Tascher de la Pagerie, later Empress Joséphine,<br />
was born in 1763, this small, elegant stone house<br />
is a museum devoted to her memory. Joséphine’s<br />
childhood bed, portraits, and letters from Napoleon<br />
form the bulk of the collection.<br />

The Museum of Coffee and Cocoa offers visitors<br />
a panorama of the ancient traditions of coffee and<br />
chocolate cultivation. There are descriptions of the<br />
different stages of coffee and chocolate manufacture,<br />
as well as objects from earlier centuries, such as<br />
machines used in the process, coffee mills, coffee<br />
pots and hot chocolate pots.<br />

The Regional Volcano Museum is a center for<br />
information and documentation on volcanology<br />
and for the observation of Mount Pelée. There is<br />
a « vidéothèque » showing volcanic eruptions, a<br />
seismic station, geographic aquariums, a document<br />
collection, and pedagogical signs from the CNRS<br />
(National Center of Scientific Research) and CSDA<br />
(Antilles Center of Seismic Data). The museum also<br />
organizes hikes and « discovery » trails.<br />

The Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions shows<br />
the historical, cultural and social aspects of village<br />
life. Nearby you’ll find an exhibit of artistic and<br />

music—all of which highlight Martinique’s natural and<br />
