them out<br />

of the paradise of pleasure into the cursed earth .<br />

"And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of<br />

us, knowing good and evil : now, therefore, lest<br />

perhaps he put forth his hand, and take also of<br />

the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever . And the<br />

Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure,<br />

to till the earth from which he was taken. And<br />
