PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

Fundamental techniques of proper voice production<br />

including healthy use of the voice for speaking and<br />

singing. Teaches proper relaxation and support<br />

techniques, speech intensification, vocal freedom and<br />

resonance, and emotional support for the singing and<br />

speaking process. Designed to meet the needs of those<br />

who use their voices for solo and/or ensemble singing or<br />

in such vocally intense activities as teaching, group<br />

leading, sales, coaching, or for those taking courses in<br />

speech communication and acting.<br />

MUSC 123 INTERMEDIATE VOICE CLASS<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: MUSC 122 or equivalent skills, i.e. formal<br />

basic instruction in fear control, proper body relaxation,<br />

breath support, vocal focus and some experience in<br />

solo vocal performance.) This course may be taken four<br />

times.<br />

Application of the vocalization techniques of Music 41 to<br />

the study of vocal performance. Attention to diction, tone<br />

color, song styles and interpretation. Some basic<br />

instruction in Italian, French or German diction.<br />

Intensive solo performance in a wide range of musical<br />

styles. Useful to anyone desiring to continue the<br />

development of the singing voice and performance<br />

potential. Repetition of the class provides opportunity for<br />

increased skills development.<br />

MUSC 124 BEGINNING GUITAR<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC. (No<br />

Prerequisite.)<br />

This course offers the study and performance of music<br />

for the beginning guitarist. It gives the student with no<br />

knowledge of guitar performance the opportunity to<br />

learn basic reading skills through simple guitar pieces.<br />

Some public performance will be required.<br />

MUSC 125 BEGINNING GUITAR<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

This course offers further study and performance of<br />

music for the beginning guitarist. It gives the student<br />

with minimal knowledge of guitar performance the<br />

opportunity to learn basic reading skills through simple<br />

guitar pieces. Some public performance will be required.<br />

MUSC 126 GUITAR ENSEMBLE<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Student must audition.) This course may<br />

be taken four times.<br />

This course offers the study and performance of music<br />

for guitar ensemble. It gives the student with basic<br />

knowledge of guitar performance skill the opportunity to<br />

perform in an ensemble setting. Some public<br />

MUSC 130 WOMEN’S CHOIR<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, (UC credit<br />

pending) (No prerequisite. Pass/No Pass) This course<br />

may be taken four times.<br />

A treble choir of female voices to perform repertoire<br />

from all styles and periods of music written or arranged<br />

for treble choir. Emphasis on the development of the<br />

total choral musicianship skills of each singer within the<br />

group context. Choir will perform at various college and<br />

community functions.<br />

MUSC 131 THE COLLEGE SINGERS<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite: Solo audition.<br />

Applicant should possess strong basic choral/vocal<br />

skills and experience in choral singing i.e. ability to sing<br />

on pitch with a well-supported, clear choral tone; strong<br />

ear able to retain and accurately recall parts learned;<br />

basic sight reading skills; team player willing to take<br />

direction. Number of singers accepted in any section<br />

may be limited by the requirements of part balance and<br />

the repertoire planned for that semester.) (Grade option)<br />

This course may be taken four times.<br />

A select chamber choral ensemble of mixed voices to<br />

perform at various college and community functions.<br />

Repertoire includes significant choral music from all<br />

periods of music history, including motets and<br />

madrigals, part songs, masses and cantatas with<br />

orchestra, 20th century choral songs, and spirituals,<br />

vocal jazz and Broadway arrangements. Music is most<br />

often performed in the original languages. Emphasis on<br />

development of the total choral musicianship skills of<br />

each singer. Group may tour out of state or to Europe.<br />

MUSC 132 MASTER ARTS CHORALE<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Solo audition to determine ability to match<br />

pitch, sing in tune, carry a harmony part, level of music<br />

reading. Prior choral experience in a high school,<br />

college/university, community or church choir desirable.)<br />

(Pass/No Pass) This course may be taken four times.<br />

A large choral ensemble dedicated to the performance<br />

of major choral works from all musical periods, often<br />

with orchestra. Group may tour from time to time in the<br />
