MONGOOSE AND
SNAKE FIGHTS
The pitts, especially
in Rivière Pilote, also
feature combat between
mongooses and snakes. In
specially designed glass cages,
these two well-matched adversaries
observe each other for a long time,
before the first assault is ever made. As a rule, the
mongooses emerge victorious from these fights.
Shopping - Souvenirs
ARTISANAL PRODUCTS
Creole jewelry with original designs, objects made
of bamboo, wood sculptures, baskets, pottery
and Creole dolls dressed in madras are some of
the artisanal products that you will find in souvenir
boutiques, or in the artisanal market in the Savane,
in Fort-de-France. Madras, at one time used to make
traditional Creole clothes, is today used to make all
sorts of clothes...dresses, shirts, sarongs...a souvenir
ready-to-wear !
When it comes to Martinique’s artisanal traditions,
the quality of our craftsmanship is evident in our
numerous creations, which are rich in color and
creativity. You’ll have an embarrassment of choices!
Connoiseurs say that Martinican rum is the
best in the world. White or old rum, but
also liqueurs : coconut punch, passion
fruit punch, orange punch. To each his
own !
CREOLE JEWELRY
Whether a traditional beaded
collier-chou («darling’s
necklace»), a chaîneforçat
jewelry brilliantly tops
off any traditional Creole
costume. Designed
by artisan jewelers,
Martinique’s 18th carat gold
pieces recalls its history.
PRACTICAL POINTS
Martinique has the reputation of being Paris’ shop
window in the heart of the Caribbean. Most imported
products have the label «made in France.» Some
of the biggest French and international brands
(perfumes, lingerie, clothing, watches, leather goods,
etc.) are sold in Martinique, as well as the creations
of Martinican designers. Non-local checks are rarely
accepted. Duty-free purchases are possible in certain
stores, particularly those in the bonded areas (beyond
the checkpoints) in the departure halls of airports, or
in Fort-de-France’s commercial port.
SWEETS, JAMS AND PASTRIES
Made from our succulant tropical fruits: coconut
bars, doucelettes, fruit jams, as well as traditional and
gourmet pastries. All these will delight the discerning
palate. You will immediately appreciate the savoirfaire
of our pastry chefs, who will amaze you.
FLOWERS
With a lifespan of two to three weeks, anthuriums,
porcelain roses, heliconias or red gingers will recall
memories of your trip to Martinique a thousand times
over. Florists in Martinique will wrap the flowers and
send them home for you.
