Classified as a historial monument, Saint-Louis Fort
is an example of a style of military architecture called
à la Vauban. It was built in 1640, at the behest of
Governor De Baas, as a fortification necessitated by
the Franco-British rivalry during the colonial era.

LE MEMORIAL DE L’ANSE CAFARD

On April 8, 1830, a slave ship attempted some risky
maneuvers off Le Diamant when the sea was very
rough. At 11:00 p.m., the ship was caught up in some
furious waves and broke apart on the rocks. It was
utterly destroyed. The following day, 46 bodies were
recovered. The corpses of sailors were buried in the
cemetery of Le Diamant, while those of drowned
Africans were buried at some distance from the
shore. Designed by Martinican artist Laurent Valère,
the monument honors the disappeared victims of the
slave trade.
