This five-acre park is located at the edge of a forest
in La Ferme, near Les Trois-Ilets. Upon entering, you
will notice a recreated 19th century rural settlement,
that will give you an idea of how martinican peasants
lived during and after the period of slavery. With their
wooden walls, beaten-earth floors, and cane-leaf
roofs, the small houses constitute a village of an tan
lontan, Creole for “a long time ago”. Strolling among
them, you’ll immerse yourself in the history and
traditions of Martinique.
With its cupola and colorful façades,
the Schoelcher Library is without
a doubt the most beautiful
building in Fort-de-France. It
is the work of architect Henri
Picq, a contemporary of
Gustave Eiffel who also
designed the Saint-Louis
Cathedral. The building
first served as Canada’s
pavilion at the 1889 Paris
Exposition, and was then
transported to Martinique.
Its Romanesque-Byzantine
architectural style is
elaborate but nonetheless in
harmony with the building’s
surroundings.
Ex-PALAIS DE JUSTICE
Rue Schœlcher 97200 FORT-DE-FRANCE
Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the former
Palace of Justice was once the stage on which the
history of Martinique was played out. If the walls had
ears, the former courtrooms would still resonate with
the memorable pleas of eminent lawyers like Victor
Sévère, Joseph Lagrosillière, and others.
