While the mission of the instuon may be more
far reaching, master plans prepared for RSMAS
have focused on space allocaon and distribuon
within the exisng campus framework. Sll, the
1979 plan by Abramovits illustrates sound goals
for campus enhancement which have yet to be
realized. The following guiding principles are outlined
(Abramovits 11):
1. More efficient land use.
2. Non-interrupon of ongoing
research work.
3. Creaon of a collegial environment.
4. Separaon of pedestrians and
vehicles.
5. Compactness and fullest ulizaon
of working space.
6. Simplified administraon of
research.
7. Reorganizaon, updang, and
beer ulizaon of energy distribuon
and ulity systems.
8. Beer Resoluon of the parking
problem.
9. Provision for limited recreaonal
space and explicit definion
of outdoor space.
10. An architectural statement of
significance on Virginia Key.
1979 plan
At the heart of this plan was the intensificaon
of structure at the perimeter of the site which
would allow the center to be gradually unbuilt,
leaving a classic academic quadrangle with open
water as the fourth wall (figures 4,5). While the
Administraon Building was realized largely according
to the 1979 plan, the University is just
preparing to break ground on the second major
structure proposed by the plan. This would allow
for subsequent demolion of the older buildings
along the water.
