Built in 1887, this is one of the<br />

two oldest « bourgeois villas » in<br />

the city center. In 1991, Martinique’s<br />

Regional Council acquired the villa in order to<br />

transform it into its Regional Museum of History and<br />

Ethnography. This museum is a veritable gem that<br />

displays beautiful collections of furniture, paintings,<br />

engravings, documents, jewels and traditional<br />

costumes.<br />

A part of the Leyritz Plantation, which dates from the<br />

18th century, the Museum of Plant Figurines is an<br />

amazing collection of dolls in the costumes of that<br />

period, made from natural materials: flowers, leaves,<br />

and dried leaves.<br />

Located near the place where Paul Gauguin and<br />

his friend Charles Laval lived for a few months in<br />

1887, the museum depicts a critical period in the the<br />

life of the artist. There are reproductions of several<br />

paintings, among them La Cueillette des Marigots, La<br />

Vie à Saint-Pierre and La Plage des Raisiniers.<br />

Devoted to the catastrophe on May 8, 1902, which<br />

in three minutes totally destroyed the town of Saint-<br />

Pierre, the museum recalls the splendor and beauty of<br />

the town before the eruption. It also evokes that day’s<br />

destructive violence, which killed 30,000 people.<br />
