HIST 130 LATIN AMERICAN HISTORY<br />

prerequisite)<br />
This course is designed to give students a chronological<br />
overview of Latin American History beginning with pre-<br />
Colombian societies and concluding with Latin American<br />
Independence. Focuses on the impact of the conquest<br />
of the “New World”, the role of the Catholic Church,<br />
Spanish mercantilism, and the economienda system, on<br />
the indigenous population and the development of Latin<br />
American society.<br />
HIST 131 LATIN AMERICAN HISTORY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. HIST 130<br />
(No prerequisite)<br />
This course is designed to give students a chronological<br />
overview of Latin American History beginning with Latin<br />
American Independence and concluding with present<br />
events and problems in Latin America. Students will<br />
gain an understanding of the social, economic, political,<br />
and diplomatic elements that have been the basis for<br />
post-Independence Latin American development.<br />
Special emphasis will be placed on US-Latin American<br />
relations.<br />
HIST 145 PTK STUDY TOPIC SEMINAR<br />
Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite. Pass/No Pass)<br />
This is a lecture series based on the Phi Theta Kappa<br />
International honor society study topic for each year.<br />
Faculty members will be invited to speak on their areas<br />
of expertise as they relate to those study topics.<br />
HIST 153 AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite)<br />
The progression of the Black American’s slave<br />
experience to the present. Emphasis on the struggle for<br />
social, political, and economic parity.<br />
HIST 155 WOMEN IN U.S. HISTORY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite)<br />
History of women in the United States from early<br />
colonial era to the present. This course must assume<br />
some understanding of the formative events in U.S.<br />
history and will focus on the changing roles women<br />
have played in society, family, and work.<br />
HIST 157 NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />
prerequisite. Recommended preparation: HIST 117,<br />
HIST 118, and ENGL 101.0)<br />
This is an overview of Native cultures from Mexico to<br />
the Arctic, and a history of Native peoples since<br />
European contact. It deals with native societies, the<br />
Indian Wars, and contemporary issues. This course<br />
begins with an overview of methodological issues and<br />
proceeds through ethnographic information on the major<br />
regions of the North American supercontinent to a<br />
discussion of the era of European contact and<br />
contemporary issues.<br />
HONORS<br />
The honors program offers enriching experiences to<br />
improve the quality of education for academically<br />
talented students who are striving for advanced<br />
academic achievement. Honors courses are more<br />
extensive and intensive in terms of research, depth of<br />
discussion and material covered. They are designed to<br />
promote a deeper, more comprehensive understanding<br />
of the material and the connectedness of disciplines<br />
while preparing students to excel later in advanced<br />
degree preparation. They offer additional opportunities<br />
for independent and focused study, and more<br />
individualized interdisciplinary, experimental, enhanced<br />
and collaborative learning experiences. Students<br />
participate in advanced seminars and intensive research<br />
and course work. Students should be self-motivated<br />
and must have demonstrated superior academic<br />
achievement in either high school or college.<br />
<strong>Victor</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a member of the Honors<br />
Transfer Council of California. This membership can<br />
provide students with numerous scholarship and<br />
financial aid opportunities, as well as possible transfer<br />
advantages to participating universities, such as UCLA,<br />
UCR, UCI, Whitman <strong>College</strong> and many others.<br />

HONORS COURSES<br />
BIOL H100 HONORS GENERAL BIOLOGY<br />
Units: 4.0 - 48-54 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />
laboratory. CSU (No prerequisite)<br />
This is an introductory course for honors students<br />
emphasizing the scientific method, analysis of scientific<br />
data, the use of scientific units, cellular biology, genetics<br />
and heredity, classification and systematics, evolution,<br />
ecology, environmental issues, and current topics in<br />
biology. The laboratory complements the lecture topics<br />
via direct experimentation, simulations, and video,<br />
including a survey of Earth’s biological diversity.<br />
