MUSC 147 BRASS CHOIR<br />

Units: 0.5 - 24-27 hours laboratory. CSU, UC<br />

(Prerequisite: Student must audition. Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course may be taken four times.<br />

This course will explore brass choir literature and<br />

performance through the baroque up to the 21st<br />

century. Specific technical skills will be addressed<br />

including breathing, phrasing, tonguing and<br />

ornamentation practices. Public performances are<br />

required.<br />

MUSC 202 ADVANCED THEORY CHROMATIC<br />

PRACTICE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite: Completion of<br />

MUSC 103-C-net; concurrent enrollment in MUSC 203)<br />

The study of chromatic harmonic practices, including all<br />

types of seventh chords, dominant seventh and leading<br />

tone seventh functions, secondary dominants and<br />

secondary leading tone chords, altered non harmonic<br />

tones, modulation to closely related keys, and borrowed<br />

chords. Continued development of basic musicianship<br />

skills, including visual and aural seventh chord<br />

recognition, rhythmic reading, melodic, contrapuntal and<br />

harmonic dictation. Emphasis on individualized<br />

programmed instruction, including the use of computers,<br />

small group and other interactive teaching aids.<br />

MUSC 204 ADVANCED THEORY CHROMATIC<br />

PRACTICE, PART II<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite: Completion of<br />

MUSC 202)<br />

Extends the concepts in MUSC 202 through use of<br />

foreign modulations, borrowed and augmented chords,<br />

neopolitan and other sixth chords, chromatic third<br />

relation harmony and ninth, eleventh and thirteenth<br />

chords. Continued development of basic musicianship<br />

skills, including visual and aural seventh chord<br />

recognition, rhythmic reading, melodic, contrapuntal and<br />

harmonic dictation.<br />

MUSC 205 SIGHT SINGING/EAR TRAINING<br />

LABORATORY, LEVEL IV<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: MUSC 203) (Pass/No Pass)<br />

Self-paced comprehensive individualized training in<br />

sight singing, developing mastery in rhythmic sight<br />

reading and playing, pitch matching and matching<br />

notation to inner hearing, and notating rhythmic and<br />

melodic dictation. Drill and practice through computer<br />

generated exercises using Music Lab software on the<br />

student’s own computer and practice and<br />

testing in the college Music Computer Lab. Additional<br />

practice in small group sessions as needed. Student will<br />

pass five quiz levels in each of eight skills on the<br />

computer to receive credit for the appropriate course<br />

section. This course is open to anyone desiring to learn<br />

basic practical music reading skills; it is required of<br />

students taking Music Theory 204.<br />

MUSC 203 SIGHT SINGING/EAR TRAINING<br />

LABORATORY, LEVEL III<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: MUSC 105) (Pass/No Pass)<br />

Self-paced, competency based, comprehensive<br />

individualized training in sight singing, developing<br />

mastery in rhythmic sight reading and playing, pitch<br />

matching and matching notation to inner hearing, and<br />

notating rhythmic and melodic dictation. Drill and<br />

practice through computer generated exercises using<br />

Music Lab software on the student’s own computer and<br />

practice and testing in the college Music Computer Lab.<br />

Additional practice in small group sessions as needed.<br />

MUSC 210 INTERMEDIATE PIANO<br />

prerequisite)<br />

This course offers the continued development of<br />

keyboard facility from including harmonization of given<br />

melodies using appropriate intermediate<br />

accompaniments, furthered exploration of piano<br />

repertoire and related skills, styles and technical<br />

exercises. Two octave major and minor scales,<br />

arpeggios, and harmonization skills will be explored.<br />

MUSC 211 INTERMEDIATE PIANO<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

This course offers the continuation and development of<br />

practical keyboard facility from accompaniments,<br />

exploration of piano repertory and related stylistic and<br />

technical exercises. The study of basic elements of<br />

music, including pitch and rhythm recognition, key<br />

signatures, intervals, time signatures, major and minor<br />

scales, and simple triads. Useful to those wishing to<br />
