GUID 55 BUILDING MATH CONFIDENCE<br />

Units: 1.5 - 24-27 hours lecture. (No prerequisite Grade<br />

Option.)<br />

A group guidance program designed for those who fear<br />

math and/or are unable to deal with math successfully.<br />

Emphasis will be on how one approaches math by<br />

examining attitudes and dispelling faulty notions which<br />

erode confidence in one’s ability to do math.<br />

GUID 56 SELF ESTEEM<br />

Units: 1.5 - 24-27 hours lecture. (No prerequisite Grade<br />

Option.)<br />

This personal development course focuses on specific<br />

ideas and techniques to overcome negative feelings<br />

such as loneliness, guilt, depression, and inferiority.<br />

Students will develop a personal value system that<br />

leads to greater happiness and productivity.<br />

GUID 59 SPECIAL ISSUES IN PERSONAL<br />

DEVELOPMENT<br />

Units: 1.0 - 2.0 - (No prerequisite. Pass/No Pass)<br />

A series of short-term offerings developed in response<br />

to the common interest of special groups. Opportunities<br />

for an examination of the elements associated with<br />

particular issues of personal development and for group<br />

interaction on various topics of student concern.<br />

GUID 64 ORIENTATION (EOPS)<br />

Units: 0.5 - 8-9 hours lecture. (No prerequisite. Pass/No<br />

Pass)<br />

This class is designed to orient EOPS students to the<br />

college’s functions, programs, services, procedures,<br />

campus facilities, transfer and career information.<br />

Additionally, it will acquaint students with performance<br />

expectations.<br />

GUID 66 PEER ADVISING TECHNIQUES<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (No prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course is designed to provide program advising<br />

skills, catalog, registration and scheduling information<br />

as well as helping skills that will prepare peer advisors<br />

to assist other students.<br />

GUID 75 CAREER PLANNING FOR THE DISABLED<br />

Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. (No prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass.)<br />

This course is designed to offer students with<br />

disabilities a practical orientation in career selection and<br />

development of skills in job placement.<br />

GUID 100 CAREER AND LIFE PLANNING<br />

Units: 2.0 - 32-36 hours lecture. CSU. (No prerequisite.<br />

Grade Option.)<br />

This group guidance course is designed to assist<br />

students in the career and life planning process through<br />

consideration of individual needs, personality, interests,<br />

abilities and values. Emphasis will be placed on<br />

personal growth through assessment, career research,<br />

goal setting, and decision making.<br />

GUID 101 FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite. Grade Option.)<br />

This comprehensive course integrates personal growth,<br />

academic and career success with problem solving,<br />

critical and creative thinking. The course focuses on the<br />

following topics: life management, goal setting, career<br />

decision making, educational planning, college<br />

requirements and expectations, instructor-student<br />

interaction, cultural diversity, health maintenance, stress<br />

management, campus resources, learning styles, and<br />

strategies including lecture note-taking, test taking, and<br />

concentration.<br />

GUID 105 PERSONAL AND CAREER SUCCESS<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite. Grade Option)<br />

This intensive course is designed to assist students in<br />

obtaining the skills and knowledge necessary to identify<br />

and reach their personal goals and achieve college and<br />

career success. Topics covered include: selfawareness,<br />

goal-setting, motivation and discipline,<br />

memory development, time management, oral and<br />

written communication skills, study skills, diversity,<br />

financial planning, and an orientation to college life. See<br />

GUID 107 LEARNING STRATEGIES AND STUDY<br />

SKILLS<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. (No prerequisite)<br />

This survey course assists students in assessing<br />

attitude, motivation, learning styles, and personality<br />

attributes that are necessary to the successful transition<br />

into college. Students will integrate this self-awareness<br />

with theories and strategies that focus on the attainment<br />

of life long success in academic, professional and<br />

personal development. Topics include time<br />

management, study skills, test preparation, educational<br />

goal setting and planning, maintaining a healthy life<br />

style, and critical thinking skills.<br />
