RLST 111 RELIGIONS OF SOUTH AND EAST ASIA<br />

Survey of the history, beliefs, and practices of the major<br />

religions of East and South Asia: Hinduism, Buddhism,<br />

Jainism, Sikhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto.<br />

Discussion of modern challenges to traditional religion<br />

and the emergence of new religious movements<br />

inspired by Asian traditions.<br />

RLST 113 RELIGION AND SOCIETY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. (No prerequisite.<br />

Recommended preparation: ENGL 50 or eligibility for<br />

ENGL 101.0 is recommended.)<br />

Study of the interaction between social forces and<br />

religious belief and practice, with an emphasis on<br />

contemporary American social and religious life. Special<br />

topics include the social aspects of evangelical religion,<br />

the interaction of religion and politics, the relation<br />

between religion and gender, and the impact of<br />

globalization.<br />

RLST 115 RELIGION IN AMERICA<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite. Recommended preparation: Eligibility for<br />

ENGL 101.0)<br />

Historical study of religion in America, including both its<br />

diversity and unifying factors. Major topics include<br />

Native American religion, Judaism, Roman Catholicism,<br />

Protestantism Christianity, African-American religion,<br />

American sects, metaphysical and occult religions,<br />

Asian religions, and religious dimension of public life,<br />

politics, and popular culture.<br />

RLST 117 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite. Recommended preparation: Eligibility for<br />

Introduction to major topics in the philosophy of religion:<br />

the existence and nature of God, the nature and<br />

possibility of religious knowledge, the meaning of<br />

religious language, and concepts of immortality and<br />

human destiny. Special attention is given to conflicts<br />

between religion and science, competing claims for<br />

religious truth, the feminist critique of traditional religion,<br />

and the relevance of religion to social ethics.<br />

RLST 207 INTRODUCTION TO CRITICAL THINKING<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU,UC. (Prerequisite:<br />

ENGL 101.0 or ENGL H101)<br />

Study and practice in critical thinking and advanced<br />

English composition: analysis, evaluation, and<br />

formulation of arguments; critical study of texts; and<br />

composition of critical essays. Application of critical<br />

thinking and writing skills to topics in the areas of values<br />

RESPIRATORY THERAPY<br />

Respiratory therapy is an allied health profession<br />

specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of<br />

patients suffering from cardiopulmonary disease.<br />

The program provides didactic instruction and<br />

supervised clinical practice in Inland Empire hospitals.<br />

Graduates of the VVC Respiratory Therapy Program, as<br />

a result of the education and training they receive, pass<br />

the state licensing and national registry exams at a rate<br />

much greater than the national average. The <strong>Victor</strong><br />

<strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong> Respiratory Therapy Program is<br />

accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for<br />

Respiratory Care (www.coarc.com), 1248 Harwood<br />

Separate application must be made to the Respiratory<br />

Therapy Program. Seating is limited to a maximum of<br />

twenty-five students per class.<br />
