POLITICAL SCIENCE<br />
will canvass the “great ideas” that have connected<br />
human civilizations and the processes which have<br />
initiated and continued the process of globalization.<br />
Topics include the cultural, economic, historical, political<br />
and religious effects of globalization.<br />
POLS 110 CONTEMPORARY WORLD AFFAIRS<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite)<br />
An introduction to the analysis of the historical<br />
development and contemporary setting of political<br />
relations between and among nation-states, transnational<br />
movements, and international organizations.<br />
Introduces the analytical approaches to the study of<br />
world affairs and theories of international conflict and<br />
cooperation. Explores the variety of governmental and<br />
non-governmental entities on the world stage today,<br />
their foreign policy goals and interests, and instruments<br />
and uses of power. Examines contemporary issues<br />
confronting the global community and the historical<br />
development and uses of international law and<br />
organizations.<br />
POLS 112 COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT<br />

prerequisite)<br />
An introduction to the comparative analysis of<br />
contemporary political systems and their environments<br />
around the world. Examines current political institutions,<br />
citizen participation, political problems, politics, and<br />
policies within these systems. Emphasis is given to<br />
selected nation-states in order to provide a broader,<br />
representative knowledge encompassing a variety of<br />
modern political systems and environments reflecting<br />
the geographic regions of the world.<br />
POLS 113 POLITICS OF THE MIDDLE EAST AND<br />
NORTH AFRICA<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite. Grade option)<br />
This course will examine the Middle East and North<br />
Africa through a comparative politics perspective. This<br />
will include an examination of the following items: an<br />
overview of the region’s histories, geographies, peoples,<br />
cultures, religions and languages; the fundamentals of<br />
the Islamic and Judaic belief systems; current events<br />
such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the War in Iraq<br />
and other real potential geopolitical conflicts.<br />
POLS 114 POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC (No<br />
prerequisite)<br />
A survey of political theory and major figures in the<br />
history of political philosophy. Questions concerning the<br />
role of government, natural rights and the relationship<br />
between government and the individual will be explored<br />
by evaluating the works of philosophers such as Plato,<br />
Aristotle, Locke and Marx.<br />
POLS 120 LEADERSHIP<br />
Units: 2.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 15 hours laboratory.<br />

This course is designed for any student interested in<br />
leadership within an organization. The course will assist<br />
students interested in campus leadership positions to<br />
identify effective leadership characteristics and their role<br />
in institutional maintenance and change. Focus will<br />
include (but is not limited to) developing leadership<br />
styles, needs assessment, policy, finance, public<br />
speaking, parliamentary procedure, comparative forms<br />
of collegial governmental process, communication skills,<br />
program, development and evaluative methods.<br />

POLS 130 INTRODUCTION TO PARALEGAL<br />
STUDIES<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (No prerequisite)<br />
Students will learn the nature of the career field, the<br />
skills and knowledge required, the ethical requirements,<br />
the background in court systems, and the legal research<br />
and writing that are necessary for success in the<br />
profession. The emphasis is placed on functions of a<br />
paralegal within a private law firm, within a government<br />
agency, as a business owner, and as a litigation<br />
assistant. CSU.<br />
POLS 131 FUNDAMENTALS OF LITIGATION FOR<br />
PARALEGALS<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. (No prerequisite)<br />
This course examines the intricate working of the<br />
American court system and the role of the paralegal in<br />
litigation practice. This course will focus on the process<br />
that begins with the client interview, extends through the<br />
filing, develops into the discovery state, takes final<br />
shape in the trial stage and ends with enforcement of a<br />
judgment. Critical analysis of statutory and judicial rules<br />
for the conduct of litigation will be used extensively to<br />
provide a strong foundation for operating within the legal<br />
field.<br />
