ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)<br />
ENGL 247 SHAKESPEARE<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC.<br />
(Prerequisite: ENGL 101.0 or ENGL H101 with a grade<br />
of ‘C’ or better)<br />
An introduction to Shakespeare’s work through a study<br />
of his principal plays and sonnets.<br />
ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />
LANGUAGE (ESL)<br />
English as a Second Language (ESL) is the study of<br />
English designed for non-native speakers of English.<br />
As California becomes culturally and linguistically more<br />
diverse, the need for language and cultural orientation<br />
grows. Moreover, non-native speakers of English will<br />
need to develop academic language skills necessary for<br />
success at the college level. It is the goal of the ESL<br />
program to meet that need.<br />
Career Opportunities<br />
Although ESL is not recognized as a separate major, it<br />
is a necessary component for success in any field for<br />
the non-native student.<br />

INGLÉS COMO SEGUNDO IDIOMA (ESL)<br />
ESL es el estudio de Inglés Como Segundo Idioma. El<br />
programa está diseñado para las personas en que el<br />
primer idioma no es inglés. California es un estado que<br />
es muy diverso en cultura e idiomas, donde la<br />
necesidad de aprender inglés es importantísimo para<br />
sobrevivir en la vida cotidiana estadounidense. Además<br />
el estudiante de ESL tiene que desarrollar destrezas en<br />
inglés para tener éxito en el colegio y la universidad. El<br />
programa de ESL tiene el fin asistirles en alcanzar sus<br />
metas personales y educativas.<br />
ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />
LANGUAGE (ESL) COURSES<br />
VVC offers a wide variety of noncredit ESL classes at<br />
lower levels, from low beginning to advanced level.<br />
Please consult the Class Schedule for a description of<br />
these classes, along with times and locations.<br />
ESL 3 LOW BEGINNING READING AND WRITING<br />
Units: 4.0 - 48-54 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />
laboratory hours. This course will not apply to the<br />
Associate Degree. (No prerequisite. Pass/No Pass)<br />
Students at this level demonstrate little or no<br />
competence in communicating through writing and little<br />
or no control of vocabulary, grammar and sentence<br />
structure. Course is designed to teach students basic<br />
alphabet and phonics, and to read and write simple<br />
stories. Students will copy text and/or generate words or<br />
simple phrases; develop awareness of appropriate word<br />
choice or correct form; write simple sentences in<br />
thematic units.<br />
ESL 5 BEGINNING LISTENING AND SPEAKING<br />
Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />
laboratory. This course will not apply to the Associate<br />
Degree. (No prerequisite. Pass/No Pass)<br />
This course is designed for the non-native speaker of<br />
English who has no ability or very little competence in<br />
speaking and listening. Emphasis is on developing<br />
students’ ability to listen and understand basic English.<br />
Nonverbal social customs are taught; nonverbal<br />
behavior and cross-cultural communication are taught<br />
implicitly through modeling, interaction and<br />
demonstration.<br />
ESL 12A BASIC COMPUTER LITERACY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. This course will not<br />
apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite.<br />
Pass/No Pass)<br />
This is a three part course in ESL Computer Literary for<br />
non-native speakers of English. The focus of the course<br />
is to develop language skills related to computer usage.<br />
Students will learn computer uses for ESL courses and<br />
educational purposes.<br />
ESL 12B BASIC COMPUTER LITERACY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. This course will not<br />
apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite.<br />
Recommended preparation: Completion of ESL 12A is<br />
strongly recommended. Pass/No Pass)<br />
This course is designed for non-native speakers of<br />
English. The focus of the course is to expand and<br />
develop basic computer knowledge using the most<br />
current Microsoft OS for ESL educational purposes.<br />
ESL 13 HIGH BEGINNING READING AND<br />
VOCABULARY<br />
Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. This course will not<br />
apply to the Associate Degree. (No prerequisite.<br />
Pass/No Pass)<br />
This course is designed for the non-native speakers of<br />
English with some competence in reading and<br />
vocabulary. The course focuses on reading abilities<br />
through the enhancement of vocabulary skills and<br />
cultural awareness. Emphasis is placed on developing a<br />
life-long ability to read for pleasure. American culture is<br />
