PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

This lab in the Writing Center is recommended for<br />

students taking any writing-intensive course at VVC.<br />

Emphasis is on the one-to-one tutorial approach,<br />

computer-assisted instruction, and word composing/<br />

processing.<br />

ENGL 50 WRITING FUNDAMENTALS<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: ENGL 6<br />

or eligibility as determined by VVC assessment.)<br />

A practical writing course emphasizing expository<br />

writing, including planning, organizing, composing short<br />

essays, reading a variety of college preparatory texts,<br />

and editing for punctuation, diction, usage and sentence<br />

structure.<br />

ENGL 50L LABORATORY-ENHANCED STUDY FOR<br />

ENGLISH 50<br />

Units: 1.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: ENGL 6<br />

or eligibility as determined by VVC assessment.)<br />

A Laboratory enhanced study concurrent with English<br />

50 for students participating in the Student Support<br />

Services program. A practical course supplementing the<br />

process and function of expository writing, including a<br />

review of spelling, punctuation, diction, usage, and<br />

sentence structure.<br />

ENGL 59 EFFECTIVE READING AND STUDY SKILLS<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture.<br />

This course is designed for students reading just below<br />

college level and preparing to take transfer level<br />

courses. Assignments focus on comprehension,<br />

analysis and evaluation of textbooks and other college<br />

level reading materials. Emphasis is placed on reading<br />

skills including study methods, vocabulary development<br />

and critical thinking. The strategies apply to a wide<br />

range of fields including drama, history , natural science<br />

and psychology.<br />

ENGL 61 TUTORING WRITING<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: ENGL<br />

101.0 or ENGL H101 with a grade of ‘C’ or better) This<br />

course may be taken four times.<br />

This course will expose students to the theoretical<br />

concepts and practical issues involved in tutoring<br />

various levels of writing. Students will develop an<br />

understanding of the issues and practices relevant to<br />

the role of tutoring writing through observing, reading,<br />

and discussing the relationship between the writer,<br />

his/her writing, the tutor, the classroom teacher, and the<br />

classroom environment.<br />

ENGL 62 WRITING TUTOR WORKSHOP<br />

Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: ENGL<br />

101 or ENGL H101 with a grade of ‘C’ or better.<br />

Pass/No Pass)<br />

This is an interactive course that analyzes the<br />

techniques of tutoring writing. Students will examine the<br />

role of writing tutors in one-on-one conferences, discuss<br />

tutoring theory, and observe tutors in the Writing Center<br />

and/or composition instructors in the classroom. Though<br />

this class is meant to prepare students to tutor writing,<br />

any student wishing to improve his/her writing skills will<br />

benefit from this course.<br />

ENGL 65 COLLEGE GRAMMAR<br />

Units: 2.0 - 32-36 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: ENGL 6.<br />

Grade Option)<br />

This course provides intensive college-level work on<br />

grammar, punctuation, and sentence mechanics.<br />

ENGL 101.0 ENGLISH COMPOSITION AND<br />

READING<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU, UC (Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of ENGL 50 with a grade of ‘C’ or better or<br />

eligibility as determined by VVC assessment.)<br />

This course is designed to develop skills in analytical<br />

reading and expository writing. It will place particular<br />

emphasis on the research process, including the<br />

principles and methods of research and composing the<br />

research paper.<br />

ENGL H101 HONORS ENGLISH COMPOSITION AND<br />

READING<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of ENGL 50 with a grade of ‘C’ or better.)<br />

This course emphasizes the basic approaches to writing<br />

that will be necessary in college: research, textual<br />

analysis, critical applications and discussion of texts and<br />

ideas. The class demands greater depth of research<br />

and discussion, and emphasizes the seminar approach<br />

to learning.<br />

ENGL 102.0 COMPOSITION AND LITERATURE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 101.0 or ENGL<br />

H101 with a grade of ‘C’ or better.)<br />

An introduction to the genres of literature including<br />

short story, poetry, drama, and novel. Further training in<br />

writing, especially about literature.<br />
