This course is the first in a series of two classes for nonnative<br />

speakers of English wanting to improve their<br />

pronunciation skills in English. Students will learn to<br />

effectively improve pronunciation for clear and effective<br />

communication in social, academic, or job settings.<br />

Through structured activities, direct instruction, and lab<br />

work, students will be able to improve their skills in<br />

those areas that comprise pronunciation, rhythm<br />

patterns, and stress.<br />

ESL 43 LOW ADVANCED READING AND<br />

VOCABULARY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (No prerequisite.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This is the first of two courses designed for non-native<br />

speakers of English who are approaching advanced<br />

level of proficiency in reading English. Emphasis is on<br />

further developing reading and vocabulary skills.<br />

Students are introduced to a variety of reading genres,<br />

word structure, vocabulary, and reading strategies. This<br />

course will not apply to the Associate Degree.<br />

ESL 43B HIGH ADVANCED READING AND<br />

VOCABULARY<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite. Grade<br />

Option)<br />

This course is designed for non-native speakers of<br />

English. Skills include developing essays form longer<br />

reading passages. Students will respond to reading<br />

passages, reinforce vocabulary building and<br />

comprehension.<br />

ESL 45 PUBLIC SPEAKING FOR ESL<br />

Units: 3.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite. Grade<br />

Option)<br />

This class is for non-native speakers of English at the<br />

advanced level of listening and speaking who wish to<br />

develop practical public speaking skills. The class is<br />

designed to help build confidence in speaking. Students<br />

will learn to use visual and audio aids to enhance<br />

presentation skills and to listen critically and objectively.<br />

Students will recite, develop, present, and evaluate<br />

speeches for a variety of situations.<br />

ESL 45A CROSS CULTURAL COMMUINICATION<br />

SKILLS<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite. Grade<br />

Option)<br />

This course is designed for non-native speakers of<br />

English who wish to understand cultural differences of<br />

North American society. Course focus is on broadening<br />

PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

intercultural understanding for students living and<br />

working in the USA. Topics focus on different aspects of<br />

mainstream North American cultures encountered in a<br />

work or social setting.<br />

ESL 46A LOW ADVANCED ACADEMIC<br />

VOCABULARY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture.(Pass/No Pass)<br />

Designed for non-native speakers of English who are at<br />

the advanced level of ESL. Course covers academic<br />

vocabulary skills needed in professional and academic<br />

settings. Course covers the principles and techniques of<br />

learning vocabulary using context clues, word parts, a<br />

dictionary, and word families. This course will not apply<br />

to Associate Degree.<br />

ESL 47 ADVANCED GRAMMAR<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite. Grade<br />

Option)<br />

Students at advanced level learn and apply rules of<br />

English grammar and structure for use in oral and<br />

written communication. This course provides review<br />

practice and expanded study of verb tenses, gerunds<br />

and infinitives, modals, and tag questions.<br />

ESL 48 HIGH ADVANCED GRAMMAR<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. This course will not<br />

apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite. Grade<br />

Option)<br />

Students at high advanced level learn and apply rules of<br />

English grammar and structure for use in oral and<br />

written communication. This course provides review<br />

practice and expanded study of phrasal verbs and<br />

introduces passive forms, conditional statements,<br />

adjective clauses, and indirect speech.<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES<br />

A number of disciplines on campus offer classes and<br />

vocational certificates focusing on different aspects of<br />

Environmental Studies. See listings under the following<br />

departments: Agriculture and Natural Resources,<br />

Biology, Chemistry, Construction Technology, Computer<br />

Integrated Design and Graphics, Electronics, Fire<br />

Technology, Geography, and Political Science.<br />

Promoting an understanding of the interaction of human<br />

beings with their environment is the focus of<br />

Environmental Studies. Career opportunities cover a<br />

wide range of positions in public agencies, business,<br />

industry and nonprofit organizations which need<br />

individuals who can provide up-to-date environmental<br />

information and assist in compliance with environmental<br />
