SAINTE-MARIE<br />

This is a community whose agricultural and cultural<br />

heritage remains vibrant, most notably through its<br />

traditional music, the cultural center at Habitation<br />

Fonds Saint-Jacques, the rum museum at the<br />

Saint-James Distillery, the banana museum, the<br />

House of Bèlè music center, and the workshop of<br />

Carib basketry. Sainte-Marie is a lively town, with a<br />

reputation for good food, and every year it’s the site<br />

of a culinary festival of international renown.<br />

TRINITE<br />

The territory of Trinité runs from the coast to an inland<br />

region where banana and sugarcane fields thrive in<br />

fertile soil. The town is the seat of the subprefecture<br />

(district) for the northern Atlantic coast. Attraction: the<br />

Caravelle peninsula, which is classified as a National<br />

Grand Site, and is managed by the Natural Regional<br />

Park of Martinique. On the peninsula you’ll find the<br />

ruins of the Château Dubuc, a historical monument.<br />

There is also Tartane, a fishing village well-known for<br />

its good food, its tourist facilities and water sports.<br />

Also well worth a look are the nearby Galion factory,<br />

the last sugar refinery left in Martinique, and the<br />

Galion Hindu temple.<br />

LE ROBERT<br />

This community is nestled in the innermost corner<br />

of a verdant bay. Here you can see fish farms or go<br />

boating among the many small islands sprinkled<br />

across the turquoise water. Regattas are held here.<br />

Twelve and a half miles from Fort-de-France.<br />

THE CENTER<br />

GROS-MORNE<br />

This is essentially a farming community. Its traditional<br />

agricultural products include sugarcane, pineapples<br />

and bananas, as well as produce from « Creole<br />

gardens, » small plots of land where fruit and<br />

vegetables are grown. It is in Gros-Morne that you’ll<br />

find a large part of Martinique’s flower production:<br />

anthuriums, alpinias, heliconias... Not to be missed:<br />

the orchards in Gros-Morne, and the plant and flower<br />

market.<br />

SAINT-JOSEPH<br />

This town is located in the interior of the island not<br />

far from Fort-de-France. The soil and climate here are<br />

perfect for agriculture, and the well-developed forest<br />

called « Coeur Bouliki » is a great place for picnicking.<br />

Seven and a half miles from Fort-de-France.<br />

FORT-DE-FRANCE<br />

The capital of Martinique, Fort-de-France has a lot of<br />

tourist and cultural amenities, including:<br />

The bay, one of the most beautiful in the world.<br />

The vegetable, fruit and spice market.<br />

The fish market.<br />

The Savane, the public garden, with magnificent<br />

tropical plants and trees.<br />

Saint Louis Fort, classified as a historical monument.<br />

Saint Louis Cathedral, built in 1895.<br />

Schoelcher Library: originally the Canadian pavilion<br />

in the 1898 Universal Exposition in Paris, built by<br />

architect Henri Picq a collaborator of Gustave Eiffel.<br />

The Atrium cultural center.<br />

Other attractions: the Martinique Departmental<br />

Museum, with its treasures of pre-Columbian<br />

archeology; the Regional Museum of History and<br />

Ethnography; and the Municipal Theater and other<br />

sites of historic or architectural interest, including<br />

many examples of colonial architecture.<br />

LE LAMENTIN<br />

Aimé Césaire Airport, the renovated and modernized<br />

horse-racing track, and the local industrial parks are<br />

the three poles of activity that define Le Lamentin.<br />

The surrounding plain of Lamentin is blanketed with<br />

sugarcane and banana fields. Attraction: The Perrine<br />

Farm, a park with farm animals, as well as wild<br />

animals native to the Antilles.<br />
