State of the media in Southern Africa 2002 Acknowledgements & Introduction So This Is Democracy, which is now in its ninth year of production, continues to play a vital role in documenting the numerous media freedom violations in the Southern African region. The publication of So This is Democracy is further proof of MISA’s commitment to monitoring the media freedom environment in order to expose the numerous violations against media workers in the region. Alerts help turn spotlights from around the world squarely on those responsible for human rights violations - and this can make a significant difference, as those who violate human rights often rely on the cover of darkness. This edition provides incisive insights into and analysis of media freedom trends within the region and is a testimony to our commitment to continue the fight for the promotion and safeguarding of media freedom and freedom of expression. For it is MISA’s vision that our region will become a bastion of democracy and good governance, of which media freedom is a key indicator. We wish to express sincere appreciation to all partner organisations and donors who have contributed to this project – in particular contributors to our basket fund. We also extend appreciation to the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) in Toronto, Canada, which ensures that violations recorded by MISA in Southern Africa receives maximum exposure in the international community and in so doing, allows for rapid, world-wide and coordinated response to press freedom and freedom of expression violations.
