SAINTE-LUCE<br />

RIVIERE - PILOTE<br />

The breadbasket of the<br />

south, Rivière-Pilote is set<br />

amidst luxuriant vegetation. A<br />

few miles outside of town, there is<br />

a « pitt » where they hold cock fights,<br />

as well as fights between mongooses and<br />

snakes. On the same road is the La Mauny Distillery,<br />

which makes the most admired white rums on the<br />

island. Rivière-Pilote is also important historically, as<br />

it was here that the Southern Insurrection against the<br />

French government started in 1870. Other attractions:<br />

the beach at Anse Figuier, where you’ll also find the<br />

Ecomuseum of Martinique.<br />

LE MARIN<br />

The seat of the southern subprefecture (district), Le<br />

Marin has seen significant economic development<br />

thanks to the fact that its bay is terrific for anchoring<br />

boats and offers a State of the Arts yachting center.<br />

The many cultural and nautical activities set the<br />

rhythm of life here. Attraction: Le Marin’s church, built<br />

in 1766, is one of the most beautiful historic buildings<br />

in Martinique.<br />

SAINTE-ANNE<br />

A pretty community on the extreme southern end of<br />

the island, Sainte-Anne’s territory includes numerous<br />

capes and coves, as well as magnificent whitesand<br />

beaches. The best known beach, Grande<br />

Anse des Salines, is one of the most beautiful in the<br />

Lesser Antilles. Beyond Salines Point, the Savane<br />

des Pétrifications (Petrified Savanna Forest) is an<br />

exceptional geological site. Sainte-Anne is also the<br />

location of Club Méditerranée « Buccaneer’s Creek,<br />

» which was recently renovated and boasts a fourtrident<br />

Club Med quality rating.<br />

VAUCLIN<br />

This is a community centered around<br />

fishing, where you can regularly<br />

stock up on fish and shellfish. The<br />

arrival of the yoles (Martinican<br />

racing boats) and gommiers<br />

(small Martinican fishing<br />

boats) is a spectacle<br />

not to be missed. A<br />

few miles away, Anse<br />

Macabou boasts a welldeveloped<br />

beach, and<br />

the swimming at Faula<br />

Point is said to be very<br />

safe. Hikes on Vauclin<br />

Mountain are rewarded<br />

with beautiful panoramic<br />

views.<br />

SAINT-ESPRIT<br />

This farming community is known for its production<br />

of fruit, vegetables and sugarcane. Don’t miss the<br />

Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires (Museum of<br />

Popular Arts and Traditions), which shows the rich<br />

cultural heritage of Martinique. The town itself boasts<br />

some fine examples of vernacular architecture.<br />

LE FRANÇOIS<br />

The economy of this coastal town is centered on<br />

fishing and farming, but Le François is also known for<br />

the breakers, islets and fonds blancs (large sandbars)<br />

that make for terrific boating excursions. Inland,<br />

you’ll find the flower-filled Domaine de l’Acajou, once<br />

the home of the Clément Distillery. The rum is now<br />

made elsewhere, but the estate has been opened<br />
