MUSC 134 MUSICAL THEATRE LAB<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Demonstrated ability at an acceptable<br />

level of proficiency, as evidenced by audition. Grade<br />

option) This course may be taken four times.<br />

Preparing the vocal and instrumental music for the<br />

college’s musical productions. Participation as major<br />

leads, supporting roles, chorus or orchestra members<br />

as determined by audition. Enrollment in B, C, and D<br />

provides the opportunity for increased skill development.<br />

MUSC 135 BEGINNING BAND<br />

Units: 0.5 - 24-27 hours laboratory. CSU (Prerequisite:<br />

Student must audition. Pass/No Pass) This course may<br />

be taken four times.<br />

This course will be a study and performance of standard<br />

elementary band literature composed for the beginning<br />

and intermediate level wind and percussion literature.<br />

Proper breathing and phrasing techniques will be<br />

emphasized along with specific instrument performance<br />

technique.<br />

MUSC 136 COLLEGE SYMPHONIC BAND<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite. Student must audition. Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course may be taken four times.<br />

This course will emphasize the performance of standard<br />

college wind literature. Proper playing and performance<br />

technique will be stressed. Warm-up skills will be<br />

developed along with scale studies and rhythmic<br />

refinement. At least two public performances will be<br />

required.<br />

MUSC 139 STUDIO JAZZ BAND<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Student must audition. Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course may be taken four times.<br />

This course provides playing experience in the fields of<br />

dance, jazz, rock and popular music. Accurate<br />

execution and consistent style will be emphasized.<br />

Attention will also be given to improvisation, sight<br />

reading, ear training and performance practice skills.<br />

Public performances at the college and in the<br />

community.<br />

MUSC 140 STUDIO SINGERS<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Student must audition. Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course may be taken four times.<br />

Study and performance of commercial music styles<br />

written and arranged for choir in jazz, rock, gospel and<br />

popular styles. Development in healthy commercial<br />

vocal techniques, sight singing skills, ear training,<br />

improvisation and ensemble performance skills will be<br />

emphasized. Public performances at college and<br />

community concerts.<br />

MUSC 141 JAZZ ROCK COMBO<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Student must audition. Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course may be taken four times.<br />

A study and performance of the principles and skills<br />

needed for performing in various commercial music<br />

styles in small combos. Emphasis on ensemble skills,<br />

improvisation, ear training, music theory, stylistic<br />

interpretation and performance practices. Public<br />

performances at college and community concerts.<br />

MUSC 143 BEGINNING STRING ENSEMBLE<br />

Units: 0.5 - 24-27 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Students must audition for this ensemble.<br />

Alternative course is MUSC 137. Pass/No Pass) This<br />

course may be taken four times.<br />

This course will be a beginning study and performance<br />

of standard string orchestra literature composed for the<br />

beginning string player. Proper left hand position<br />

(excluding the use of third position), beginning bow<br />

techniques, appropriate performance practices will be<br />

emphasized.<br />

MUSC 144 PRELUDIUM STRING ENSEMBLE<br />

Units: 0.5 - 24-27 hours laboratory. CSU (Prerequisite:<br />

Student must audition for this ensemble. Alternative<br />

course is Music 137. Pass/No Pass) This course may<br />

be taken four times.<br />

This course will be an intermediate study and<br />

performance of standard string orchestra literature<br />

composed for the intermediate string player. Proper left<br />

hand position (excluding the use of third position),<br />

intermediate bow techniques, appropriate performance<br />

practices will be emphasized.<br />

MUSC 145 COLLEGE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA<br />

Units: 0.5 - 24-27 hours laboratory. CSU, UC<br />

(Prerequisite: Student must audition.) This course may<br />

be taken four times.<br />

This course will be a study and performance of standard<br />

full orchestral literature for the beginning and<br />
