WORKSHOPS
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: TUESDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2013 | 9.00am ~ 5.00pm
Electricity Market Pricing and Trading
The Philippines’ Energy Regulatory Commission is planning to
introduce Open Access Retail Competition at the end of 2012.
The transition requires existing and new electricity market
participants (power producers, traders, retail electricity suppliers,
distribution utilities, regulators) to adjust to new pricing, trading,
contracting, risk and stakeholder management mechanisms.
Capitalizing on his experience and knowledge from UK and
Australia, our workshop leader will provide insights into best
practices for commercial strategies to survive and thrive, as well
as appropriate regulatory regimes to support the
introduction†of retail competition.
• The role of the retailer to match purchases and sales,
managing price and volume volatility
• An overview of risk management for retailers
• Risk sharing between generators, retailers and consumers
• The role of the wholesale electricity pool, and bilateral trading
of contracts and options
• Transitioning to Open Access Retail Competition
• The role of regulation to protect consumers and the integrity
of the market
• How the interaction of regulation and competition affects
market behaviour
private and public sector clients across Australia and New Zealand, as
well as in Asia, the UK, and the US, and has worked extensively on
national and jurisdictional market and regulatory arrangements. Much
of David’s most recent work has involved advice on energy pricing.
David holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours degree in
Computational and Statistical Science, and the degree of Master of
Business Administration (MBA).
POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: FRIDAY 1 MARCH 2013 | 9.00am ~ 5.00pm
Fossil and Renewable Power Generation Technology
The Philippines government has recognized the importance of
renewable energy, as a critical component of its strategy to
provide energy supply for the country. This is evident in the
power sector where increased generation from geothermal and
hydro resources has lessened the country's dependency on
imported fossil fuels. In the government's rural electrification
efforts, smaller scale renewable energy sources such as solar,
micro-hydro, wind and biomass resources are seeing widescale
use.
It is also clear that the Philippines will need to continue to utilize
cleaner fossil fuels, to support the strong power demand growth
required for economic growth. However, there are technical
challenges which occur as the share of renewables increases,
driving the need for more flexible fossil plants.
This seminar will therefore explore:
• State of the art advancements to improve operational
flexibility and efficiency in both gas turbine/combined cycle
and steam plants to support the integration of renewables
• The next generation of cost effective environmental controls
• The evolution of renewable technology to increase
performance and reduce energy costs
We anticipate a seminar with strong audience interaction and
dialogue to discuss the impacts of global technology trends on
the execution of the Philippines’ energy plan.
About Your Workshop Leader:
Chris Baliog, Country Sales Director, Alstom, Philippines
Alstom is currently the world market leader in both fossil and renewable
power generation technology. Its Clean Energy Strategy fully
complements the Philippines government focus on harnessing a
portfolio of renewable and fossil energy, working in partnership to
ensure affordable, reliable and clean electricity.
