Snapshot: <strong>Truck</strong> Market on The Upswing<br />
America is reviving its traditional love affair with the light-truck,<br />
<strong>SUV</strong> and off-roading segments. With experts predicting a third<br />
consecutive year of rising auto sales in 2012, the light-truck category<br />
seems to be leading the way. The Ford F-Series and the<br />
Chevrolet Silverado again ranked first and second, respectively, among the<br />
top ten vehicles sold last year. Meanwhile, Jeep continued its strong comeback<br />
for Chrysler. Many experts credit pent-up consumer demand, while others<br />
read from the figures tentative signs of economic recovery. Either way,<br />
the growth is welcome.<br />
Of course, this news will probably<br />
come as no surprise to 2011 SEMA Show<br />
attendees. Buyer-registrants expressing an<br />
interest in the <strong>Truck</strong>/<strong>SUV</strong>/Van segment<br />
were up by nearly 20% over the prior<br />
year. Meanwhile, the off-roading category<br />
attracted even more buyer interest, rising<br />
by more than 22%. Among exhibitors, the<br />
South Hall saw 277 booths representing<br />
the <strong>Truck</strong>/<strong>SUV</strong>/<strong>Off</strong>-<strong>Road</strong> category—up<br />
nearly 5%—with 64 first-time exhibitors<br />
contributing to that steady expansion. All<br />
in all, the section encompassed 121,660<br />
square feet of rugged innovation exuding<br />
high traffic and optimism.<br />

more cargo, with crossovers outselling<br />
larger fullsize <strong>SUV</strong>s. Rooftop boxes and<br />
hitch baskets are also hot items.<br />
Internet retailers, automobile manufacturers<br />
and industry suppliers are all<br />
looking for their share of the retail market<br />
and continue to take away sales from<br />
traditional retailers. Consumers have<br />
become extremely well educated by the<br />
Internet even before they come to our<br />
location, and they often dictate the sale.<br />
The greatest opportunity a dealer has is<br />
to go out and work the business and not<br />
wait for business to come to you. Fleet<br />

Overall, the market<br />
seems to be stabilized.<br />
We’ve seen a pretty nice<br />
bump in sales for the<br />
fourth quarter, and I think<br />
consumers are ready to<br />
loosen up a little and start spending on<br />
accessories again.<br />
I am surprised at how well the bedcover<br />
category is doing in the pickup<br />
market. I’m anxious to see how well the<br />
new Undercover painted program is going<br />
to do. If we move even 10% of the units<br />
painted that we move in that category<br />

point and make more money. It is not<br />

those who are willing to search beyond<br />
the norm. An overall positive buying<br />
experience is necessary to keep customers<br />
on either the wholesale or retail side.<br />
Fit the products you offer to the business<br />
model you have. Or change the business<br />
model to fit the products you are selling.<br />
Consumers have more outlets to source<br />
the products they want, and they will<br />
gravitate to the companies that satisfy<br />

I’m surprised that Ford hasn’t created an<br />
off-road-centric <strong>SUV</strong> that the aftermarket<br />
can embrace.<br />
I also think U.S.-made parts are beginning<br />
to shine, even if they are more expensive.<br />
People are starting to see that when<br />
they buy something made in another<br />
country, an American loses his job. Come<br />
up with a cool, quality product that you<br />
think people need, make it right here in<br />
the U.S., stand behind it, and don’t be<br />
afraid to price it appropriately. RCV is a<br />

One good indicator<br />
that the off-road market<br />
has remained steady is the<br />
introduction of the Raptor<br />
SVT in 2010. It was<br />
an enormous gamble for<br />
Ford to introduce a $50,000 off-road<br />
pickup during one of the worst economic<br />
climates, but the gamble paid off, and<br />
it is an excellent indicator that off-road<br />
enthusiasts are hungry for more products<br />
that cater to both their hobby and<br />
their culture.<br />
Consumers are no longer spending 5%<br />
to 10% of their new vehicle’s price tag<br />
on accessorizing but are instead keeping<br />
their vehicles longer and fixing them up.<br />
American manufacturers have had to be<br />
adaptable to the evolving market but also<br />
find ways to reduce costs to compete with<br />
the “knock-offs.”<br />
The most significant hurdles for the<br />
off-road market will be with government<br />
regulations on both our lands and vehicles.<br />
Every year, our off-highway recreational<br />
areas shrink in size, become non-existent,<br />
or are over-regulated. These restrictions<br />
and outright closures of our designated<br />
recreational lands will have a ripple effect<br />
on both the industry and the manufacturers<br />
that cater to this segment. Every manufacturer<br />
that has a vested interest in the<br />
off-road market needs to take notice and<br />
become active in keeping our designated<br />

Versatility is an important<br />
theme in street trucks.<br />
The truck that folks use<br />
for work or a commute is<br />
the same one they use for<br />

Dealers in that marketplace should<br />
focus on versatile items. For instance,<br />
<strong>SUV</strong>s aren’t the best-handling vehicles,<br />
and we’ve seen an increase in attention<br />
to this segment with lowered <strong>SUV</strong>s and<br />
upgrades to the suspension, like sway<br />
bars. Don’t be afraid to upsell or make<br />
recommendations that will benefit the<br />
truck both for work and for play.<br />
In off-roading, events seem to be<br />
growing surprisingly quickly within the<br />
current economy, with people meeting<br />
people on the trail or on the race course.<br />
We’re seeing events like King of the<br />
Hammers expand rapidly each year,<br />
and new racing associations are popping<br />
up to serve other niches within<br />
this community. <strong>Off</strong>-road dealers<br />
should get out there and play with their<br />
customers; people buy from people they<br />
like, know and trust.<br />
Regulations and vehicle technologies<br />
are going to offer some significant challenges<br />
in the upcoming years for the<br />
truck and off-road markets. As SEMA<br />
members, we should all be working<br />
closely with the association’s government<br />
affairs office and the vehicle technology<br />
group.<br />

FMVSS 126 are priorities for suspension,<br />
tire and wheel manufacturers. Superlift<br />
was one of the first manufacturers to participate<br />
in a SEMA-led co-op approach to<br />
verify that our systems meet these standards<br />
using vehicle simulation. Installers<br />
should ask their preferred manufacturers<br />
for whatever test data they can provide.<br />
For several years now, leveling kits and<br />
shorter lifts have been hot items, but we<br />
have seen demand rise for taller lifts, too.<br />
Determining lift and method is driven<br />
by desired tire height and budget. The<br />
mainstream trend continues to revolve<br />
around whatever lift it takes to run a<br />
35-inch-tall tire.<br />
Keeping pace with the introduction<br />
of new models and increasingly complex<br />
technology will be challenges going forward.<br />
Also, for true three-step manufacturers<br />
like Superlift, it’s always a struggle<br />
to maintain profit margin for the brickand-mortar<br />
installers who must compete<br />
with the low-cost, direct-to-consumer<br />
manufacturers.<br />

When the pickup craze<br />
slowed down, it left the<br />
market with the core truck<br />
buyer—long-time truck<br />
owners who either use a<br />
truck on a job, for a recreational<br />
lifestyle or for the diverse uses<br />
a truck provides. These core buyers have<br />
mostly leaned toward fullsize pickups for<br />
work, towing or just a long-time love of<br />
a fullsize truck. Many are keeping their<br />
trucks longer and accessorizing older<br />
trucks instead of purchasing new. Soft<br />
tonneaus, winches, floor mats, tires and<br />
wheels all seem to be hot accessories.<br />
I think we will continue to see increased<br />
sales in crossover utility vehicles and<br />
vehicles with improved fuel economy,<br />
including more diesel and hybrid trucks<br />
and <strong>SUV</strong>s. Crossovers and hybrids are<br />
trending toward sleeker and smaller, and<br />
they offer many tech options such as iPod<br />
connections, advanced GPS systems and<br />
sound systems. These vehicles are purchased<br />
new with more OE options but<br />
not as much aftermarket accessorization.<br />
Government regulations, mpg<br />
requirements and vehicle technology<br />
will be hurdles in the next few years.<br />
That is why an organization like SEMA<br />
is so important to its members for providing<br />
vehicle technology information,<br />
involvement with federal, state and local<br />
governments, market research and networking<br />
with other industry members.<br />

One trend that surprised<br />
me was the Ford<br />
Raptor. The Raptor has<br />
been an incredible seller<br />
for Ford and for the people<br />
who build products<br />
that support the vehicle. Raptor owners<br />
seem to be very hot for aftermarket parts,<br />
and the truck is doing very well for a lot<br />
of companies.<br />
On the other hand, the JK Wrangler<br />
has been doing well for years, and it<br />
has taken a big chunk out of the fullsize<br />
<strong>SUV</strong> market when it comes to trail and<br />
off-road vehicles. The previous Wrangler<br />
was very small, and it was hard to fit four<br />
people in. When the JK Wrangler came<br />
out in 2007, it was basically a fullsize<br />
Jeep, big enough to fit a family of four<br />
and all their gear. Ever since then, it has<br />
dominated that marketplace.<br />
The overall trend is that people are<br />
going back to 35- to 37-inch tires<br />
and somewhat smaller wheels. As they<br />
have gotten more experience on larger<br />
wheels, they are realizing that they can<br />
wear out some front-end components<br />
prematurely, so they’re going to a smaller<br />
wheel with the same diameter tire. Consumers<br />
are becoming more educated and<br />
are making smarter decisions with their<br />
vehicles.<br />

trend that is emerging is the expanding<br />
interest in overlanding vehicles that are<br />
built with self-sufficiency in mind.<br />
It is also clear that Ford’s F-150 with<br />
the EcoBoost V-6 is a winner. We are<br />
just now seeing the tip of the iceberg of<br />
what the aftermarket will be able to do<br />
with that engine.<br />
Giant lifted pickups seem to be out.<br />
This niche was hit hard by the economy<br />
and rising gas prices. People are all about<br />
function over bling these days, as well as<br />
affordable upgrades that work. There is<br />
also a trend toward less chrome and more<br />
muted tones.<br />
There are still opportunities in suspension<br />
as well as wheels and tires. Bumpers<br />
and lighting are other products still<br />
in demand. Functional upgrades that<br />
improve the usefulness of the vehicle are<br />
popular.<br />
Our hobby is constantly under attack<br />
from overregulation, and I see this to be<br />
a continuing theme that isn’t going to go<br />
away any time soon. Thanks to the people<br />
at SEMA, we have an opportunity to<br />
save our hobby before it is too late.<br />
