ENGLISH<br />

ENGL H102 HONORS COMPOSITION AND<br />

LITERATURE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (UC credit<br />

limitation) (Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 101.0 or<br />

ENGL H101 with a grade of ‘C’ or better.)<br />

Further training in writing and introduction to the short<br />

story, novel, poetry, and drama. This course takes the<br />

methods of English 102 and promotes more<br />

comprehensive analysis, research, discussion and<br />

writing assignments.<br />

ENGL 104 CRITICAL THINKING AND COMPOSITION<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: ENGL 101.0 or ENGL H101 with a grade<br />

of ‘C’ or better or eligibility as determined by VVC<br />

assessment.)<br />

This course is designed to develop the student’s critical<br />

thinking, reading and writing skills beyond the level<br />

achieved in English 101.0. It will focus primarily on the<br />

analysis and evaluation of expository and argumentative<br />

discourse and on writing analytical and argumentative<br />

essays.<br />

ENGL H104 HONORS CRITICAL THINKING AND<br />

COMPOSITION<br />

assessment.)<br />

This course is designed to develop the student’s critical<br />

Recommendation preparation: ENGL 101.0 or H101.<br />

Grade Option)<br />

Principles of creative expression. Topics may cover<br />

fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and/or drama.<br />

ENGL 112 TECHNICAL WRITING<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. (Prerequisite:<br />

ENGL 101 or ENGL H101 with a grade of ‘C’ or better)<br />

Principles of effective writing in a variety of formats to<br />

suit specific technical audiences. Clarity and accuracy in<br />

written communication situations are stressed. Topics<br />

include formal and informal reports, special business<br />

letters, instructions, and proposals. Designed to<br />

simulate the technical writer’s job.<br />

ENGL 116 AUTHORS OF THE THEATRE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

A survey of playwrights from the Greeks to the present.<br />

The selected plays are read, discussed, and analyzed. It<br />

is both AA and BA applicable. See cross listing for TA<br />

A college reading course emphasizing interpretive,<br />

analytical, and evaluative abilities required for academic<br />

reading; college vocabulary, research, and study skills.<br />

ENGL 162 NATIVE AMERICAN LITERATURE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite; ENGL 102.0 is recommended.)<br />

An introduction to Native American literature from the<br />

oral tradition to contemporary writing. Study of myths<br />

and legends, traditional oral narratives and songs,<br />

transitional forms such as oration and autobiography,<br />

and written genres (poem, short story, novel).<br />

ENGL 210 FICTION WRITING<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. (Prerequisite:<br />

ENGL 109. Grade Option.)<br />

Principles of writing advanced fiction, focusing on the<br />

short story and the novel.<br />

ENGL 211 POETRY WRITING<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. (Prerequisite:<br />
