Approximately 10% of patients with multiple myeloma who<br />

received primary therapy that included high-dose dexamethasone<br />

achieved complete remission (CR) based on negative<br />

immunofixation; an additional 30% of remaining patients<br />

achieved CR with intensive therapy supported by autologous<br />

stem cells. Most centers have reported similar findings, with<br />

variations attributed to failure to require negative immunofixation<br />

in defining CR, inclusion of patients with only Bence Jones<br />

protein or “nonsecretory” disease where CR is difficult to define,<br />

and inclusion of patients intensified after one year when there is<br />

declining sensitivity of myeloma. Consequently, our analyses<br />

focused on symptomatic patients 75% reduction of serum myeloma protein production<br />

and >95% reduction of Bence Jones protein), conversion of<br />
