NON-CREDIT ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE<br />

AENG 10.2 ESL LOW BEGINNING READING AND<br />

WRITING – Units: 0.0<br />

This class is for people who do not read or write any<br />

English. It will focus on basic reading and writing skills.<br />

Students will learn to read and fill out everyday forms,<br />

such as job applications. They will learn the alphabet,<br />

basic vocabulary and spelling rules, and also basic<br />

grammar.<br />

AENG 10.3 ESL HIGH BEGINNING SPEAKING AND<br />

LISTENING – Units: 0.0<br />

This class continues from AENG 10.1. It is for people<br />

who speak and understand a little English. Students will<br />

continue to learn new vocabulary and sentence patterns<br />

useful in everyday situations.<br />

AENG 10.4 ESL HIGH BEGINNING READING AND<br />

WRITING – Units: 0.0<br />

This class continues from AENG 10.2. It is for people<br />

who read and write a little English. Students will<br />

continue to develop reading and writing skills useful for<br />

everyday situations, such as reading advertisements<br />

and finding and using sources of information.<br />

AENG 10.4A REVIEW CLASS FOR ESL BEGINNERS<br />

– Units: 0.0<br />

This class is for people who completed beginning level<br />

English (AENG 10.1-10.4). Students practice reading,<br />

writing, listening, and speaking skills that they have<br />

already learned. The class focuses on practical,<br />

everyday situations such as shopping and work<br />

situations.<br />

AENG 10.5 ESL LOW INTERMEDIATE SPEAKING<br />

AND LISTENING – Units: 0.0<br />

This class continues from AENG 10.3. It is for people<br />

who already speak and understand English fairly well. In<br />

this class students will also learn more sentence<br />

structure and grammar useful in a variety of everyday<br />

speaking and listening situations. Students will also be<br />

introduced to non-verbal communication, as well as<br />

certain idiomatic expressions. There will be a strong<br />

emphasis on simulation and role play.<br />

AENG 10.6 ESL LOW INTERMEDIATE READING<br />

AND WRITING – Units: 0.0<br />

This class continues from AENG 10.4. It is for people<br />

who already speak and understand English fairly well.<br />

Students in this class will continue to develop reading<br />

and writing skills in English. They will continue learning<br />

grammar and spelling rules, and will write at the<br />

sentence level. They will learn to read and respond to<br />

simple stories and news articles, and other common<br />

forms of written material, such as instructions and<br />

simple warranties.<br />

AENG 10.7 ESL HIGH INTERMEDIATE SPEAKING<br />

AND LISTENING – Units: 0.0<br />

This class is for people who already speak and<br />

understand English enough to describe everyday<br />

situations, problems, and needs. In this class students<br />

will learn more advanced vocabulary, idiomatic<br />

expressions, sentence structure, and grammar needed<br />

in a variety of specific everyday speaking and listening<br />

situations. There will be continued emphasis on<br />

simulation and role play.<br />

AENG 10.7A ESL INTERMEDIATE SPEAKING I –<br />

Units: 0.0<br />

This class is for people who already speak and<br />

understand English enough to describe familiar<br />

situations, problems, and needs. In this class students<br />

will learn more advanced vocabulary, idiomatic<br />

expressions, sentence structure, and grammar needed<br />

in a variety of communicative situations. Students<br />

develop speaking and listening skills needed for<br />

success in work and education.<br />

AENG 10.7B ESL INTERMEDIATE SPEAKING III –<br />

Units: 0.0<br />

This class continues from AENG 10.7A. It focuses on<br />

English needed for specific formal situations at school<br />

and work such as expressing agreement/disagreement<br />

and confronting, and job interviews.<br />

AENG 10.10 INTERMEDIATE WRITING II – Units: 0.0<br />

This class continues from AENG 10.8. Students write<br />

compositions on familiar and unfamiliar topics, read<br />

short stories, and learn more advanced grammar. This<br />

course is useful in preparation for the GED and for<br />

college-level writing courses.<br />

AENG 10.13A LOW INTERMEDIATE READING AND<br />

VOCABULARY – Units: 0.0<br />

A reading course for low intermediate ESL students<br />

emphasizing main ideas, outlining, and vocabulary in<br />

context. Students should already have basic skills in<br />

decoding information and understanding at a literal<br />

level. They should be able to read and understand<br />

short, authentic texts such as letters and instructions.<br />
