NURSING ASSISTANT•OCEANOGRAPHY•PARALEGAL STUDIES<br />

PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

NURS 226 CRITICAL CARDIO RESPIRATORY<br />

NURSING<br />

Units: 2.0 - 32-36 hours lecture. CSU. (Prerequisites:<br />

NURS 222 and/or licensed as a Registered Nurse or<br />

Licensed Vocational Nurse. Grade Option)<br />

This optional nursing course provides an introduction to<br />

critical care nursing environment. Pathophysiology,<br />

diagnosis, treatment and nursing implication for patients<br />

in the critical care area will be discussed. This course<br />

will benefit primarily students going into their third<br />

semester of nursing as well as other medical personnel<br />

with medical, surgical or cardiac care background.<br />

NURS 227 PARAMEDIC TO RN BRIDGE<br />

Units: 10.0 - 80-90 hours lecture and 240-270 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisites: NURS 246 with a minimum<br />

grade of ‘C’ or better and TEAS score of 67% or greater<br />

and student must be experienced paramedic.) This<br />

course may be taken two times.<br />

This bridge course is designed to ready the paramedic<br />

nursing student to the adjustment of culture, language<br />

and practice of the profession of nursing. Roles,<br />

functions, and practice settings for the paramedic and<br />

associate degree nurse will be compared and<br />

discussed. Emphasis is on the nursing process and<br />

fundamentals of nursing, including risk management,<br />

health promotion, psycho-social aspects, electrolyte and<br />

acid-base management, and the peri-operative<br />

experience practiced in various clinical settings and the<br />

classroom laboratory.<br />

NURS 245 NURSING LEADERSHIP AND<br />

MANAGEMENT<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: NURS 223 or equivalent with a<br />

“C” or better, or permission of the Nursing Program<br />

Director). Contact Nursing Dept. Offered intermittently.<br />

Leadership and management techniques used in<br />

various health care settings, with emphasis on problem<br />

solving within the changing role of nursing as it relates<br />

to patient care and professional relationships.<br />

NURS 246 ASSESSMENT AND NURSING SKILLS<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: Acceptance into the VVC<br />

Nursing Program.) This course may be taken two times.<br />

Focuses on development of assessment skills including<br />

obtaining a health history, performing physical<br />

assessment of the adult, and evaluating physiologic<br />

changes related to aging and pediatric patient<br />

population. Emphasis on developing interviewing skills,<br />

assessing cultural factors, and utilization of basic<br />

assessment techniques.<br />

OCEANOGRAPHY COURSES<br />

OCEA 101 OCEANOGRAPHY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

An introduction to the marine environment. Methods and<br />

techniques of exploration, physics, and chemistry of the<br />

oceans; adaptation of organisms; significance of the<br />

marine environment to man. A general survey of the<br />

major aspects of oceanography; history, topography and<br />

geography, geology, chemistry, physics, meteorology,<br />

biology, and resource management.<br />

PARALEGAL STUDIES<br />

A paralegal works in a paraprofessional capacity as an<br />

assistant to an attorney in a private law firm, governmental<br />

agency industry, or private association. The<br />

paralegal performs many tasks normally handled by an<br />

attorney, such as preparing forms, writing memoranda,<br />

interviewing clients, researching legal matters,<br />

managing the law office, and a variety of other tasks.<br />

There are also self-employed paraprofessionals who<br />

work for attorneys on request.<br />

The Paralegal Studies Certificate program at <strong>Victor</strong><br />

<strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong> is designed for students pursuing<br />

paraprofessional careers in the legal field. There are two<br />

types of such paraprofessionals.<br />

Paralegal: Pursuant to California Assembly Bill 1761, a<br />

person may use the title “paralegal” only when they<br />

have obtained the required educational qualifications<br />

and they work directly under the supervision of a<br />

licensed California attorney.<br />

Legal Document Assistant: Pursuant to California<br />

Senate Bill 1418, independent non-attorneys who<br />

provide law-related services to the public for<br />

compensation must register with the county clerk as a<br />

“Legal Document Assistant,” and may not use the term<br />

“paralegal” in reference to themselves or their service.<br />

It is strongly recommended that students complete<br />

ENGL 101 and Political Science 102 before they begin<br />

taking paralegal courses so that they will have a firm<br />

foundation in writing skills and a basic understanding of<br />

the American legal system at the state and national<br />

levels of government. It is further recommended that<br />

students first complete (or at least concurrently enroll in)<br />

POLS 130, Introduction to Paralegal Studies, before<br />

continuing with other paralegal courses.<br />
