Youghal Native Named
Craftsman Of The Year 2011
John Galvin who hails from Youghal in Co. Cork,
has just been awarded Craftman of the Year 2011 at
The Designer's Block Exhibition - London's Design
Week 2011. The exhibition ran from 22nd to 25th
September at The Farmiloe Building, in Coventry
and he showcased his new range of living room furniture
and lighting. The Manolo Lounger chair was
shortlisted in the furniture section of the Trada
Wood Awards and came up trumps for him this
week. The Trada Wood Awards is the UK's premier
architect and furniture competition celebrating
excellence in design in the world's most sustainable material. The aim of
the Wood Awards is to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding
design, craftsmanship and installation in wood.
"My inspriation for the "Manolo Lounger" came firstly, from my admiration
for J Wenger and Finn Juhl who in my opinion are the two greatest
chair designers that ever lived. Secondly, I stumbled upon a beautiful
sketch of a high heel shoe designed by Manolo Blahnik. The elegance of
the thin stiletto heel and feminine curve of the shoe inspired me to start
sketching chair designs. The back legs of the chair are therefore loosely
based on this sketch and led to the naming of the chair. The "Manolo
Lounger" is without doubt the most changelling but satisfying piece I
have ever attempted to produce. The "Manolo Lounger" was launched at
the begining of May in the Saatchi gallery London as part of the Collect
exhibition and in November the chair will be displayed in the
Philadelphia Museum of Art".
John Galvin, son of Frank and Rose Galvin is a cabinetmaker, craftsman
and furniture artist and brings with him over ten years of experience in the
design field. John was brought up in the lovely seaside town of Youghal
and is now located in Glasgow's west end, he specialises in the application
of traditional cabinet making methods to design unique pieces of
bespoke furniture that will intrigue and captivate.
Youghal Chamber of Tourism & Development News
At the recent Chamber of Commerce Directors meeting Youghal Chamber
President Mary O’Donnell commenced the meeting with a call to elect a
Company Secretary. The position had arisen as a result of the resignation
from the board by Diarmuid Keogh after many years of incredible service.
Tracy Kenneally operations manager at Aura leisure centre was proposed as
the New Chamber of Commerce Company Secretary. A number of other
issues were also discussed and include the following.
Green energy award for Youghal Town Council; Youghal Chamber of
Tourism of Commerce would like to congratulate Youghal Town Council on
their recent success of the recent announcement from the Minister of State
for Tourism & Sport, Michael Ring of the green energy grant of €400,000
awarded to Youghal Town Council for Youghal Leisure Centre to improve
access for people with disabilities, as well as a Green Swimming Pool initiative
to make the pool more energy efficient. This was no doubt a successful
result of the meeting with Minister Michael Ring held recently in
Youghal.
The Chamber particularly welcomes this news as tourism plays such an
important part in Youghal’s industry, and the improvement works to Aura
leisure centre will have a positive impact on local employment, and will
help to sustain and possibly create jobs. In the current economic climate it
is welcome news that Youghal Town Council are working hard to create a
more sustainable future for Tourism and Job creation for our town.
Tidy Towns; Youghal Chamber would also like to congratulate Youghal
Tidy Towns Committee for the fantastic achievement of receiving the
National Bronze Medal in the tidiest large town category, at the 2011 Tidy
Towns awards. This was an excellent recognition for all of their dedication
and hard work. The Chamber is again delighted with this news, as this
achievement is not just about removing litter, painting, and planting. It creates
local pride and positivity throughout the town, and plays an important
role in highlighting the natural beauty that Youghal has to offer. Chamber
Director and Member of tidy towns committee John Flavin commented that
“the efforts and commitment of the tidy towns organisation to improving the
overall appearance of the area has had a huge positive effect on Youghal”.
Pobail Scoil na Troinoide Awards; Chamber Directors agreed unanimously
to support the awards night which takes place in the school on Friday the
21st October. We are once again proud to be sponsors of the 2011
Pobalscoil na Tríonóide awards. As representative’s of the business community
of Youghal we understand the importance of acknowledging the
hard work of the students who have excelled in their abilities in post-primary
education. The chamber are delighted to support the award night as
these young people are the future of the town. Youghal Chamber member
businesses also support the local school, provide employment for students
each year and support the students’ work experience programme whenever
possible. Youghal Chamber directors would like to wish each student nominated
the best of luck and wish them every success in the future.
Walter Raleigh Hotel; A letter was received by Youghal Chamber from
Beechford Ltd detailing the intention to wind-down the business t/a Walter
Raleigh Hotel. This news was a devastating blow to Youghal as the Walter
Raleigh hotel has been providing a huge service to the town’s tourism sector
for many years and employed over 30 people. The letter was an invitation
to creditors to attend a meeting in the Vienna Woods Hotel at 12.15pm
on the 27th September.
Proposed Film festival for Youghal; Chamber Director John Hayes is
looking into the possibility of hosting a Film Festival in Youghal. As part of
this research John attended the Fastnet Film Festival and had seen how successful
it was. The general make up of such an event includes one venue
hosting a main feature film – the Mall Arts Centre was suggested as a venue
for this, in addition approximately 10-20 other venues would host short feature
films on a loop (possibly in any or all bars and restaurants separate
small rooms).
Youghal already has strong background with Film through Horgan’s Cinema
and the filming of Moby Dick in Youghal giving the suggestion of such an
event an authentic touch.
The proposal of such an event was welcomed unanimously by the Youghal
Chamber Directors; however there would be a lot of work involved in establishing
interest from the stakeholders required to make such an event possible.
Further information on the details of hosting such an event and the level
of interest from the businesses who would be willing participate and to support
this event is required.
Yughal Culture Night; Youghal Culture Night was held on Friday the 23rd
of September. Along with many other premises, Youghal heritage centre
opened its doors from 7pm to 10pm as part of the culture night to give visitors
and locals an opportunity to learn about the History, Heritage &
Culture of Youghal. The Chamber also created a printed brochure to advertise
this event. Youghal Chamber would like to congratulate all those who
organised and participated in making this event such a huge success.
Meeting with Youghal Town Council; Youghal Town Council invited
Youghal Chamber Directors to meet to discuss the following motion that
passed by Youghal Town Council
“In the interests of advancing new retail business within the Town Centre,
where an existing outlet has been vacant for a period of two years or more
that Youghal Town Council call on the Chamber of Commerce/ Youghal
Traders Association to initiate guidelines/policy among its members and
possibly all landlords within Youghal that such properties as mentioned
above would be made available at 50% of the current market value start up
retail business for a period of two years”.
“That based on such a policy being initiated as per 1) above that the town
Manager would facilitate (subject to proper certification) a 50% strike off of
commercial rates on such participating properties for a similar period of two
years”
A meeting between Youghal Chamber Directors, Mayor Eoin Coyne, Town
Clerk Liam Ryan, County Manager Patricia Power and Local Councillors
took place on the 12th July at the Mall House. Youghal Chamber President
Mary O Donnell welcomed the opportunity to meet with the councillors and
stated that the Chamber are happy to support the motion and to move forward,
to work together with the Council. The Chamber undertook to complete
a survey to identify current vacant and derelict businesses in Youghal
that have been vacant for more that two years, and to ascertain the reason
for the closure of this business taking into consideration that the reason why
some of the businesses may have closed may not be as easy to ascertain as
many business tenants may not want to disclose the reason for closure, and
that is not always feasible to rebuild some of the derelict buildings.
A pilot scheme for 2012 will be to identify Ten prospective Vacant/Derelict
properties within Youghal that fill the criteria as discussed in the motion
passed by Youghal Town Council.
Christmas Lights initiative; In 2010 Youghal Chamber offered business
owners an opportunity to purchase Christmas lights to be erected on their
premises at a subsidised rate to members. This initiative was very successful
and these new lights greatly enhanced the town and helped to promote
Christmas shopping & sustain local employment. Youghal Town Council
have again committed to erecting and storing Christmas lights for 2011.
Chamber Directors agreed to open this initiative to all businesses in the
town. President Mary O Donnell set a goal of ten to twelve extra Christmas
lights for Youghal for this year, which was widely agreed due to the realistic
economic climate at present. This figure has now been achieved for
2011. It is hoped to continue with this scheme for a number of years.
Munster’s Best party Venue; Congratulations were given to Perks
Entertainment Centre who were recently awarded 1st place by Primary
Times star Awards as Munster’s Best Party Venue. This is a highly coveted
award and is wonderful news for both perks and Youghal. A true recognition
of the long standing hard work and commitment that is involved in running
this exceptional business. Perks entertainment centre are one of the
town’s main employers and have been providing entertainment and jobs for
families in Youghal for over 80 years. This is a fantastic facility to have in
the Youghal, and attracts a large number of tourists each year.
Nu Shuzz & TV3; Congratulations were also given to Avril and Catriona
from Nu-Shuzz, who are one of only six businesses to have been accepted
to take part in a brand new retail makeover series S.O.S. Save Our Shops
show on TV3.
TV3 began filming both Nu-Shuzz and Youghal on Tuesday September
27th and this will be aired on TV3 before Christmas. S.O.S Save Our Shops
is a brand new retail makeover series on TV3 featuring Irelands very own
retail expert, Lisa Fitzpatrick. S.O.S. helps struggling retailers who are
attempting to stay afloat in the midst of a tough economic crisis.
Growing Your Business! Free Networking Event for Women in
Business; This very successful event took take place on 28th September in
Green Barn Garden Centre, Lifestyle Store & Cafe Bistro. This event was
part of the SECAD Catalyst project which provides opportunities for
women to build connections with other business women and aspiring entrepreneurs
throughout South & East Cork. The Catalyst Project in Youghal
was established in association with Youghal Chamber of Tourism &
Development. Chamber president Mary O Donnell welcomed everyone and
stressed the importance of networking for helping businesses to grow. The
event also provided an opportunity for women in business to publicise their
businesses by distributing their business cards, flyers and brochures.
Guest speaker Billy O’Connor, Managing Director of the Discovery
Partnership. gave tips on how to gather key pieces of information which will
help you with putting together your plan and to identify opportunities that
will help you grow your business.
The Discovery Partnership is a network of experienced, professional consultants
in Ireland working with SMEs and other organisations to facilitate
positive change and maximise the potential that exists within individuals
also help to identify possible new markets.

Gortroe Ploughing 25th Anniversary - Sunday 16th October
Field kindly donated by Joe Motherway, Clonpriest
In 1911 a ploughing match was held in Lyons's field since known
as "The Plough Match Field", Michael Flavin, Coolaha won a cup
at this event.
Mr. Hawks from Bandon travelled by train to participate in the
ploughing match and won in his class.
On Wednesday January 10th 1945 as a result of an agricultural
class held in Gortroe Hall a ploughing match was held in M.
Fitzgerald's farm, Wyndford, Youghal.
The committee were President M. Smiddy, hon. treasurer Maurice
Supple, hon. secretary John Kirk, members, Patrick Kirk, Cal
Flavin, T. B. Barter, D. McCarthy, M. Foley, Wm. Mariga, D.
Lyons, L. Sheehan, D. Motherway, D. Gleeson, D. Flavin. See
rule card for East Cork Ploughing Match.
In the late 1980's The Gortroe ploughing committee was formed
by a group of local farmers coming together. The organisers were
Chairman Kieran Mariga, hon. secretary John Keniry, hon.
Treasurer Tom Keniry, members, Tom Browne, John
Cunningham, David Gleeson, Tim Cronin, Danny Flavin Michael
and Billy Kirk, Peter Connon and John Smiddy. Having helped out
with the Imokilly ploughing match in 1986, Gortroe hosted its first
ploughing match on a crisp, dry November day in 1987. Over
eighty tractors took part in thirteen different classes held in Mrs
Cotter / Tom Browne's farm. A
huge crowd attended to show
their support to the event, thus
ensuring its continued success.
Some of the side-shows down the
years were tug of war, clay
pigeon shooting, threshing,
weight of calf, etc. After the
ploughing the teams adjourn to
Gortroe Hall for a meal prepared
by the local women. The prize
giving ceremony then takes place.
Over the years the ploughing has
been hosted by many local farmers
and is now an annual event,
which is well supported by local
business and the local community.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL
SHOWING AT YOUR OFFICE
CHRISTMAS PARTY
It’s that time of year again and the office party is looming. But
how do you make sure that one night letting loose with your work
colleagues doesn’t mean disaster on the career front in 2009?
Remember, just because your boss is footing the bill for the annual
team extravaganza, the Christmas party is still a business event
and we still have to watch our business manners. Here are 10 business
etiquette tips to survive the office Christmas party without
becoming the talk around the water cooler for all the wrong reasons.
Check the dress code – make sure that you dress appropriately.
The office party is not the time to wear an outrageous outfit –
unless of course it is fancy dress. For women especially, remember
that if you spend all year looking to establish your professional
credibility and get taken seriously by your work colleagues, you
don’t want to risk your professional reputation by your colleagues
and bosses talking about what you didn’t wear!
Get connected – the office party may be attended by senior leaders
in the organisation. Remember they are perhaps looking forward
to the party even less than you are. However one of the reasons
that many people don’t progress as fast as they would like in
their career is that they have little sponsorship inside the company
and they do not have an extensive network. Rather than spending
all night talking to your friends from your team, make the effort to
introduce yourself to the senior leadership team. Even your
finance director who said “bah humbug” about the expense of this
years party is more likely to become more affable when the party
gets going.
CHRISTMAS PARTY TIME

CHRISTMAS PARTY TIME
Know the format – some Christmas parties are also the time to
mark key achievements in the year and you might even find there
are speeches made and presentations given. Make sure that you are
aware of this before the party so that if you are one of the people
to be honoured, you have a brief thank you speech ready but
remember to keep it brief as your colleagues will want to get back
to partying.
Watch the clock – remember to make sure that you know the time
the party will be starting, and while it is fashionable to be late at
events and no one wants to be propping up the bar for hours on end
before anyone turns up, you certainly don’t want to arrive when
desert is being served. And as for the right time to leave the gig,
be careful not to get the reputation of Cinderella and be one of the
first to leave the party, but equally make sure that you don’t get the
reputation for being the last one standing at the bar at the end of
the night – unless of course you are paying the bill.
Take it easy on the alcohol – yes the company may be footing the
bill, but the office Christmas party is not the time to build a reputation
for being able to drink everyone under the table. Enjoy
yourself but be sure that you can remember what you did the next
day. And don’t forget to organise a taxi share – you definitely do
not want to risk loosing your driving licence through drinking and
driving.
Show thanks – at the end of the evening, do make sure you take
the time to seek out the people who organised the Christmas party.
They no doubt had to organise the event alongside a busy work
agenda and were probably nervous that everything would be
alright on the night. They will certainly appreciate the fact that the
party goers take the time to say thank you for all their hard work.
Follow these tips to navigate yourself through the season of good
cheer and you will be sure not to blot the copybook for your career
success in 2012.
YOUGHAL CONCERNED CITIZENS MEETING OCTOBER 2011
By Christy Parker
Some confusion persisted amongst the Youghal Concerned Citizens group
regarding remedial work to facilitate the re-opening of the Diving Rocks
on the Lighthouse Hill. The meeting was informed by chairman Jimmy
Flanagan that builder Gerry Dennehy, who had volunteered to undertake
the work to Cork County Council specification -subject to the necessary
materials also being provided- had secured the necessary insurance cover
to undertake the task.
However Youghal Town Council's September meeting heard that Cork
County Council was in the process of securing the estimated €21,000 to
conduct through tender. This appraisal was delivered at a time when Mr.
Dennehy's insurance cover had not been secured.
Some discussion ensued across several points; whether it was still relevant
that the YCC volunteer had acquired insurance cover, what time projection
the county council held as regards undertaking the project and
even if voluntary work on such a scale remained practical and acceptable
in the eyes of statutory authorities these days. One argument suggested
thanking Mr Dennehy for his offer and leaving the work to the county
council's process. Another line of thought proposed contacting the town
clerk for clarification and this was agreed.
Limited company
Further debate was conducted on the merits of assuming limited company
status and of registering a trademark. Chairman Jimmy Flanagan said
inquiries had revealed that the move would provide some protection to the
group for large events such as an enhance mackerel festival, but not as
much as had been hoped. The issue of using a trademark for marketing
purposes also brought conflicting opinions, while caution was expressed
about transforming what is effectively an all-embracing community group
into a company, even if only for the sake of asset protection and marketing.
Secretary Adrian Hyde said the issues of financial liability and matters
like insurance cover were being confused. It was opted to invite
expert opinion to the next meeting to clarify the situation in all its aspects.
No allotments
The question of allotments was briefly discussed, with confirmation that
the town council had informed the group that there were no allotment
spaces currently available in the town. From the floor and as point of
information, it was stated that a group that had sought allotments had
acquired €1,800 grant from Cork County Council. Youghal Comhaltas
had provided some limited space so they could acquire experience but,
having to "travel 10 miles out of town" to find a suitable patch, the group
was now fading.
Treasury, BEAG and Marketing
The group's finances stand at €1,082, following €309 spent on insurance
and €1,800 funding from Youghal Credit Union towards the upcoming
Halloween festival.
A letter from the Blackwater Estuary Action Group (BEAG) opposed to
the treatment of hazardous waste at Eras Eco, was read to the meeting.
The letter explained that BEAG was continuing its campaign behind the
scenes, with on-going contact with Bord Pleanála and with the EPA on
issues relevant to licensing and the company's Environmental Impact
Statement. It noted that Eras Eco Ltd had not yet applied for its licence
renewal. BEAG had also entertained a presentation of the Aqua Critox
technology intended to treat the hazardous waste and had been in touch
with SCFI, the manufacturing the technology are awaiting a visit to the
company's base in Ringaskiddy to further investigate the technology.
Posters and petitions were on-going and it was hoped to amass 10,000 signatures
opposing the plant's plans. In due course another public meeting
and possibly a street protest would ensue.
Marketing was next on the agenda. It was accepted that the summer's
'meet and greet' initiative aimed at tour bus companies had been a great
success. More tour busses had visited Youghal as a result and many others
had stayed longer, with passengers making their way onto the town's
streets. It had been a late-nurtured idea and plans for next summer were
now in progress to progress it further and hopefully to establish Youghal
firmly as a stopping point for the tour companies. The YCC marketing
section intended to compile video and brochure presentation for tour
buses, while also providing training programmes for those who will greet
the arrivals, of which there are currently about 20 volunteers.
Other marketing suggestions included targeting the Youghal diaspora
(preceding a similar initiative mooted by the Global Irish Economic
Forum in Dublin a day later!). It was agreed to seek a meeting with the
Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group ( YSDDG) to contemplate
a co-ordinated approach.
Halloween festival
Preparations for the upcoming inaugural 'Youghaloween Spooktacular'
are at an advanced stage, the meeting heard, with flyers and posters going
to print the following day. The secretary said the feedback from the public
and business community was thus far very positive. "Any clubs or
individuals participating in fancy dress -child or adult would be most welcome
and add to the occasion and to participate in the 3pm parade on
Saturday October 29th.
The packed schedule, covering three days, would include a headless
horseman riding down the main street, presentation on the Witch of
Youghal, a witch trail, treasure hunts, pumpkin competitions, storytelling,
fortune tellers and even a display of torture machines in Barry's Lane.
Many other attractions and novel activities would be included in what was
described as "a unique and big selling point" for the town.
Treasurer Ruth Lee asked that volunteers for the YCC collection day on
Friday October 28th. Anyone who can donate eve an hour of their time
can contact the secretary on 024-91355. The next meeting of the YCC will
take place on Thursday November 3rd in the Red Store at 7.30 pm.
Garryvoe Hotel Searches for 'Golden Couple'
Did you get married in the 1960s? We want to hear from you!
Model Mairead O'Farrell was on
hand today to pose as a 1960s Bride
to announce the Garryvoe Hotel's
"Search for our Golden Couple" -
the East Cork seaside hotel celebrates
its own 50th Anniversary in
2013 and wants to find a golden
couple to join in the party. And so
the hunt is on for any couple who
got married in the 1960's.
Stephen Belton, Managing Director,
The Garryvoe Hotel said, "We're 50
years in business in 2013 and to celebrate
this we are searching for couples
who got married in the1960s - especially those who got married in
the The Garryvoe Hotel. And we'd love to find the first couple to marry
here.
"We're asking anyone who did get married in the Sixties to get in touch.
And the winners will get a superb party for 50 people as part of our celebrations.
The competition is open to all couples but if we find couples
who held their wedding reception in the Garryvoe Hotel in the 1960s -
they'll win a secret extra prize.
"All you have to do is log onto our facebook page
www.facebook.com/thegarryvoehotel and enter into our fantastic
'Golden Couple' competition. Simply write a story on the theme '50 Years
of Smiling' and upload an image or video which represents this theme to
go with it.
"The Garryvoe Hotel first opened in 1963 and in that time we have built
up our reputation for excellence in weddings. To celebrate our 50th year
in business we are planning an even bigger competition in the next few
months with a huge prize which we are really excited about as well as
series of events over the next year in the lead up to our 50th Anniversary,"
he said.
IN THE SWIM
Christy parker continues his efforts to improve his swimming technique at
Aura's adult lesson classes.
Perhaps the oddest thing about re-joining Aura's adult swimming lessons
(Intermediate level) for the second of six night's lessons was discovering that
some of the stuff I had failed, depressingly, to master the week before seemed
surprisingly easier on my return. Minutes into the water I found that swimming
on my side, (although I can't think of any reason why I'd ever actually
want to do it!) or travelling on my back had become somehow manageable.
The lessons imparted by the ever-patient instructor Marcin must have become
ingrained in my subconscious and my body apparently rehearsed the moves
unbeknownst to me in my dreams. A couple of my fellow learners had a similar
impression. This was very encouraging for those of us whose ancestors
weren't dolphins.
Then Marcin got us to swim freestyle (forward) and turn, after every three
strokes, to take in breath. Under Total Immersion (TI) technique, breathing
doesn't mean lifting one's head out of the water, turning it towards the Capel
Island and gasping in a lungful as I had long believed and practiced. No, like
Trapattoni's 'leetle details' there is a lot more. "Hips, shoulders, head," intoned
the tutor as if preparing us for the catwalk.
Chancing the arm; One of the fundamentals of TI is the 'streamlining' of the
body, brought about by close alignment of the head with the spine, the toes
pointed downwards, the arms -when extended fully- more like sleek paddles
than say, appendages for carrying beer packs to the boot of a car. In imitating
a human spear, the whole frame more or less turns when the mouth takes in
air. Then you immerse the face in water again, take several strokes and repeat
the process on the other side. "Try to rest the head on the arm as you turn, like
so," demonstrated Marcin, appearing to imitate a man who had just fallen of
a very high building.
It was difficult to do this while continuing to kick water but, with belief and
practice, it works and works well. At the end of the night and having again
swallowed half a swimming pool, I had half mastered it. Spending another
half hour rehearsing the lesson would undoubtedly have been of great benefit
-but the sauna proved irresistible instead.
The following week circumstances decided me t to swap Tuesday for
Thursday night's session. In the course of the warm-up exercises - bit of freestyling,
floating from a wall kick-back kind of thing, you know yourself - I
learned another valuable lesson. Avoid eating a spicy curry dinner an hour
REFLECTIONS: Joi Bennett reflects on the past at mirror image 1960s Bride
Mairead O’Farrell
before going swimming; the indigestion was horrid.
This was to be a night focused on back strokes and the like and one I'd personally
prefer not to remember. In propelling oneself backwards off the wall
of the pool it is necessary to grab on with both hands and then position the legs
between the arms. This hunched position resembles a bat falling out of bed. It,
too, is very inadvisable after a feed of curry. For one moment I thought I
wouldn't need my legs to do the propelling at all!
Taxi!; By now I had somehow reached the stage where I could progress backwards
with my arms by my sides while surveying the rafters. I even 'back pedalled'
to the point where I hit my head off the wall of the pool such had been
my glorious momentum. I would very happily settle for this degree of ability
for the rest of my life and let the world of float by while I digested a lengthy
series of Tika Masala's.
Marcin had other ideas. We were told how to back stroke, each arm in turn
propelling us forward in wonderful rhythm, our heads well back in the water
and our breathing in sync with our movements. Instead I took on the
demeanour and behaviour of a half-naked drunk man hailing taxis, lost my
balance a yard out from the wall, keeled over sideways like an overloaded
dinghy and floundered to my feet as my swim cap made a beeline for my neck.
This amazing circus act was repeated about a dozen times.
At one stage I made it three yards down the pool before capsizing, only to suffer
foot cramp as I tried to re-launch myself. Meanwhile my three fellowlearners
appeared to have morphed into fish. At one point Marcin suggested,
"Chris you use the float for now," a direction equivalent to taking a pilot from
the cockpit and placing him three seats from the rear of the plane, strapped in
tightly. I tried to console myself that this pain and humiliation was all for my
own good, as many a psychopath in the teaching profession used to inform us
in years gone thankfully by.
Getting there…
Unbelievably, worse was to follow when we were requested to commence
manoeuvres by swimming on our backs with arms arched behind our heads.
It sounds simple, it looks simple and to me it was simply impossible. I swear,
I'd have hoped for the pool to open up and swallow me if it wasn't already
doing so.
But wait, with Marcin by now practically denoting all his efforts and patience
to me personally -to keep me from drowning presumably- I began to improve.
I suddenly wasn't sinking sideways in a spectacular splutter. I was getting better
and I hoped that the rest of the class could see it from the other end of the
pool, where I was intent on reaching someday soon as well. Then the half hour
was up and my progress stymied. Yes I should have stayed on to practice…. I
will next time -without curry.

YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB
Club AGM; Our Club AGM took place last Wednesday the 5th of
October at the Holy Family Church and It was good to see a large attendance
as numerous events for next year were discussed. On the night a
new committee was elected for the club which was made up of the following:
Sean Lawlor - Chairman, Jonathan Tobin - Secretary, Anthony
Kenneally - Asst Secretary, John Walsh - Treasurer, Wayne Fitzgerald -
PRO and Jonathan Flynn - Web Coordinator. Contacts details for all of
the Committee members are available on the club website.
Following on from our Mizen to Malin head spin which took place over
the June bank holiday weekend, interest was expressed about taking on
an event of similar difficulty for next season. All ideas are open for consideration
at this stage so bring what ever you have to the table at the next
meeting as planning for same will have to start as soon as possible.
The Winter training was discussed at great length and all were in agreement
about having the pace and distance lowered for the rest of the year
to encourage anyone looking to step up from the 10.00am group along
with any new members. The racing scene was also discussed and plans
are in foot for organizing a separate training group for those speed
demons. Existing and any new club members are also reminded that
membership fees are now overdue and should be paid as soon as possible
as same needs to be submitted to Cycling Ireland.
Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails; A number of club members are planning
to head to Ballyhoura for a bit of rough and tumble on the mountain
bikes on Sunday 23rd October. Anyone interested in traveling should let
one of us know by next week so that we can arrange times and travel.
Anyone who doesn't have a mountain bike can rent one on the day at
Ballyhoura. Keep an eye on the clubs Facebook page for more details.
Club Website Information about the club, cycling in the area and cycling
in general, can be viewed at our club website. It has to be seen by all at
Weekend Spins. As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin
every Sunday morning at 9.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by
the Clock Gate. This spin, which runs on various routes every week, usually
takes between 3 to 4 hours ( weather permitting ). Two separate
groups ride out at different levels to cater for as many cyclists as possible.
The pace is comfortable and we usually stop half way around for a
coffee or tea. A third group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday
morning at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock
Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes
around 2 to 3 hours to complete. The pace is again very comfortable and
this is an idle group for anyone interested in taking up the sport.
New members or visitors to the area are always welcome. If you have any
questions about the club or attending one of our weekend spins, please
contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 for details. See you
all Sunday Morning !!. Until next week, safe cycling !!.
KILLEAGH GAA NEWS
Lotto: There was no winner of this week’s lotto. The numbers drawn
were 6,33 and 37. Next week’s jackpot now stands at €3,800. Paul
BEST WILL IN THE WORLD WEEK
Monday 17th - Friday 21st October 2011
Cork people called on to have the
Best Will in the World
-60 Irish charities unite to appeal for more gifts
to be left in wills and solicitors will be available
for will consultations for €50 fee -
My Legacy, a joint initiative of over 60 Irish charities, has
launched Best Will in the World Week which will take place from
Monday 17th - Friday 21st October 2011. During this week, all the
My Legacy member charities are encouraging people to visit a
local participating solicitor to have a will drawn up or updated for
just €50 and to consider leaving a legacy to their favourite charity
in the will.
Through the Best Will in the World Week, people can get professional,
impartial advice on their will for just €50 while also helping
a favourite charity after they are gone. The charities are asking
for any gift, no matter what the size, as any contribution can
make a difference. My Legacy is made up of a diverse mix of
charities, including those which work in the areas of health, children's
issues, overseas development, social issues, human rights,
and animal protection amongst other areas. For more information
and a list of member charities and participating solicitors, please
visit www.mylegacy.ie.
Mr David Bell, aged 91, the oldest known practising solicitor in
Ireland, was on hand to help launch the campaign. Speaking at the
launch he said, "The Best Will in the World Week aims to make
the process of making or changing your will as easy as possible. I
would encourage people to make an appointment with their local
solicitor and help change a future today."
According to recent Irish research, only one in three Irish adults
make a will. Furthermore only 12% of Irish people indicate that
they have included a charity as a beneficiary in their will, despite
the fact that 62% of Irish people say they would consider leaving
a gift to charity in their will. Legacy donations are an extremely
valuable source of unrestricted income to charities. However Irish
charities only raise approximately 6% of their income from legacies
which compares to up to 40% in the UK. Indeed, many Irish
charities have never received a bequest.
Susan O'Dwyer, My Legacy Chairperson and CEO, Make-a-Wish
Foundation, also spoke at the launch saying, "People leave
bequests for charity for all sorts of reasons. They might feel compassion
for those in need, or want to help a cause in which they
personally believe or from which their family may have benefitted
or they might want to make a contribution to the community. The
Best Will in the World Week will give people an opportunity,
whatever their motivation, to make a difference to a charity that
they care about. It is also our intention to run this campaign on an
annual basis and build on it year on year"
The My Legacy campaign was established in 2003 to raise public
awareness of making a will and leaving charitable bequests in
wills. My Legacy provides unbiased, useful information to individuals,
charities and solicitors about leaving legacies to charities.
My Legacy is democratically run by all participating charities and
governed by a Steering Committee made up of fundraising professionals
from the member organisations. Please see www.mylegacy.ie
YOUGHAL UNITED CLUB NOTES
Report: Anthony Horgan PRO.
Munster Senior League Mallow 1-1 Youghal United 01/10/2011
Youghal travelled away to Mallow who are tipped to be one of the
favourites for promotion this season. A weakened away team missing four
regular players were up against it today but to there credit came away with
a great point. Patrick Durkin scored Youghal's goal after 40 mins from a
free kick. In the second half there was a mixture of fortune and misfortune
as Mallow got on level terms after 70 mins. Soon after that Youghals
goal keeper David Kearns had to come off with an injury and up stepped
Paul Kelly to fill the number 1 slot. Paul was called into action as soon as
he put on the gloves in the line of a penalty and to everyone's astonishment
he actually saved it…. (I'm not surprised Gerry as they forget you're
a football star too haha) Youghal had a number if scares late on but held
out for a valuable away point. Best for Youghal Teddy Cunningham ,
Brian McDermot and Paul Kelly.
Youghal United 2 - 2 Glasheen. 08/10/2011: The seniors recorded their
second draw in as many weeks. This was one of those games where you
could have won and lost in a matter of moments. Youghal found themselves
1-0 where arguably they could have been ahead. Teddy
Cunningham brought Youghal level before the break. In the second half
Youghal took the lead with another Patrick Durkin goal. After this
Youghal could again have stretched their lead but failed to do so. Without
any reason there seemed to be some panic or some uneasiness setting in
at the back line and some clearances were rushed and not executed with
conviction. Youghal paid for not putting the game out of the reach of
Glasheen when they had a tap in of an equalizer. Youghal were lucky in
one hand not to loose it from here and unlucky in the other hand not to
steal it at the end. So as I said at the beginning it was one of those games.
Youghal remain unbeaten and they will be a difficult team to take three
points off for the season. We need to be able to put teams away when we
are in control and get turn the 1 point into three. I suppose with a new
team again this year as every game passes they will grow and get stronger.
West Waterford/East Cork League Div 1. Glenview 0 - 6 Youghal
United 08/10/2011: Mark O' Connor scored twice in first half where
Youghal played some brilliant football .The away team tried too hard to
get the third in the second half but with 15 mins left substitute Trevor
Carey headed home. Substitute Paul Hennessy scored and Mark O'
Connor got his hat trick. Diarmuid Shuel got Youghal's 6th after a great
pass from Chris Hennessy. Declan Troy was outstanding on the day and
got the vote for man of the match. Team
Cork U19 Soccer League Youghal Utd 6 v Everton 1. 02/10/2011
Another scintillating display of football by the U19`s. Ardrath was covered
in fog and the ref Damian O`Mahony only let the game go ahead
when the lights were turned on. As with previous outings Youghal were
slow to settle, sluggish and 2nd to every ball. Again our defence were
solid and gave the rest of the team time to come into the game. When they
did we saw some outstanding play which resulted in 3 goals being scored.
The 1st was created by the excellent Bobby Donoughue who after a great
run laid the ball off for Colin Sheehan to score from the edge of the area.
Goal number 2 was the same but this time Aaron O`Connor scored. Goal
number 3 was the best, passing the ball from 1 side of the field to the
other. Aaron crossed for Jerome Glavin to score with a bullet of a header.
The 2nd half became in similar fashion and the home support were treated
to more of the same. Goal number 4 was a fine solo goal by Bobby and
was well deserved.Yves Sehoge(who was just running out of gas) blasted
home goal number 5. Youghal took their foot of the pedal and let Everton
in for a consolation.Ross Desmond who again didn't put a foot wrong at
centre back moved into midfield and from this advanced position scored
Goal number 6 with a rasping shot from 25 yards. 3 goals from outside
the box not a bad days work.Again all I can say is that this team play some
of the best football seen at Ardrath for along time. So the next time their
at home why not come along and see for your self. Best for
Killian O`Callaghan Jason Galvin,Bobby Donoughue& Calum
Phelan.Team; D.Cashman Killian O`Callaghan. Jason Galvin.Ross
Calum Gallogley. Bobby Donoughue. Jerome Glavin. 6 different scorer's
what would the odds be?
Under 15's Youghal United 2 -3 Richmond 08/10/2011: A game that
the Youghal lads will want to forget as despite having all the possession
and spending most of the game in the Richmond half very few chances
were created. Youghal started the better and took the lead with a header
from Connor Dempsey but that was as good as it got
for the lads. Try as they might they could not find their usual passing
game and conceeded 3 goals that were directly down to errors on the
Youghal side. Despite this Youghal finished strongly and when Padrig
Delaney slotted a penalty with fifteen minutes left it looked like Youghal
would get a result from the game. With the amount of possesion they had
on a normal day they would have at least got a draw but not today.I am
sure the lads will bounce straight back from this when they resume in two
weeks time. Man of the match Dara O Connell nearly grabbed a point
with a late run and strike but the keeper saved. James Skelly and Calum
Hogan came off the bench and were outstanding. Team : C Sheehan, A
White,A Nelrexhipi, A Clohessey. B Colin. D O Connor.H Oliphant,D O
Connell, K Cantillon, C Dempsey,P Delaney, Used Subs C Hogan,J
Skelly,A Donoghue.
Under 14's Youghal United 1 -1 Carrigaline: First half goal scorer
Fionn Cliffe earned Youghal a point in what was a very entertaining game.
Youghal tried out a new formation and this should be the way forward for
the season. Youghal battled throughout and hopefully this is the beginning
of similar or better results to come.
Under 12's Macroom 0 - 4 Youghal United 01/10/2011: These lads continued
their 100% record with a long journey away to Macroom on
Saturday morning last. Youghal found themselves 0-1 up at half time
when playing up front for the first time Kieran Daly scored the opener.
James Varney got Youghal's second midway through the second half
while Liam Moylan Ansbro added a third. Kieth O' Connor sealed victory
when he scored their fourth and it was Keith who got man of the match
with a fine performance in mid field. This bunch of lads are off to a flyer
and Scobie Heaphy rings me the minute every game is over to make sure
the result is seen in the Youghal News!!! I'm waiting to see if he is as keen
when and if they experience defeat…….. Well done lads great start!
treat with all who attended. The club would like to thank those who made
an effort to come out in support of Youghal United in these difficult times.
Feedback overall was very good and who knows we might be in a position
to get show 2 and show 3 back in the near future. Well done to Paudie
Sheehan & Emmett Perry who were the driving force behind getting the
show to Youghal. A big thank you to Joyce Hosford for her help on the
night and for making the mall arts centre available to us on such short
notice.
Membership: This is possibly the best year to date for having membership
subs in but there are a few from each team still outstanding. We will
be pushing to get the remainder in ASAP and there will be a list of fully
paid up members put up in the club house notice board in the coming
weeks. So if you have not done so please contact your manager with your
membership fees as the club will be forced to prevent players from playing
at weekends due to insurance purposes.
New Academy Kit: The club has organised a lovely new kit for all kids
and is excellent value at only €30. The kit includes jersey, socks and
shorts. The kit can be tried on for size at Sports And Leisure and orders
can be made there. Names and numbers on the back of the jersey will cost
extra.
from 25 euro per hour and there are some mid-week times available to
any group or club wishing to avail of the facility. The contact number is
Note!: Two new caretakers have commenced work with the club in looking
YOUGHAL GAA CLUB
SHOW THEIR APPRECIATION
By Derek Kiely
SUPPORT for the team ahead of the Cork County Premier Intermediate
Hurling Championship Final has been incredible from all areas of the
community and the Club deeply appreciates it.
There has also been fantastic support financially from Kevin Curtin,
Mackeys Central Star and Brookes Super Valu towards the kit sponsorship
for the team and last Saturday the club wanted to show their appreciation
to these three sponsors by way of a presentation of a new Youghal
Kit Bag and County Final commemorative jersey.
Club Chairman Dave Kilgannon said "The buzz about the town in the last
week has been fantastic, with an eight day turn around it focused everyones
mind immediately on the final and it has been a very busy and exciting
time at Youghal GAA Club. Finals are exciting and wonderful for
everyone in the town and the surrounding areas, but they are expensive
too and with that in mind I want to thank from the bottom of my heart, the
businesses and supporters for their backing. I would like to single out
Kevin Curtin, Noel and Kay Mackey and Ken Brookes his son Peter and
the Brookes family for their support in sponsoring our teams kit for the
final and the kit bags, it is a very generous gesture and we are very grateful".
Fé 13 Hurling Championship: It was great to see our boys line out to
contest the county semi-final against old rivals Sarsfields on Saturday last
in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. A very determined start saw us straight to business
with Killian striking over a fine point for the opening score. We challenged
every single ball in every position, but despite this Sars were able
to pick off some fine points from play. A push forwardwith a point from
Aaron, and Killian's goal and pointed free gave us a much needed boost
and saw us only four points down at the break .Sars started the second half
with a point and continued to put pressure on us in every area. We continued
to battle but were unable to secure the necessary scores and as this
half wore on we saw our opponents notch up the scores and at the final
whistle it was Sarsfields who had progressed to the final. Final Score:
Killeagh-Itas 1-4 Sarsfields 4-12. The Killeagh-Itas boys, though disappointed,
can be very proud of all their hard work and well done for reaching
this stage of the championship.Panel: Luke Fogarty, Eoin Fitzgibbon,
Fé 12 Parish Leagues: The focus in our Parish Leagues switched to football
this weekend, and we had four very competitive games on Sunday
morning. The Green Team, captained by Padraig McCarthy and managed
by Adrian, had a double victory, beating Sean Walsh's Red Team (managed
by John) by 3-0 to 1-3 and overcoming Daniel Hickey's Blue Team
by 2-9 to 2-4. Earlier, the Blue Team, managed by Brinsley Mac, had
pipped the Yellow Team captained by Sean Broderick and managed by
Paudie on a scoreline of 3-6 to 3-2. The Yellows got some satisfaction in
their second game by beating the Reds by 4-4 to 1-5. It's all nicely poised
now for the third round of games and finals on Sunday next, October 16th,
with all four teams still in the hunt.
Fé 8 Iomáint: Our Under 7's and 8's welcomed the young Magpies of
Midleton to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Saturday last. We had two very exciting
games, with little between the teams in both games. Our boys showed
great heart and skill, and got some lovely scores, to edge out our visitors
in both games. Well done to all our buachaillí óga, and to our dedicated
bainisteoirí Johnny and Adrian. The future is bright!
Note for all U-6's, U-7's and U-8s: Our final night of football for 2011
takes place on this Friday, October 14th at 5.30, where we will finish off
our season with some mini-leagues and a bit of fun and games. Bígí ann!
TARA O'CONNELL SUCCEEDS HER DAD
ON YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL
By Christy Parker
Tara O'Connell has been selected
to succeed her late father Tommy
on Youghal Town Council. The cooption
took place unopposed at a
special meeting of the Youghal
Labour Party in the Gate bar on
Thursday night October 6th.
Labour Party official George
Cummins oversaw proceedings
which were also attended by local
branch Secretary Sean Rush, party
members, the O'Connell family
and friends. Mr Cummins extended
his condolences to the
O'Connell family on Tommy's
passing last month following a
brief illness.
For Tara, 39 and the eldest of two
girls in a family of four children,
the occasion was one of pride
laced with poignancy. "I was very
proud to succeed my dad but very
sad he wasn't there to see it," she
recalls, "particularly as it was
something he always wanted for
me." In the event a prepared
speech she had scribed went
unread. "I just felt too emotional
when the moment came," she says.
Early influence
Tara traces her interest in politics
to an early age and her dad's influence.
"I remember canvassing with
my father when I was about eight
and loving the razzamatazz of it
all," she remembers. "I also had a
teacher whose dad was a politician
and that intrigued me also.
In time the issues and practice of
politics formed a driving force in
her life and she duly joined Sinn
Féin as had her father before his
transference to Labour. After many
years in SF, including a stint as
chairwoman, she again followed
her dad's footsteps, this time into
the Labour party. "I felt their social
policies better suited my own ideas
on social issues," she explains.
Much of her time in Sinn Féin
coincided with the conflict in
Northern Ireland and she remains a
Republican at heart. "I am delighted
to see peace in the Six
Counties," she states, "but I very
much support the goal of a united
Ireland."
Social issues; In latter times, as
Chair of the Save Youghal
Ambulance group, Tara has been
to the forefront of the fight to
retain an efficient ambulance service
in the town. There are on-going
negotiations proceeding on that
issue, she says" but we hope to
issue an update shortly."
On a broad level, Tara strongly
advocates fairness and equality
and would trumpet the cause of the
less well off, the disenfranchised
and the marginalised. "I feel that
people on the lower end of the economic
scale -the ordinary workers
and the unemployed- always take
the brunt of things and the latest
cutbacks once again exemplify
that," she states.
Her new role as town councillor,
Tara "will be following up issues
raised by father," including his
rent/rates reduction initiative and a
feasibility study into restoring drift
net salmon fishing on the
Blackwater. "But I very much
intend to make my own impact as
well," she insists.
Self help; The new councillor sees
Youghal's future best served by
self-sustainability. "Large industrial
investment is not going to come
here in the foreseeable future," she
believes, "so we must to rely on
ourselves. That's why groups like
the Youghal Concerns Citizens set
such a great example. We have all
got to work together to build a better
future. I believe at this moment,
tourism and heritage projects,
along with promoting and assisting
the establishment and development
of small, individual businesses,
offers our best options."
Pragmatically, she realises that
town councils have limited, everdiminishing
power. "That's why I
have always found it unfair that
some people automatically blame
the council when anything goes
wrong. Sure they make mistakes
like everyone else, but I think all
the councillors have the good of
the own at heart and try to do the
best they can within the limits
imposed on them." "
That may all change for better or
worse very soon. In about seven
weeks Environment Minister Phil
Hogan is set to present to the cabinet
his Local Government reform
proposals. Things are almost sure
to change and maybe change radically.
"We'll cross that bridge when
we come to it," says Tara.
Meanwhile she intends to make
every moment count on behalf of
the town that her late father loved
dearly and was staunchly proud to
serve.

LONELINESS AND ISOLATION FEATURES HIGHLY
AT YOUGHAL COMMUNITY ALERT AGM
By Christy Parker
Concern over lonely and isolated elderly people and was a prominent
issued raised at October's Youghal and District Community Alert meeting.
The occasion was also the group's AGM and was conducted in Cumann
na Daoine following the unavailability of the Walter Raleigh hotel.
Outgoing chairman Michael Beecher commenced proceedings by asking
Pa Forrest to deliver the treasurer's report, which showed a current balance
of €1,043.45 from an opening sum of €905.08. A Red Store coffee
morning with guest speakers had brought a debit of €120 while the annual
church gate collection month collected €1,042.35.
Crime report; Community Garda Peter Queally delivered the monthly
crime report, while deviating from previous practice in largely not identifying
specific times and areas. There had been just one theft from a shop
over the previous month and two general thefts and gardai had conducted
10 street drug searches of which there were three arrests for possession.
Six public order incidents were detected, three burglaries -one of which
was aggravated burglary- had occurred, alongside three criminal damage
offences and one drink driving arrest.
The aggravated burglary had occurred in the Quality Hotel at approximately
5.30 am on September 12th. The night porter had disturbed an
intruder, who launched a brief attack. Nothing had been stolen and an
investigation is on-going.
Garda Queally said October and November are prime months for burglaries
and advised that property owners take all common sense precautions,
such as securing doors and windows, keeping valuable possessions concealed
and also being mindful of elderly neighbours, etc. He described
how recently a local woman, 87 and accustomed all her life to keeping her
door open, was visited by two men. They demanded money and when told
she had none, asked for her bank details. "She was sharp enough to
change the last two digits," revealed the garda, "but it illustrates the danger.
A neighbour had seen the walk in but had presumed they were relatives
or something."
Underage drinking; The garda said Sergeant John Sharkey had
addressed the Junior Cert and transition year students, but nonetheless
there had been three incidents of underage drinking detected following
the exam results. The miscreants had been brought to their homes and
details referred to the Juvenile Liaison Officer for further pursuance. "It
was a busy enough night and the real perpetrators were those that
acquired the alcohol for them," he proceeded, adding gratefully that the
night had produced "no public order incidences."
New committee; Before new officers were elected, outgoing chairman
Michael Beecher thanked all who had participated in the group's work
during his tenure. He paid tribute also to those who assisted with
installing 21 socially monitored alarms lately, noting that willing hands
remained available to accompany the chief installer, 'Joe from Wexford,'
in installing the outstanding 10 alarms form the current tranche of 31.
Garda Queally proposed that food money for the installers should be provided
from the group's finances on such occasions and this was agreed.
Mr. Beecher further thanked outgoing committee secretary Kaye Curtin
and likewise treasurer Pa Forrest, regular attendees, members of the
media and the Walter Raleigh for its excellent co-operation in providing
meeting space.
The new committee was then elected, with Desmond Davis proposed as
chairman from the floor and elected unopposed. Des, as he is known, is a
Wicklow man resident in Youghal for over three years and is also chairman
of the Care and Repair project. Michael Beecher swapped chairs to
assume the role of secretary, again unopposed, while Moss Heaphy takes
over as treasurer from Pa Forrest.
Attendances; The first issue to confront the new committee came from
the floor when ideas were sought by which to attract greater numbers to
the monthly meetings. That attendances in recent months have been quite
small, is probably due to several factors; primarily the relatively low level
of crime in the area, people reluctant to travel at night to a meeting, especially
in bad weather and -according to the group generally- detailed
coverage from the local media addressing people's curiosity.
Following some discussion, it was decided that November's meeting will
be a morning session at the Red Store, with complimentary tea/coffee and
scones. It is hoped that the convenience of time and venue will entice elderly
members of the community to attend but also family members and
anyone with questions or concerns regarding any aspect of community or
personal security.
Alone, lonely and vulnerable There was considerable discussion on the
plight of what initiatives the group could make to address the issue of elderly
people alone and vulnerable. That there is a widespread, sad and
silent problem out there was evident from the testimony of those who had
helped to install the monitored alarms and those involved with the Care
and Repair project. Several spoke of the intense loneliness being experienced
by many people in Youghal in the latter years of their lives.
They described how elderly people, often ignored by their own family,
welcomed tradespeople into their homes as much if not more, for the
social interaction as for the work at hand. "We chatted over tea for a couple
of hours in her kitchen. There was no fire lighting and no television
on. She said that every day was just so lonely. It was heart breaking," testified
one speaker.
From the floor a woman said she had volunteered to join the Care and
Repair programme as a companion/assistant for the elderly during worker
visit. There was a waiting list however and she wondered how she
could become involved. It was explained that currently two tradespersons
attended a job but consideration was now being given towards replacing
one of those with a companion. The Care and Repair project was currently
mostly in need of drivers however so this would be a valuable asset to
bring to any involvement.
Re-visits; Garda Queally wondered if a re-visit system could be initiated,
by way of providing further reassurance and company for those who were
known to be alone and requiring more social contact. The idea was
accepted but underlying issues were further aired, including providing
identity details to reassure householders, recognition that many elderly
people would feel uneasy with visits from people they do not already
know.
The new chairman advised that commitment could evolve towards a task
that the group might find beyond their capabilities. It was decided also
that other sectors of the community might care to become involved in regular
visits, with possibly some transition students at Pobalscoil na
Tríonóide being encouraged to participate. All told, it was felt that
increased liaison between Care and Repair and the Community Alert
groups could be beneficial.
Community alert means alert community; A pivotal point was made by
Mossie Lynch, co-founder of the Community Alert movement in Ireland
and former chairman of the Youghal branch. He said 'community alert'
meant more than a group or committee being alert, "but," he asked, "is the
community alert to the needs of the people within it -their neighbours."
Mr Beecher, who had assisted in the installation of the monitored alarms,
remarked on how delighted the recipients were, often regarding the reassuring
devise as akin to having company in the house. He further reflected
that the satisfaction was mutual, his point echoed by others, who
agreed that chatting to the more senior members of the community was
usually both educational and entertaining. The issue will be revisited at
November's meeting, which will be held in the Red Store at 11 am. Guest
speakers may attend and if so details will be announced in due course.
Note: Application forms for personally monitored and fire alarms are
available on-going through committee members, Community Garda Peter
Queally and at Youghal garda station (024-92200).
And your picture in a frame,
Your memory is our keepsake,
With which we’ll never part,
God has you in his keeping,
We have you in our hearts,
We shed tears for what may
have been,
A million times we’ve cried,
If love alone could have saved
you,
You never would have died,
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we loved you still,
Our Son and Brother,
In our hearts you hold a place,
No one can ever fill,
Always in our thoughts,
Forever in our hearts.
IRELAND'S FIRST CHILDREN'S HOSPICE
FINALLY A REALITY
-LauraLynn House officially opened by
President of Ireland, Mary McAleese-
Ireland's first children's hospice, LauraLynn House was officially opened
recently by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese at the Children's
Sunshine Home, Dublin.
After seven years of tireless fundraising by both the Children's Sunshine
Home and the former LauraLynn Hospice Foundation, the country's first
children's hospice is now a reality. The €5.5m required to build and fit-out
the House was raised entirely through fundraising.
The Children's Sunshine Home cares for children (from birth to 18 years)
with life limiting conditions and their families by providing high quality
transitional care, home support, respite, crisis and end-of-life care.
LauraLynn House will provide these services in a unit designed and built
specifically for this purpose.
The house has eight bedrooms, each with an en-suite facility and comfortable
living accommodation. Four family suites will enable families to
come and stay and be near their child when visiting the Children's
Sunshine Home. The House also includes a quiet room, meeting room and
multisensory playrooms, bathroom and garden. The Butterfly Suite will
provide a "resting place" for the child and family after the child has
passed away.
President of Ireland, Mary McAleese said 'Nothing and no one can make
easy the experience of the illness, dying and death of a child. The loss of
a child is utterly life-altering but there are ways in which some of the
dread, some of the fear, some of the awful loneliness can be assuaged.
That is what LauraLynn House exists for. It is our first hospice devoted to
the very specific needs of very sick and dying children. Here, dying children
who cannot remain at home can spend their final days surrounded by
familiar possessions and faces, in a home from home environment, away
from the impersonal and often intimidating world of a hospital ward.'
A needs assessment completed by the Children's Sunshine Home and the
Irish Hospice Foundation in 2010 found that there were 749 children with
life limiting conditions in Dublin-Mid Leinster and Dublin North-East. It
is estimated that 411 of these children have an active palliative care
requirement in 2011 and that this number is set to increase to 479 children
by the year 2021.
Philomena Dunne, CEO Children's Sunshine Home said, "This is a
momentous day for the Children's Sunshine Home, our families, supporters
and all other families across the country. We aim to put life into a
child's day and to care for all the family in times of difficulty. We are ever
grateful for the tremendous support we have received over the years and
hope people will continue to support the Children's Sunshine Home so
that we may reach out to more families in need, here and in their homes."
The Children's Sunshine Home's highly specialised inter-disciplinary
team works in partnership with families and hospital and community
teams to ensure ongoing support and care is provided for all children. The
specialised team includes a Consultant Paediatrician, Nursing Team,
Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Dietician, Social Worker and
Speech & Language Therapist, Chaplain and countless generous volunteers
support the family and staff of the Children's Sunshine Home.
Discussing the highly specialised needs of children with life limiting conditions,
Dr. Joanne Balfe, Consultant Paediatrician, Children's Sunshine
Home said, "At LauraLynn House we will work with families and hospitals
to develop the best treatment care plans for their children be that for
transitional, respite or end of life care. Whilst caring for a sick child we
are always conscious of their physical, emotional and spiritual needs and
those of their families. This is why having onsite accommodation for parents
and siblings is so important."
"The development of LaruaLynn House and our transitional care programme
will fill a void in your health system by providing specialist
respite and transitional care services to children from birth. This will be
the first such facility able to care for children with such complex medical
needs. Early referral of children to us will enable children to get home at
the earliest possible stage and will in turn alleviate beds in the children's
hospitals."
The Children's Sunshine Home strives to provide a "home from home"
atmosphere for all families and the two-storey house designed by Gilligan
Architects Ltd stays central to this. Covering an area of 1,300 sq metres,
the house is as far from a typical hospital setting as is possible, with hardware
and medical equipment discreetly stored and colour, warmth and
light in abundance. Geothermal pumps, solar panels and extensive levels
of thermal and acoustic insulation are also in use.
The eight children's rooms in LauraLynn House have been fitted with
bedside integrated clinical and multimedia entertainment systems, donated
by Lincor Solutions. The specially designed bedside computers will
provide children and their families with intuitive access to TV, games and
Internet. They will also allow clinical staff to review electronic medical
records, make real-time updates, manage treatment plans, and record
observations when they are at the bedside.
Jane McKenna and husband Brendan formed the LauraLynn Hospice
Foundation in 2001 after they lost both of their precious daughters Laura
and Lynn in the space of just two years. In 2007, the Children's Sunshine
Home and the LauraLynn Hospice Foundation joined forces. Speaking at
today's event, Jane said "It is wonderful to see this dream come to
fruition, and our huge thanks to so many amazing people, giving of their
time and generosity, throughout the years. Laura and Lynn will be very
happy that something so joyful has come, as a result of their short lives
and our sad loss."
The opening of LauraLynn House is the welcome beginning of the development
of a comprehensive community support service for children with
Life Limiting Conditions. The Children's Sunshine Home plans to extend
this service into homes to support children and their families with both inhome
and out-of-home respite care in keeping with National Policy in
Children's Palliative Care.
There are approximately 350 child deaths and more than 1,400 children
living with life limiting or threatening conditions in Ireland each year.
There are currently 45 children's hospices in the UK.
KILLEAGH CAMOGIE CLUB
The club has had many highs and lows over the years but these past weeks
have surely been some of the lowest that we can remember. Loosing
someone to death is always hard but when that person is young makes it
all the harder. On Thursday Sept 29th Shelly Fennelly (ne.Spillane) lost
her long battle with illness and passed peacefully to her eternal reward.
Shelly was the daughter of Club president Sheila Spillane and sister of
Mary Motherway who both work tirelessly with the club. Shelly herself
played for Killeagh for many years and was a member of our 1980 All
Ireland Club Championship Team. She also wore the red and white for
Cork on many occasions.
Our thought and prayers are with J.J., Claire, Kevin, Sheila, Mary, Con
and the extended family at this time.
I would like everyone to consider seriously carrying an organ donor card.
While this didn't work for Shelly there are many others for whom the
receipt of a long awaited organ has transformed their own and their family's
lives.
May she rest in peace.
WOOD BURNING STOVES
Ask most anyone what they
think about woodburning
stoves and the first words
out of their mouth are likely
to include something about
looking and feeling good.
We're drawn by some basic
instinct to the warmth and
comfort of a real fire, and if
it's a fireplace set behind
safe glass doors that keep
out the smoke and mean an
end to cleaning out the
grate, so much the better.
In fact, it's not unusual to
find people installing a
wood burning stove that
they don't actually need as
such (for heating), but that
they want as a centrepiece in
their lounge or kitchen.
How many times have you
seen an Aga decoratively dissipating heat right next to a regular oven and
hob? People naturally gather round woodburning stoves and kitchen
range cookers - the same cannot be said for gas boilers and electric cookers.
Not Just A Pretty Face.
So, we like our homes to feel warm and inviting, and woodburning
stoves tick the box. But woodburner offer more than eye-candy and feelgood
factor. Modern wood burning stoves are able to accommodate a
boiler, provide full cooking capabilities and be fully automated.
Many woodburning stoves can be fitted with a back boiler supplying hot
water to radiators and the main hot water cylinder. Some, such as the
Rayburn, are designed as a kitchen range with a full sized oven and double
hob plus an integral boiler where a second oven would normally go.
Systems intended primarily as woodburning boilers typically incorporate
an automatic wood pellet fuel hopper and comprehensive timing controls,
requiring virtually no intervention. Highly versatile? Tick.
It's The Utility Bill
In recent years, as gas and electricity prices have relentlessly soared,
word has gotten out that those strange woodburning stove things are not
only capable of providing a complete hot water and domestic heating
system, but they're a heck of a lot cheaper to run than conventional heating
systems. Modern woodburners are highly efficient thanks to
improvements in manufacturing processes, quality materials and better
understanding of airflow and combustion. Also, wood logs and manufactured
wood pellets are essentially waste material, and therefore plentiful
and cheap. That'll be a tick for economy then.
Follow The Carbon Footprints.
Everyone is now aware that fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) are a one way
street where Carbon Dioxide is concerned. Fill your car with petrol and
go for a spin - after a while the petrol will be gone and there will be more
CO2 heading for the ionosphere. Do this enough and eventually there
won't be any petrocarbons left to turn into petrol; meanwhile the atmosphere
will be saturated with CO2 from all that was burned before.
Compare this with burning wood. Yep, it too releases CO2, but unlike oil
we can grow more wood by simply planting new trees. The beauty of this
is that each new tree we plant will re-absorb exactly as much CO2 as is
released by burning the wood from a dead tree. In fact, a dead tree will
give its CO2 back to the air whether it's burned or left to rot, so using it
as biofuel is no more harmful than doing nothing at all.
But it gets better still. Trees take a long time to grow, so you can't cut
down one this year and expect its replacement to be ready next year. The
timescale is more like a decade or more, which means you need to have
a whole lot more trees constantly maturing and absorbing CO2 than are
ever being burned.
Also, commercially manufactured wood pellets and wood chips are
made from recycled waste. Wood pellets are in fact compressed waste
sawdust. So, we can tick renewable and recyclable - it's getting hard to
see what's not to like where contemporry wood burning technology is
concerned.
