PHIL 101 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY<br />

prerequisite. Recommended preparation: ENGL 50 or<br />
eligibility for ENGL 101.0.)<br />
Introduction to the field of philosophy through a<br />
discussion of enduring questions about the nature of<br />
existence, knowledge, and value.<br />
PHIL 108 CONTEMPORARY MORAL ISSUES<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite. Recommended preparation: ENGL 50 or<br />
eligibility for ENGL 101.0.)<br />
Critical study of major ethical theories and their<br />
application to contemporary moral issues in bio-medical<br />
practice, law and violence, sexuality, social and<br />
economic justice, the environment, and business<br />
conduct.<br />
PHIL 109 INTRODUCTION TO LOGIC<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite.)<br />
Introduction to the principles and practice of reasoning:<br />
argument analysis and evaluation, induction, deduction,<br />
fallacies, categorical logic, propositional logic.<br />
Assignments require use of the computer.<br />
PHIL 114 POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite. Recommended preparation: Eligibility for<br />
ENGL 101.0.)<br />
A survey of political theory and major figures in the<br />
history of political philosophy. Questions concerning the<br />
role of government, natural rights and the relationship<br />
between government and the individual will be explored<br />
by evaluating the works of philosophers such as Plato,<br />
Aristotle, Locke, and Marx.<br />
PHIL 117 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite. Recommended preparation: Eligibility for<br />

Introduction to major topics in the philosophy of religion:<br />
the existence and nature of God, the nature and<br />
possibility of religious knowledge, the meaning of<br />
religious language, and concepts of immortality and<br />
human destiny. Special attention is given to conflicts<br />
between religion and science, competing claims for<br />
religious truth, the feminist critique of traditional religion,<br />
and the relevance of religion to social ethics.<br />
PHIL 120 ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU,UC. (No<br />
prerequisite. Recommended preparation: Eligibility for<br />

Introduction to the major movements and figures of<br />
Western Philosophy in the ancient and medieval<br />
periods: the Pre-Socratics, Socrates, The Sophists,<br />
Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas.<br />
PHIL 121 INTRODUCTION TO MODERN AND<br />
CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY<br />

Survey of major Western philosophers and movements<br />
since the Renaissance: Continental Rationalism, British<br />
Empiricism, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Utilitarianism, Nietzsche,<br />
Pragmatism, Analytic Philosophy, Existentialism,<br />
Phenomenology, and Postmodernism.<br />

PHIL 207 INTRODUCTION TO CRITICAL THINKING<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU,UC. (Prerequisite:<br />
ENGL 101.0 or ENGL H101 with a minimum grade of<br />
‘C’).<br />
Study and practice in critical thinking and advanced<br />
English composition: analysis, evaluation, and<br />
formulation of arguments; critical study of texts; and<br />
composition of critical essays. Application of critical<br />
thinking and writing skills to current moral, social, and<br />

PHOTOGRAPHY<br />
The study of photography offers a multitude of career<br />
possibilities. From fine art to commercial applications,<br />
photography is an exciting field that involves an<br />
education founded in conceptual as well as technical<br />
aspects. The development of the visual mind and a<br />
technical foundation in both traditional and digital<br />
imaging are the goals of the study of photography here<br />
at <strong>Victor</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
