General Information
History
It was in 1502, on his fourth voyage to the New World,
that Christopher Columbus landed in Martinique. At
that time, the island was inhabited by the Carib Indians,
who had earlier chased out the Arawak Indians. Like
the Caribs, the Arawaks had originally come from the
Orinoco River Valley, near the northern coast of South
America. It was on Columbus’ arrival that Martinique
was dubbed Madinina, « the island of flowers. »
Martinique Today
Geography
Situated in the heart of the Caribbean archipelago,
Martinique belongs to the “Windward Islands” of the
Lesser Antilles. Its coasts are lapped in the east by
the Atlantic Ocean and in the west by the Caribbean
Sea. Martinique is 4,350 miles from Paris, 1,950 miles
from New York, and 275 miles from the coast of
South America. Its nearest neighbors to the north are
Domenica (16 miles away) and Guadeloupe (75 miles),
and its nearest neighbor to the south is Saint Lucia (23
miles). Martinique is equidistant between Venezuela
and Haïti/Domincan Republic, at 497 miles from both.
Topography
Martinique is 425 square miles in size. It is 50 miles
long at its longest, and just over 24 miles wide at its
widest. The northern part of the island is geologically
young and active, characterized by mountains (Mount
Pelée is the highest at 4,483 feet), dense forests,
rivers, and cascades. In the center, the Lamentin Plain
makes the transition from the mountainous north to
the south’s gentler and geologically older landscape
of rolling hills. The southern coast is dotted with many
lovely bays and coves. In the southernmost part of the
island, a savanna of petrified trees is a true geological
curiosity.
Since 1635, with the exception of two short periods
of British occupation, Martinique’s destiny was tied
to France. Today, Martinique is simultaneously an
official department of France (since 1946) and an
official region of France (since 1982). The seat of the
prefectural government, Fort-de-France, is the main
administrative and economic center of Martinique.
Martinique is divided into three sub-prefectures :
- Trinité, covering the northern Atlantic coast
- Saint-Pierre, covering the northern Caribbean
coast
- Le Marin, covering the south
Flora and Fauna
Due to its tropical climate, Martinique is covered with a
mantle of lush vegetation: sumptuous rainforests, bush,
savannah, and innumerable species of trees, fruits,
plants and flowers...and don’t forget the mangroves.
This ensemble makes Martinique an extraordinary
garden.
The fauna is essentially composed of birds, fish and
crustaceans, but there are also iguanas, small lizards
called mabouyas or anolis, and trigonocephale snakes
unique to the island. The manicou, a kind of possum,
is one of the few mammals to have made the Antilles
their home. The mongoose, on the other hand, was
introduced by man to keep the snake population in
check.
Climate
The climate is relatively mild in Martinique. It never
gets very hot. The average temperature of 79 degrees
graces the island with an “eternal summer.” Breezes
from the east and northeast, the Alizes, constantly
cool and refresh the island.

The population of Martinique is « pluralist, »
its diversity due to the mixing of successive
occupants of the island: Amerindians,
Europeans, Africans, Indians,
Levantines, and East Asians, of
whom about 100,000 live in the
main center, Fort-de-France.
Arts, crafts, a literature

dance, gastronomy, and
the art de vivre all make
Martinique a land of rich
tradition and culture.

In Martinique, all religions
are represented.
Important Dates in
Martinican History
Before 1493 : The Caribs follow the Arawaks to the
Lesser Antilles, both originating in South America,
along the Orinoco River in Venezuela.
1502 : Christopher Columbus sets foot in Martinique.
1635 : In September of that year, Pierre Belain
d’Esnambuc lands in Martinique. On the site of
his disembarkation he builds Saint-Pierre Fort, the
beginning of the town of the same name.
1635 - 1654 : Hostilities between the the colonists and
the Caribs. The latter were confined to an area called
Cabesterre, on the Caravelle Peninsula, on the Atlantic
coast.
1636 : Introduction of the first African slaves to the
French Antilles.
1658 : The near elimination of the Caribs by the
Europeans.
1685 : Establishment of the Black Code by Colbert,
with 60 articles that officially regulated the life of slaves
until 1848.
1662 - 1848 : Full development of the slave-based
plantation economy.
1848 : Abolition of slavery and the beginning of the
gradual introduction of laborers from India.
May 8, 1902 : Mount Pelée erupted, destroying the
nearby town of Saint-Pierre (known as the « Venice of
the Caribbean ») and causing 30,000 deaths.
March 19, 1946 : Martinique becomes a department
of France, represented by four deputies in the National
Assembly and by two Senators.
1982 : As a result of a decentralization policy by the
French government, Martinique becomes a French
region (the largest governmental unit within France).
To this day, Martinique remains a department and a
region at the same time.

passports. Citizens of the United
States or Canada may enter
without a visa for a stay of under
three months, but they must
have valid passports. For all
non-residents, a round-trip
ticket is obligatory.

Health Requirements for Entry
There are no required vaccines, except for visitors from
South America and Africa, for whom an international
certificate of yellow fever immunization is required.
The Internet
The island is equipped with top-notch Internet
connections. Most of the hotels are equipped with
WIFI, which is also available at the Martinique Aimé
Cesaire Airport.

Languages
The official language is French, but all Martinicans
speak Creole, a mix of old French with English, African
dialects and surviving Amerindian words.
Money
The currency is the same as that of metropolitan
France: the Euro. The American dollar is generally
accepted, as are credit cards. Some establishments
may refuse non-local checks. There are many ATM’s
throughout the island.
Water and Electricity
Tap water is drinkable throughout the island. Mineral
water is also available. The electric current is 220
volts.
Postal Service and
Telecommunications
Martinique has all the modern communications
facilities: telephones, fax machines, Internet, and WIFI.
For phoning, there are international connections, cell
phones, and many telephone booths in the towns and
urban centers.
All telephone numbers in Martinique have 10 digits,
beginning with 0596 for land-line phones and 0696
for cell phones.
To call numbers in metropolitan France from
Martinique, just dial the 10 digits of the phone
number, as you would when dialing numbers within
the island.
To call abroad from Martinique, dial the code for
international calls (00), then the country code, and
then the phone number.
To call Martinique from abroad, dial the code for
international calls (011 from the US), followed by the
country code (596), then 596 (or 696 for cell phones),
and then the rest of the phone number. Note that the «
0 » is dropped from 0596 and 0696 when calling from
abroad.

Martinique has bus service within and between towns.
In Fort-de-France, bus areas are located mainly along
Boulevard Général de Gaulle. You can also take
communal taxis at Point Simon. They run from early
in the morning until 6:00 p.m. This mode of transport,

the Departmental Museum of Pre-Columbian
Archeology has been housed since 1971 in the old
military supply headquarters, built at the end of the
19th century. With over 2,000 objects on display, the
museum retraces the long history of the settlement
of Martinique by the Arawak
and Carib Indians. The

engraved or painted bowls, vases made of
Roucou wood and, above all, an important
collection of adornments, all of which make

two oldest « bourgeois villas » in
the city center. In 1991, Martinique’s
Regional Council acquired the villa in order to
transform it into its Regional Museum of History and

LE MEMORIAL DE L’ANSE CAFARD

On April 8, 1830, a slave ship attempted some risky
maneuvers off Le Diamant when the sea was very
rough. At 11:00 p.m., the ship was caught up in some
furious waves and broke apart on the rocks. It was
utterly destroyed. The following day, 46 bodies were
recovered. The corpses of sailors were buried in the
cemetery of Le Diamant, while those of drowned
Africans were buried at some distance from the
shore. Designed by Martinican artist Laurent Valère,
the monument honors the disappeared victims of the
slave trade.

the cassava pulp appears in the form of compact
blocks. These blocks are put through a sieve to be
made into flour (farine) and to be rid of any remaining
waste. Next, this cassava flour is thrown onto platines
(large, round griddles), which are heated over wood
fires.
The slow cooking, a step called rouissage, is done to
neutralize the hydrocyanic acid present in the flour.
During this process, the flour is being constantly
rotated with the help of a plane.
After the slow cooking is done, the cassava flour is
spread out on the still-hot platines in the form of flat
cakes. These cakes are then garnished with guava
jam or coconut, and folded over. And then…you
taste it while it’s still warm. This is a delicacy that has
no equal!

CASE-PILOTE
The town of Case-Pilote is noted for its traditional
architecture, whose beauty is well worth a detour.
A main attraction is the church, which has been
classified as a historic site. Dating from the 17th
century, and built in the Jesuit Baroque style, it is the
oldest church on the island. Case-Pilote is also the
birthplace of some important people in the history of
Martinique, including Victor Sévère, mayor of Fort-de-

Capital of Martinique before its destruction in 1902,
when Mount Pelée erupted, Saint-Pierre is today
the subprefecture (district capital) of the northern
Caribbean region. It has been classified by the
French government as a «City of Art and History. »

MORNE-ROUGE
This vacation community dots the slopes of Mount
Pelée. Anyone wishing to climb this majestic
mountain will be better off with a guide. Morne-
Rouge is well known for its plantations of anthurium
flowers and its well-regarded spring water, bottled
right on the premises. This town is also a pilgrimage
site well-known in Martinique: It was partly destroyed
shortly after Saint-Pierre, in an eruption of Mount
Pelée on August 30, 1902. Attraction: A majesterial
work by French sculptor Arman, Les larmes de fonte
(« The Melting Tears »), a large-scale « accumulation
» that commemorates the abolition of slavery. Also

AJOUPA-BOUILLON
This mountain community marks the beginning of the
North Atlantic region, and it boasts some marvelous
natural sites, especially the «Gorges de la Rivière
Falaise » (Gorges of the Falaise River). A climb along
the gorges will eventually take you to a very pretty
waterfall. In the gardens of Ajoupa-Bouillon you
can buy tropical flowers, which they will ship home
for you. Other attractions: Saut Babin, a waterfall
on the Capot River; Maison des Ananas (House of
Pineapples); and the Les Ombrages botanical garden,
with excellent displays of the local flora, including
beautiful trees. This lovely village earned the label
«Villes et Villages Fleuris » (Towns and Villages in
Flower).

BASSE-POINTE
The birthplace of the great poet Aimé Césaire. Along
the road to the town, you can admire the expansive
banana and pineapple fields. Be sure to make a
detour and visit the Leyritz Plantation, a colonial
house built in 1700 and restored in 1970.Today it’s a
hotel-restaurant where you can explore a museum of
plant dolls. Basse-Pointe is a historic place situated
near some venerable plantations: Pécoul, Chalvet,
and Gradis. In the town itself, you will discover the
300-year-old bells of the local church, which were
salvaged from the bottom of the Atlantic and recently
restored. Basse-Pointe is also the birthplace (1869) of
Doctor Hyppolite Morestin, renowned plastic surgeon
at the famous Val-de-Grâce Hospital in Paris.

GRAND-RIVIERE

Located on the northern-most point of the island,
Grand-Rivière will seduce you with the incredible
diversity of its terrain: forest, river, mountains. If you

Formerly called La Grande-Anse, this town is the
location of an important pre-Columbian site (Vivé).
Le Lorrain is embued with rich traditions and a grand
history. It was the site of an early 19th-century revolt

A community swathed in flowers, Marigot is built

Perched at the top of a cliff overhanging the Atlantic

This is a community whose agricultural and cultural
heritage remains vibrant, most notably through its
traditional music, the cultural center at Habitation
Fonds Saint-Jacques, the rum museum at the
Saint-James Distillery, the banana museum, the
House of Bèlè music center, and the workshop of
Carib basketry. Sainte-Marie is a lively town, with a
reputation for good food, and every year it’s the site
of a culinary festival of international renown.

TRINITE
The territory of Trinité runs from the coast to an inland
region where banana and sugarcane fields thrive in
fertile soil. The town is the seat of the subprefecture
(district) for the northern Atlantic coast. Attraction: the
Caravelle peninsula, which is classified as a National
Grand Site, and is managed by the Natural Regional
Park of Martinique. On the peninsula you’ll find the
ruins of the Château Dubuc, a historical monument.
There is also Tartane, a fishing village well-known for
its good food, its tourist facilities and water sports.
Also well worth a look are the nearby Galion factory,
the last sugar refinery left in Martinique, and the
Galion Hindu temple.

LE ROBERT
This community is nestled in the innermost corner
of a verdant bay. Here you can see fish farms or go

across the turquoise water. Regattas are held here.

THE CENTER
GROS-MORNE
This is essentially a farming community. Its traditional
agricultural products include sugarcane, pineapples
and bananas, as well as produce from « Creole
gardens, » small plots of land where fruit and
vegetables are grown. It is in Gros-Morne that you’ll
find a large part of Martinique’s flower production:
anthuriums, alpinias, heliconias... Not to be missed:
the orchards in Gros-Morne, and the plant and flower
market.

SAINT-JOSEPH
This town is located in the interior of the island not
far from Fort-de-France. The soil and climate here are
perfect for agriculture, and the well-developed forest
called « Coeur Bouliki » is a great place for picnicking.

LE LAMENTIN
Aimé Césaire Airport, the renovated and modernized
horse-racing track, and the local industrial parks are
the three poles of activity that define Le Lamentin.
The surrounding plain of Lamentin is blanketed with
sugarcane and banana fields. Attraction: The Perrine
Farm, a park with farm animals, as well as wild
animals native to the Antilles.

RIVIERE-SALEE
This was the home of Joseph Zobel, author of the
novel La Rue Case-Nègres (Sugar Cane Alley).
Director Euzahn Palcy made a film version of the
novel, earning a Silver Lion award at the Venice Film
Festival in 1983 and the Cesar for Best First Film in
1982. The many factory ruins testify to a prosperous
past centered on the manufacture of rum and sugar.
Today Rivière-Salée still has a thriving commercial
and industrial sector. The town is surrounded by
plains mostly devoted to the cultivation of sugarcane,
and there is a mangrove swamp nearby.

ANSES D’ARLET
Located to the south of Morne Champagne
(Champagne Hill), Anses d’Arlet is a fishing
community whose magnificent beach, Grande-Anse,
makes it a much sought-after vacation destination,
especially for sailing. Located between Les Trois-Ilets
and Diamant, Grande-Anse is only one of the many
inhabited coves that dent the coast.

DIAMANT
This town faces the most beautiful « diamond » in
the world. A veritable gem, the Rocher du Diamant
(Diamond Rock) lies two and a half miles off the
coast. There are vantage points from which you can
admire this magnificent peak, a volcanic chimney
that’s also a bird sanctuary designated as a natural
preserve. This 575-foot-high rock is not only of
interest to nature lovers. It is also historic, the object
of many battles between the French and the British
in the early 19th century. Also worthy of note is Dizac
Beach, where there is a pre-Columbian archeological
site. Other attractions: the memorial at Anse Cafard
commemorating the lives lost in a wreckage of a
slave ship on April 8, 1830; a 17th-century church;
and the Maison du Bagnard (Convict’s House), which
faces Diamond Rock and is located on the site of
the Gaoulé Rebellion, a revolt of local planters in
1717 against French efforts to end illegal sugar trade
among the Caribbean islands.

LES TROIS-ILETS
This brick-colored community has so much to offer.
Within the town limits are: the Musée de la Pagerie
(Pagerie Museum), located on the estate where the
future Empress Josephine was born; the Vatable
Forest, a place for family and friends to gather
and stroll; the marvelous departmental golf course,
designed by Robert Trent Jones; the village market;
the church, classified as a historic site; Maison de la
Canne (House of Cane), which shows the history of
sugarcane cultivation in Martinique; Château Gaillard;
the hospital; and the Pottery Village, with its many
boutiques. There is also canoeing and kayaking
among mangroves. Nearby is Pointe du Bout,
Martinique’s historic seaside resort town that you
can reach by car or by boat.

RIVIERE - PILOTE
The breadbasket of the
south, Rivière-Pilote is set
amidst luxuriant vegetation. A
few miles outside of town, there is
a « pitt » where they hold cock fights,
as well as fights between mongooses and
snakes. On the same road is the La Mauny Distillery,
which makes the most admired white rums on the
island. Rivière-Pilote is also important historically, as
it was here that the Southern Insurrection against the
French government started in 1870. Other attractions:
the beach at Anse Figuier, where you’ll also find the
Ecomuseum of Martinique.

LE MARIN
The seat of the southern subprefecture (district), Le
Marin has seen significant economic development
thanks to the fact that its bay is terrific for anchoring
boats and offers a State of the Arts yachting center.
The many cultural and nautical activities set the
rhythm of life here. Attraction: Le Marin’s church, built
in 1766, is one of the most beautiful historic buildings
in Martinique.

SAINTE-ANNE
A pretty community on the extreme southern end of
the island, Sainte-Anne’s territory includes numerous
capes and coves, as well as magnificent whitesand
beaches. The best known beach, Grande
Anse des Salines, is one of the most beautiful in the
Lesser Antilles. Beyond Salines Point, the Savane
des Pétrifications (Petrified Savanna Forest) is an
exceptional geological site. Sainte-Anne is also the
location of Club Méditerranée « Buccaneer’s Creek,
» which was recently renovated and boasts a fourtrident
Club Med quality rating.

SAINT-ESPRIT
This farming community is known for its production
of fruit, vegetables and sugarcane. Don’t miss the

LE FRANÇOIS
The economy of this coastal town is centered on
fishing and farming, but Le François is also known for
the breakers, islets and fonds blancs (large sandbars)
that make for terrific boating excursions. Inland,
you’ll find the flower-filled Domaine de l’Acajou, once
the home of the Clément Distillery. The rum is now
made elsewhere, but the estate has been opened

the link between rum and Martinican culture.The
Maison Créole, the restored 18th-century residence
on the property, is beautifully appointed and has been
classified as a historic monument.

Great Escapes
THE BOTANICAL NORTH : FORT-DE-FRANCE -
PRÊCHEUR
The Route de la Trace is truely a botanical trail,
bordered with heliconia flowers and bracken fern,
taking you into deep into the tropical splendor of the
Martinican rainforest. The trail winds through thick
vegetation, and over tumultuous mountain streams,
all the way to Mount Pelée.
Balata Church is a miniature replica of the Basilica of
Montmartre in Paris. It was built in 1924, and offers a
panoramic view of Fort-de-France and its bay.
Experience a bit of Paradise in the Balata Garden,
where you can stroll among groves and flowerbeds
planted with a multitude of tropical species.
Take a break with a refreshing dip in the Alma River.
The pictoresque village of Fonds Saint-Denis is
decked with flowers, and it faces Mount Pelée.
Saint-Pierre, the « little Paris of the Antilles, » was
erased from the face of the Earth in three minutes
by an eruption of Mount Pelée. In 1990 it was
classified as a City of Art and History. Stroll through
the ruins and visit the Franck Perret Museum of
Volcanology, established in 1932 by Perret, himself a
volcanologist.
At this point you have a choice: You could
continue north along the coast to Le Prêcheur
or you could continue inland, northeast toward
Morne-Rouge and eventually to the Atlantic
coast.
If you take the route to Le Prêcheur, you will
discover the town’s superb beach at Anse Céron,
with its lovely alley lined with coconut palm trees
beneath the ruins of Habitation Céron. From Le
Prêcheur, you can embark on an exceptional six-hour
hike taking you to Grand-Rivière, on the Atlantic
coast at the extreme northern end of the island.
The route through the town of Morne-Rouge will
take you to Aileron, a point of departure for climbs
up Mount Pelée, where you can command views of
Martinique from one coast to the other.
THE CARIBBEAN NORTH
A succession of small inlets shelter pictoresque
fishing villages, where fisherman practice the
traditional pêche à la senne, fishing with nets. All the
while they’re engaging in singing and conversation,
which you’re welcome to join if the spirit moves you.
In Case-Pilote, you’ll find the oldest church on the
island, dating to the 17th century.
The Canton Suisse, a community in Morne-Vert,
has a rather evocative name. With reason! You’ll
understand why when you note the dramatic change
to steep alpine scenery.
In Le Carbet, you’ll find the Paul Gauguin Museum
not far from the spot where the famous painter stayed
for five months in 1887, with his friend Charles Laval.
THE ATLANTIC NORTH
The magnificent bay at Le Robert is dotted with lots
of islets and coral reefs. It’s a much sought-after
haven for sailors.
Just beyond Trinité is the fishing village Tartane on
the Caravelle Peninsula. The peninsula is embued
with the history of the Dubuc family, and here you’ll
find the ruins of the Château Dubuc, set within the
Caravelle Natural Reserve. The reserve also offers
some beautiful hiking trails.
From Sainte-Marie, take a detour to Morne des
Esses to admire the craftsmanship at the basketry
workshop there, visit the Rum Museum at the Saint
James Distillery, and the Habitation Fonds Saint-
Jacques. Ride on a small train through sugarcane
fields, a visual demonstration of the importance of a
crop that was—and still is—a major source of wealth
for Martinique. Stop by the Banana Museum. And
don’t forget to take a stroll on the tombolo. From
November to April, this sandbar connects the town
of Sainte-Marie to the adjacent Sainte-Marie Islet, a
natural curiosity caused by the tides.
In Basse-Pointe, visit Habitation Pécoul, built in
the 18th century and now classified as a historic
monument. There’s also the Leyritz Plantation, with
its Museum of Plant Figurines.
In Macouba, children engage in a spectacular sport
: Like novice sailors, they brave the choppy Atlantic
waters, floating on tree trunks
called flots.

At the far end of a green valley lies the peaceful
village of Grand-Rivière. Here is where the road
ends, giving way to hiking trails that lead to Le
Prêcheur.
Ajoupa-Bouillon is a charming flower-filled
village that is home to Les Ombrages
botanical garden. If you’re in an
athletic state of mine, you might
want to try climbing around the
Gorges de la Falaise.
THE CARIBBEAN SOUTH
The first stops in Les Trois-
Ilets are the Pottery Village
and the Maison de la Canne
(sugarcane museum). Then
on to the birthplace of Marie-
Josèphe Rose Tascher de
la Pagerie. An old servant
predicted that Marie-Josèphe
would one day become « more
than a queen. » The Pagerie
Museum, devoted to Empress
Josephine, is housed in a pretty stone
cottage on the former estate where she was
born.
For golf enthusiasts, there’s a beautiful 18-hole golf
course that seems to hover between sea and sky. It
was designed by architect Robert Trent Jones.
Take a small coastal road linking Les Trois-Ilets with
Le Diamant, and marvel at the breathtaking scenery.
The peaceful bay at Les Anses d’Arlet is much
favored by sailors and yachtsmen. From there you
can see the Rocher du Diamant, a pure marvel !
Take a look at Trou au Diable, a bay just outside the
village of Sainte-Luce.
The farming community Rivière-Pilote is home to
La Mauny Distillery, which makes one of the most
prized rums of Martinique. At the nearby Pitt Cléry,
cockfights provide some thrills.
The pride of Le Marin, seat of the southern
subprefecture, is the town’s 17th-century church. Le
Marin’s bay is highly regarded by sailors all over the
world for its excellent anchorage.
Farther south is the village of Sainte-Anne and
its famous beach, Grande Anse des Salines,
with its white sand, turquoise water, and alley
lined with coconut palms. The nearby Savane
des Pétrifications is a curious desert-like stretch,
and it’s easy to hike. On a clear day, you can see
the island of Saint Lucia and, with a little luck, the
massive silhouette of the island of Saint Vincent in the
background.
The coral reefs in the bays of Le Vauclin and
Le François are a paradise for skin divers and
windsurfers. At Le François, a visit to the Habitation
Clément is a must.

Martinique is proud of its cuisine, which is a reflection
of the land: exotic, varied, and colorful. Before sitting
down to eat, don’t refuse an aperitif of ti-punch: a
finger of white rum, sugarcane syrup and a
zip of lemon!

goat meat, etc. : The meat is prepared in a sauce,
made of spices, that originated in India.
All these dishes are served with local vegetables like
yams, root vegetables and breadfruit, or with gratins
made from cristophines or papayas.
Desserts :
Blanc-manger : Dessert made from coconut and
vanilla-flavored milk, with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Tropical fruit-flavored sorbets : Mango, soursop,
passion fruit, etc.
Digestifs :
An old rum is at least as delicious as an excellent
cognac!
If you’re a gourmet, ask for our list of « good tables,
» with the addresses of lots of restaurants where
you’ll be able to experience Creole or French cuisine.
Accras, pâté en pot, colombo, blaff, z’habitants
(delicious crayfish), stuffed crab...All these dishes will
leave you with delicately spiced memories. Seafood,
langoustines, conches, sea urchins and soudons
(Caribbean clams) are the specialties of many
Martinican restaurants, whose lovely settings often
add a note of enchantment to the meal.

Rendez-vous of Martinique
This is an initiative of the Martinican Committee of
Tourism to consolidate all the concerts, exhibitions,
and other events taking place between the months
of November and January. The point of departure for
Rendezvous of Martinique is the Semi-Marathon of
the City and Fort-de-France. (This is a non-exhaustive
list. Information is available at the Martinique Tourism
Authority)
» Today equipped with a sail, « gommiers » often
compete in the races held as part of patron-saint
celebrations.
The « yoles rondes » are entirely the work of
Martinican boatmakers, and all the materials used in
their manufacture comes from Martinique.
Teamwork, and the boat skipper’s perfect knowledge
of the sea, are the two essential conditions for
success on these often capricious boats.
Races are held all year long, but the highlight is the
Tour de la Martinique, in August, in which the boats
circumnavigate the island in seven legs.

Martinique has the reputation of being Paris’ shop
window in the heart of the Caribbean. Most imported
products have the label «made in France.» Some
of the biggest French and international brands
(perfumes, lingerie, clothing, watches, leather goods,
etc.) are sold in Martinique, as well as the creations
of Martinican designers. Non-local checks are rarely
accepted. Duty-free purchases are possible in certain
stores, particularly those in the bonded areas (beyond
the checkpoints) in the departure halls of airports, or
in Fort-de-France’s commercial port.

1/ What is the best season to go to
Martinique ?
Martinique is known as the island of « eternal summer. »
It is blessed with mild temperatures all year long. Even
the sea water is constantly mild, staying between 75
to 85 degrees. The famous « rainy season,» from June
to November, has nothing in common with the Asian
monsoons. You just have to wait for the brief heavy
showers to pass. Hikers during the rainy season may
want to take a guide with them, as some of the trails in
the north can become slippery. Those who love sailing,
or other water spots that require wind or waves, prefer
to come to Martinique from mid-December to June,
simply because it’s breezier then. You may have your
own favorite time for visiting, but there is never a bad
time to be in Martinique.

Martinique: One is to stay cosseted within the
island’s ample tourist infrastructure—luxurious hotels,
restaurants, golf clubs, yacht clubs—never venturing
out except on the rare group excursion. The other way
is to leave all that behind and really explore the island,
with its charming fishing villages perched on the green
hills that dot the island, or its northern mountains
crisscrossed with gorges, streams and waterfalls, or
the banana fields stretching along the coast.
5/ What are the major areas of interest to
tourists ?
Hikers love to go everywhere in Martinique. The same
is true for those interested in history and culture. But
visitors interested in swimming and other water sports
generally head for the southern Caribbean coast. Most
of the resorts are there, near the island’s most beautiful
beaches. Here are the major swimming destinations:
- Les Trois-Ilets and Pointe du Bout
- Le Diamant and Sainte-Luce
- Sainte-Anne and Le Marin.
- Trinité and Tartane (an exception to the rule,
located on the Caravelle Peninsula, farther north
on the Atlantic coast)
6/ Is it preferable to rent a car ?
2/ Where are the most beautiful
beaches ?
If you love idyllic beaches, you will be very happy in
the southern part of the island. The entire southern
coast is dotted with one sublime beach after another.
The southeast coast is protected by barriers of coral
reefs, so it has calm gentle waters worthy of the most
secluded lagoon. In the north, you can enjoy the blacksand
beaches of Anse Turin, near Le Carbet, and
especially Anse Couleuvre, near Prêcheur.
If you really want to strike out on your own to explore
the island, a car is a must. And it’s also a pleasure,
given that the roads in Martinique are safe and wellmaintained.
Those who can’t or won’t drive can always
hire a professional guide.
7/ Is there a varied selection of
accommodations ?
Lodging in Martinique is diverse, from Deluxe Relais et
Chateaux to quaint affordable B&B.
On the southern coast and in Tartane, there are hotels
of classic good quality, usually two- or three-star
properties, as well as the occasional four-star.
3/ Is the landscape a varied one ?
In fact, one of the principal assets of Martinique is
the amazing diversity of its landscape. Don’t think
that Martinique is only about sand and surf. The wild,
mountainous north is as much worth a visit as any
of the island’s beaches. Swathed in thick, verdant
vegetation, the northern interior is capped by the
towering peaks of Mount Pelée ( 4,483 feet) and the
Pitons du Carbet. This stunning alpine landscape has
been classified as a « regional natural park , » and it’s
a veritable paradise for hikers, nature lovers and those
who simply love beauty...
4/ Is Martinique a true escape, a real
change of scenery ?
The exuberant vegetation and sunshine suffice to
make Martinique an escape from the « same old, same

8/ Can you stay high
up in the mountains ?
Yes. Those who want to stay as close
as possible to the volcanic north can opt for
the Habitation Leyritz, the Domaine de Saint-Aubin or
the Domaine de Sainte-Marie. These are the few hotels
in the north of the island. Higher up in the mountains,
tourist accommodations are generallly apartments
or gîtes ruraux, rural self-catering places that you
can reserve through the Service Loisir Accueil of the
Martinican Committee of Tourism.
9/ What is the « Route de la Trace » ?
The « Trace » was built in the 18th century as a route
through the Pitons du Carbet. Anyone who does
not experience it will have missed one of the most
beautiful trails on the island. Sheltered beneath the
spectacular green canopy of the tropical rainforest, the
Route winds its way past the flanks of the Pitons and
the foothills of Mount Pelée. It runs a total of about 20
miles between Fort-de-France and Morne Rouge, and
is the point of departure for many other hiking trails. It
also offers several places of interest along the way, like
the famous Balata Garden.

original ways to
explore the island ?
There are specialists who
organize coastal excursions in
quads and guided tours in allterrain
bicycles, for half a day or a
full day. Some particularly fun activities
include :
- Exploring mangrove swamps and islets in a
kayak
- Flying over the island in a helicopter or a seaplane
- Guided trips in 4x4 vehicles
- Horseback rides
12/ Are there activities to get the adrenaline
flowing ?
Yes. You can go canyoning in the north of the island,
accompanied by a trained guide. And there’s kitesurfing
on the Atlantic coast, where there is more wind, from
10/ Is the island well-developed for visitors
who are fans of « green » tourism ?
Absolutely ! Of all the islands in the Caribbean,
Martinique is one of the few that has much to offer
when it comes to green tourism, thanks especially to
its volcanic north blanketed with a tropical forest—
unique in the Caribbean region. With its well-marked
hiking trails, exceptional canyoning sites, routes
off the beaten path for 4x4’s, horseback riding, and
more, Martinique boasts a wide variety of ecotourism
activities. You can hike just about anywhere, even near
resorts. There are 31 trails that are maintained and
marked by the National Forest Office. Some of the
best-known trails include :
- Canal de Beauregard, called the «Canal of

mid-December to June. There are schools and sailing
clubs that offer instruction in kitesurfing. Martinique
also offers adventure « hikes » across treetops.
13/ What is a yole ?
This traditional Martinican boat is made of wood, and
generally measures from 23 to 35 feet in length. In
the past, yoles were used as fishing boats. The yole
ronde is a boat with a shallow draft, and without a
keel, ballast, center-board, or rudder. It can carry one
or two sails. When on water, the yole ronde is balanced
through the use of wooden poles that transverse the
craft, sticking out well beyond its side. Crew members
climb out on those poles, riding above the waves. It
is quite a sight. The most important race remains the

16/ Are there any dangerous animals ?
There isn’t much to fear when it comes to animals.
Because of the tropical climate, you’ll probably come
across some harmless insects and small lizards from
time to time. For instance, there are lizards called anolis
that you’ll see on walls everywhere. You may see a
trap-door spider called matoutou falaise while hiking in
the forest, but they are not deadly. There are snakes in
Martinique, but they live far away from human activity,
and encounters with them are extremely rare.
17/ Can you visit working distilleries ?
Yes, because Martinique produces one of the best
agricultural rums in the world. Since 1996, Martinican
rum’s already high quality has been further guaranteed
by its designation as an ‘’Appelation d’Origine
Controlee» (AOC). The island counts some ten working
distilleries, most of them open to the public. A visit to
these distilleries will help you to understand the work
and skill involved in making sugarcane into sugar.

14/ Are there many kinds of water
activities ?
Windsurfing, water skiing, Optimist (dinghy) sailing, and
big-game fishing are all done in Martinique. But they’re
not the be-all and end-all. The waters of Martinique are
a great terrain for all kinds of sports and adventures,
so it would be a shame if you didn’t try something a
little more original. Keep in mind that safety standards
in Martinique are as high as they are in France. Some
examples of activities :
- Scuba diving (with air tanks)
- Snorkeling
- Circumnavigating the island
- Renting a sailboat with or without a skipper.
- Riding a Jet Ski
Fonds blancs are areas of coastal waters where the
sediments of sand have accumulated to the point
where they almost emerge above the sea’s surface. As
a result, the water inside the barrier is very shallow,
and so a pleasure to splash about in. The most famous
is the « baignoire de Joséphine » (the bathtub of
Joséphine), located in Le François. Legend has it that
Martinican-born Joséphine de Beauharnais, future
wife of Napoléon, liked to bathe there.
19/ Is Carnival a good time to go to
Martinique ?
Keep in mind that all activity on the island will be
geared towards the four days of Carnival, which are
all holidays. The preparations begin on the Sunday of
the Epiphany, with the election of the queens of the
carnival, and they continue until the eve of the first
Carnival day: Fat Sunday.
15/ Are there any beautiful colonial
houses ?
The most beautiful examples of colonial architecture
are to be found on the old sugar plantations, in the
island’s interior. These « habitations, » as they are
called, were built from the 18th century onwards by rich
plantation owners, so they’re tied to the most somber
period in Martinique’s history: that of slavery. Those
habitations that are open to the public will give you an
idea of what life was like in that era, especially if they
still have their original furniture and decor, as is the
case with the Habitation Clément, Habitation Céron,
Habitation Latouche, Habitation Leyritz and Habitation
Lagrange.

On Fat Sunday, the celebrations begin with parades
and parties that last until Ash Wednesday, when the
king of the Carnival, « Vaval, » is burned in effigy.
After the general merriment on Fat Sunday, the
following days have their own special themes :
Fat Monday : burlesque marriages
Fat Tuesday : red devils
Ash Wednesday : she-devil, and costumes all in black
and white
20/ Can you travel easily from Martinique
to other islands in the Caribbean ?
Yes, you can do so on cruises or through hotel
packages. Combining stays in several islands
can make for a diverting trip, and that’s why
Martinique’s central location is such a great
advantage. The most common practice is to pair
Martinique with Guadeloupe, traveling from one
to the other by plane or boat.
