Brittle features like fractures form the back and lateral release surfaces allowing the rock block to detach from the rock mass. In this case, accelerated weathering enhanced the permeability of the of the sulfidic, graphitic schist layer surface contributing to excess pore-water pressure that probably triggered the rock slide.
