PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

This National Fire Academy course is designed to<br />

provide the fire fighter student with the information and<br />

concepts to provide a successful public fire safety<br />

education program within their community.<br />

fighter by being able to predict the overall reaction of a<br />

FIRE TECHNOLOGY<br />

FIRE 33 FIRE LINE EMERGENCY MEDICAL<br />

TECHNICIAN (EMT) ACADEMY<br />

Units: 1.0 - 12 hours lecture and 12 hours laboratory.<br />

This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.<br />

(Prerequisites: Current EMT certification and<br />

employment in public or private fire service organization.<br />

State mandated. Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course is designed to prepare the fire fighter EMT<br />

to safely operate at a major wildland fire incident at the<br />

fire line location. Topics discussed include duties and<br />

responsibilities of the fire line EMT, equipment needs,<br />

helicopter safety, incident command system<br />

organization, and review of treatment for common fire<br />

line injuries and use of makeshift aids.<br />

FIRE 40 FIRE FIGHTER ENTRANCE EXAMINATION<br />

TECHNIQUES<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite. Grade<br />

Option)<br />

This course is designed to prepare the student to take<br />

and successfully pass the entrance level fire fighter<br />

examination process. Topics discussed include: seeking<br />

employment opportunities, the application process, the<br />

various examinations given to applicants, oral interviews,<br />

and other aspects of the examination process.<br />

FIRE 40A FIRE FIGHTER PHYSICAL AGILITY<br />

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION TECHNIQUES<br />

Units: 1.0 - 48-54 hours laboratory. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course is designed to prepare the student to take<br />

and successfully pass the entrance level fire fighter<br />

physical agility examination through physical<br />

conditioning and specificity training. Emphasis on<br />

physical conditioning and exercise.<br />

FIRE 40F BUILDNG CONSTRUCTION FOR FIRE<br />

SUPPRESSION FORCES/WOOD/ORDINARY<br />

Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course provides the fire fighter student with the<br />

principles of wood and ordinary construction as they<br />

apply to the fire service. The primary emphasis is on<br />

improving the fire fighters ability to ensure fire safety on<br />

the fire ground by recognizing common causes and<br />

indicators of building failure, collapse and other hazards<br />

FIRE 50 FIRE SERVICE SUPERVISION-INCREASING<br />

PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS<br />

Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. (No Prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This National Fire Academy course is designed to<br />

increase the fire fighter student’s effectiveness as a<br />

manager and a leader by presenting current research<br />

on management, leadership, stress, and time<br />

management and explaining how to adapt this<br />

information to their own specific management context.<br />

Accredited by State Fire Marshal’s Office.<br />

FIRE 51 FIRE SERVICE SUPERVISION-INCREASING<br />

TEAM EFFECTIVENESS<br />

Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. (No Prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This National Fire Academy approved course is<br />

designed to increase the student’s effectiveness as<br />

team leaders and members of the fire service by<br />

demonstrating how communication, motivation,<br />

counseling, and the principles of conflict resolution and<br />

group dynamics can be used to promote efficient group<br />

functioning and members satisfaction. Accredited by<br />

State Fire Marshal’s Office.<br />

FIRE 52 COMMANDING THE INITIAL RESPONSE<br />

Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. (No Prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This National Fire Academy course is designed to give<br />

the fire fighter student information and skills necessary<br />

to establish command, perform size-up, develop and<br />

implement an action plan, transfer command, and<br />

organize an incident using an effective command<br />

system. Accredited by State Fire Marshal’s Office.<br />

FIRE 53 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS FIRST<br />

RESPONDER OPERATIONAL DECONTAMINATION<br />

Units: 0.5 - 8-9 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: FIRE 82A.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course provides the student with the information<br />

and skills to safely and competently decontaminate<br />

people and equipment at a hazardous materials (haz<br />

mat) incident. California Specialized Training Institute<br />

(CSTI) certified. Meets federal and state requirements<br />

as listed in 29 CFR 1910.120 (q), CCR 5192 (q),<br />

NFPA472. $10.00 fee for CSTI certificate.<br />
